How would today's top riders do on an older model bike?

How do you guys think today's top riders would do on an older bike model against the current field? Are new bikes that much better?

For example, say you put marvin on a 2010 ktm, Barcia on the 2010 yami, roczen on the 2010 Honda, etc. In this example, let's say they have had the same amount of time to train and prepare for supercross on this older bike model and all of the current competition is on up to date, 2019 stuff.

Maybe 2010 isnt old enough. What about 05 models? Or what is the oldest year bike model that could still be competitive with a top pro on it??

Idk just food for thought. A friend and I were talking about it and I thought I'd see what you guys think.

Well to me a 2010 isn't an older bike, yes it's a few years old but not much different. Go at least as early as 2005 if not 2000.

On other words bring back 2 strokes and test a riders real pro skills. Not just twist it and rip it.

I agree. I have a 2010 and I dont see it as an old bike. I only used the year 2010 because on Vital, I sometimes see people referring to 2010s as older bikes.

Its bizarre to me that, at least in my district, a 2010 can be raced in the vintage class since the rule is any bike that is 8 years or older

How would today's top riders do on an older model bike, older bike is 69 to 76. The Question is Barcia, Roczen, Marvin could they even race the riders of that time i dont think so

The top riders would still be the top riders. Guys like RC, Reed, Stewart, et al. were the cream of the crop whether they were on two strokes or four strokes.

Probably the same as what I see at our local races with local pros, who have made mains in recent years but lack funds to continue the dream and work for a living now. One in particular shows up from time to time with his friends basically bone stock 2010 rmz450 with an exhaust and suspension. Races A class and laps the field every time.

You'd have to put the guy on a significantly slower bike to make a huge difference. Losing a tenth here or there because the bike has slightly different power and geometry would swiftly become irrelevant as the rider adapts. Put a guy on a '90s 250 2 stroke or even a 1st-gen 400F and then you'd probably see a difference.

A heavier, carbureted 4-stroke would be a disadvantage in SX, less so outdoors.

There's no hard line, but generally between 1995-2000 the bikes all reached a modern spec - suspension components and frame geometry wise.

bikes from about 2000 and on have made bike improvements but its minimal compared to the previous decades. RC's 04 CRF 450 made about 66 hp and weighted in around the (then) ama limit of 216 dry.

i've recently ridden an 06 yz250f back to back of a 17 kx250f. The biggest drawback is the carb isnt as crisp off the bottom and from the factory, the 250's are coming with more power.but the chassis and suspension are still really good and my 06 was the most reliable bike i could want

really it comes down to the rider. i've seen guys jump from one bike to another completely different bike and go just as fast

Bikes have came a long ways but I don't think riding has progressed really that much. If 2005-2007 RC and JS7 time traveled with their bikes to last summer they would have won motos all summer long.

I still believe their battle at washougal 2006 is the fastest anyone has ever gone there.

Anything more than a few years old is what I consider an older bike. Maybe because I’ve never had bikes more than a few years old.

I remember hearing chad say the 10 or 11 Honda he had was the best bike he had ever ridden still until this day.
I often wondered how he would do on it if he was riding it again

Sorry for providing my opinion. I don’t see how riding newer dirt bikes make somebody cool but thanks buddy. Once my bike has around 75 hours, I replace it. Guess that makes me cool for wanting to ride a safe, new, bike. The guys who buy a new bike or two every year must be really cool. If you knew what kind of sacrifices I make to ride a newer bike, you probably wouldn't be such an ass. Pound sand.

I think the top riders would do just fine on an "older bike". I think the average Vitard would do just fine on an older bike too.

Jerry Robin took his 80’s Cr through the Regionals. Good riders get the job done in spite of equipment, until we go too far back in model history.

In 1975, a top 5 racer would lap the field on a 1985 bike.

In 2009, a top 5 racer on a 2019 bike would be pretty close to the same.

We are reaching the end of the development cycle for internal combustion moto bikes.
