Jumping through whoops...

It seems whoops have become easier to jump through in recent years and are now becoming mini rhythm sections. Less blitzing and more jumping. Have the track builders changed the whoop design? Are they making whoops smaller/easier to prevent injuries? Does the removal of lime from the dirt cause the whoops to break down quicker and allow for jumping?

Not long ago Musquin was at a disadvantage because he could not blitz whoops.....fast forward to 2019 and he's stoked now being able to triple through the whoop sections. He was hauling ass last night BTW...great ride.

I know guys have always jumped through whoops, but it was never the fastest way through, and you were not likely to win unless you could blitz. It used to separate the top riders from the rest of the field. Seems like it's now all about being the fastest whoop jumper, and not the fastest whoop blitzer. I guess they are all racing the same track, so if the track builders are doing this for safety to keep more riders on the track then I'm all for it.

Have whoop sections got a lot shorter overall as well?

Maybe its me looking back through rose tinted glasses, but I could have sworn that even just going back a few years you would have a whole lane of whoops where it really separated those who could blitz and those who couldn't.

All I know is I think we've had one proper good set of skimming whoops this year. Now there's no separation in them as they get beat down and there's one defined groove that everyone takes to jump through making whoops one lined. I miss proper whoop sections from years past. Long and hard so can skim all night. #RIP whoops.

There hasn't been a hardcore set of whoops n years.... They always end up knocking them down....

And someday somebody needs to make a drinking game out of RC saying "jumping through the whoops".... last night he had to have said it 20 times....

RC is probably amazed that the hoops are so much smaller that the 2fiddy class has everyone getting through them fast and consistently.
We used to hold our collective breath when a Rider had to blitz to stay in it

What would it take to repair the whoops mid-race? Is it not doable from an equipment/time standpoint? They seem to groom everything else...

Time. To do it properly can take an hour to re prep. And they constantly get smaller until you just end up rebuilding them.

When I prepped our Supercross track in a mini track loader, it would be an hour to do lips, landings, and berms, and another hour to do the whoops.

So what did they used to do just 5-10 years ago? Put concrete mix in the dirt to keep them from breaking down or what? Or, are the whoops just that much smaller now?

Jumping through the whoops has become the worst part of SX to me. Bring back long, real whoops sections.

Are you implying that Eli couldn't get by in the whoops because he was scared Cooper was cross jumping in front of him? I could see that being a possiblity..

We are seeing tonight jumping in the whoops might be faster....shouldn't be that way.

So after tonight, we learned they changed the design of the whoops which allows them to be jumped now. Are we ever going to see whoops that can’t be jumped again, like old times?

Not sure we'll ever see proper whoops again....but I'm glad to see we got confirmation of the whoop design change straight from Tomac's mouth. Tomac says they should be tighter so guys can't jump through them, and called the new whoop design "the new age way"...so it seems you are correct, proper whoops are now "old times" and jump through whoops are the "new age way"....bummer.
