Since the AMA can't add 2 years to a pro's career, they just reduced that rider's career by 2 years. If the averge pro has a career of 10 years, that's a 20% loss. So a rider's career will now span 18-28 instead of 16-26.

Good move by the AMA. 18 is the right age to enter pro racing. Now they just need to let 2T 250's race in the MX2 class.

Any chance the AMA will also work something to limit the money spent on Ams coming up? That's the only way to get jr back in school.

I already said what I thought about raising the age. Now if they could do something about all the professional amatuers that are makine huge money traveling to am nat'ls with factory equipment. Reducing the money spent on ams MIGHT deter some from dropping out and concentrating solely on mx.

Then again, if that happened. We'd all be whining about how the racers are slow and can't compete on a national or world level because we deprived them of all the benefits of racing am.

Keep the kids in school....just in case the big time doesn't work out.

Keep the kids out of rentals.........well....we all know why.

This really hurts individuals that have the talent to compete at the Pro level. Granted, there aren't many, but there should be room for exceptions.

Your right about the school part. The exception part I am not so sure. Look at the NBA, a number of can't miss prospects are now flipping burgers.

True, but with a kid like James or RV or RC what is the point in making them wait an extra two years when they are faster than most of the Pros before they ever run a Pro race. That kid isn't going to enroll in public school or go to college, they are just going to keep racing.

How old do you have to be to race Pro in Europe (GP's)?

Lap times should be what dictates when you turn pro. Hell a kid can work a full time job at 16 in the U.S.A. . This rule is BS.

Great, now everyone's gonna bitch about the 17-18 year olds racing (sandbagging is what some of you fucks will call it) the "A" classes at Loretta's.

Why not just make it 18, or 16 with a high school diploma and certain SAT score?

This just means mom and dad will have to take out a 3rd, 4th, 5th, etc mortgage before they can cash in on there golden ticket.
Or maybe they could start the kids at a later age to offset future costs, I swear some of you guys are so one-minded only see things from one side and refuse to look outside that realm of comfort. this is a great thing for the sport and it should have a huge impact on riders maturity levels etc. It is a great idea and long overdue

Do you really think that parents are going to wait longer to get their kids started.............not very likely.

I agree with the rule but I really dont think you're going to see Jr back in the classrooms because of it. He's still going to be traveling across the country to race in the am nats set up in his class A rig and 20' garage on wheels. It's just that mommy and daddy might decide not to take out that 3rd mortgage to do it for 2 more years.

If JS or RV or RC had waited 2 more years, they still would have the speed and maybe just a little more maturity to handle the stress.
One step at a time. This is a step toward keeping kids in school a bit more....or at the very least a quality homeschool situation.

Most homeschool situations are home riding school with a bit of book learning thrown in.....sometimes.

Danya and Tony managed to do it on the road with great success (Danya is brilliant) but that is very rare.

It removes some of the desire to rush kids into the pro ranks. .... i hope.

If there are lots of kids running LL in the A class who have pro speed it won't be sandbagging........

Sandbagging is killin everyone from 2nd place back not having 3 or 4 really fast guys up front.

I could think of a way but it involves the word monopoly and I wouldn't want to start anything like asking rational questions that you guys are missing.....

Like anything in politics, start with the basics-

Who benefits?
Who doesn't?
Who decides?
Is it possible that a "private gateway" to the pro ranks is next?

Socrateef-just asking questions....

For 99.9% of the wannabe Pro mxer's there is no golden ticket!!!!!!!

Taking a mortgage out to further a kids so called motocross career is fucking retarded. Parents that do stupid shit like that deserve to lose it all.

This is a great move for all. Jr might be able to get a REAL High School Diploma and this new rule might also help mini mom and mini dad see the light before its to late now.

Well it looks like the top 16 and 17 year old kids will be moving to Europe to race pro. That ought to be really good for the AMA series and for their schooling. Get ready Euros, the good guys are all on their way over. Excellent move AMA.

If a certain SAT score was required to race there would be nobody racing at the Pro Level.

18 yrs old to turn pro is a great move for the future of the sport.

If you have any doubts about what good this will do for the sport in the long run go watch a Joey Lagano interview and a Ryan Dungey interview back to back and see for yourself.

Wow, Dungey waited until he was 18? Did not know that.

I think it will benefit the 450 class more than anything. Now the riders will be more developed, stronger, and more experienced when moving up. Maybe it will give some riders more confidence moving up and they may experience less burnout from not meeting their expectations because they moved up when they were not ready.

Didnt I see on the Canadian nationals TV show a couple years ago where a 15 year old was racing the Can Nats?

I could see a bunch of the riders jumping the border into Canada to get some pro experience.

They are already forcing riders out of B class and now this is going to make it a lot tougher for getting support in the A class as this will put a 2 year talent Dam for riders moving to pro.

No what they are doing is self regulating prior to the gov't stepping in. They are already fighting due to the lead law and now due to the attn that racing is recieving, they are showing that they are trying to protect the younger riders.

One side benefit would be more A class riders at local races. The way it is now, a local race with more than 10 A class riders is a rarity.

A good compromise would be to grant a limited pro license that allows a rider to try to qualify for one national a year at 16, and if he qualifies, he can race that national. But only one per year until he's 18.

It works fine for basketball, football, etc. We aren't talking about them scoring on a college level, but if we are really worried about them getting an education then they at least need to test on a high school level. There are quite a few kids coming up now that only have a middle school education.

If you can't prove you're on a high school level, you wait til you're 18. Simple as that.
