I asked each rider in the test what it would’ve taken to move the Suzuki up (the one start rated it sixth), they all said further days of testing in stock trim wouldn’t have helped its rating. And I personally full agree from my own standpoint.

Michael, I've noticed that for the last several years, the majority of test riders are all featherweight girly boys. How about a wider variety of weights, maybe a couple more old farts. Many new bike purchasers are over 40, as they are the ones with the disposable income. I know you are testing the bikes the way they come, but skinny guys all complained about the Suzi being too stiff. Did you re spring the Suzi and then play with the set up? I think that would make for a more through test. You played with mapping, couplers, so why not test them properly sprung? Your big boy had to ride all the others with soft springs?
Cuz the couplers are free, springs are not, couplers are changed in about 12 seconds springs are not. The bikes would be down for an hour every hour changing springs for each rider.

Girly boys?...To weigh 180lbs, my body fat percentage would have to be like 30%...

For the 450 test, I use a couple heavier riders but 250s are built with a 150lb average weight in mind and it's mostly kids on them so I test with that in mind. I had one heavier rider unavailable for this test and Kusti dropped like 8 pounds from last year so he was much closer to our lighter group.

As for spring rates, our bikes are tested as they're purchased off the showroom floor and with what's available with the bike with how it's purchased. Stuff likes tires and spring rates are up to an OEM to hit right/with the best average in mind and if they don't nail that, then it's their problem per se.

Michael,
Thanks for the awesome shootout. Quick question.
If someone were to add a vortex ignition/edu and Yoshimura system to the Honda, would it move up in the rankings and possibly contend for the win?
It sounds like the chassis and suspension is a home run and I don't mind dropping a little money to bump the bottom of the motor up.
Also, is the honda clutch pull as stiff as in years past? In previous years, it was noticeably stiffer than most the other bikes.

The $200 GET WIFICOM2 is pretty good option for Honda, because you can easily manipulate both ignition & fuel maps via phone or tablet.

Just Curious what your opinions would be on this?
If a total beginner was gonna Buy a 2019 250f planning to race 250C/Beginner Motocross, Do you think there finishing position would be better on one bike vs another ?
Example, if they Bought a 2019 Suzuki RMZ250 and finished 12 place out of 20 people ,
Would that 12th place spot be different on a Yamaha or another bike?
Or the same?
In your opinion of course.

In my experience - unless there is something you just truly hate - you finish the same.

4 hp is a lot of difference now days - but in a drag race its very little.

Thats kinda the answer i was expecting.
Heres another question
If the same type rider C class beginner was to race a 2019 250f and finish 12th out of 20 people
How old of a 250f Assuming its in good condition, could he go back to. before it would make a difference in what position he would finish
Like what year bike , would you assume he would get the exact same finish on a 2013?
2010?
2008?
2004?
Again asking specifically about 250f

An 08 yz250f to me would get me the same lap time as a 2019. I loved that 08 and rode it really well.

I had a 2011 kxf250, recently got a 2014 (kxf250), i can tell you that it's easier to ride, i'm not so done when i get out of the track after a manche. Well, talking about laptimes i gained from 1 to 3 seconds, depends on track. Definitely a considerable difference, but i think my race results would be pretty much the same. My bad i won't be able to compare the old bike results with the new bike results since i moved on another class with faster guys.

Thanks for your answer do you think its because the bike got better, or is just because it was fresh that your laptime would be faster ?

ML - If you had to take one of these 6 back to 1978 and line it up and race in a national against the top riders of the era which one would you bring back with you and why?

Thanks.

I had hoped you’d say that as I’m convinced the YZ250F is the best mx bike ever produced.

It’s user friendly, powerful, tune able, bristling with tech, well built, reliable, handles and turns, great fit and finish, good looking and fairly priced.

Great overall package for all skill levels.

Wouldn't just adding either a Bigger rear sprocket or smaller front , help the Honda on bottom?
Reading and listening to every shoot out so far
Everyone has really good things to say about it and only
The one thing bad which is low bottom end power.

The gearing would just change how quickly each gear passes, right now we’re already shifting it more than basically any other bike (the Kawi and Honda are close in that regards for me). I tried gearing it up more last year and while it helped the gap between second and third feel closer and carry third a lil better in faster corners, it also blew through each gear much quicker. Realistically, their transmission ratios need some improving from the factory...I know the Geico team runs one that has a much taller second and shorter third.

I have a 2019 YZ250F, Is it important to have the wider 450 rim with a 110 or is the difference in handling not noticeable to the average rider?
I’m wondering if a 110 mounted on the stock rim would affect the tire profile and height, causing more tire flex/roll when leaned over and accelerating plus a little taller gearing.
I’m probably overthinking this....

ML you mentioned running a 110/80 instead of 110/90 on a 250F....I don't see any for sale, only a 120/80 for the 450s. I have mounted a 110/90 MX33 on my 2019 YZ250F and with the stock 1.85 rim it's right at .1" taller over the Bridgestone 100/90. This seems like a big difference gearing and profile wise, what do you think?

The 90 isn’t represented of an exact or continuous number. The 90 measurement means 90% of the width. So if the tires is wider, such as a 110 over a 100, then the height will be wider as well. In this case the height is 90% of the 110 width. Also, it seems as each tire manufacturer measures slightly different to each other, because the width of a 110 tire across multiple brands is not quite the same.

Because bike got better. Obviously training is important but the bike you ride can make the difference. You're not gonna become a champion because of a great bike. Unless you have a unusual talent you're not gonna win if you don't feel good/have a decent bike between your legs.

That’s such an open ended question...like how much budget, bolt ons versus services, available parts versus race team goodies...

Thats just not really possible. You really think hes got all the answers to how each bike responds to every single mod ever?

For me...

Kawasaki: Needs standard function forks, get rid of SFF spring, and revolve/respring rear. Go to lower bars, 110 rear tire, and quite a bit of engine work. Needs a lot more top end and a smidge more down low. So I’m going to say ignition, exhaust, and some sort of combo between a head, cams, piston or whatever that respected engine builder would recommend. The Kawi is good on low end performance and response, gear ratios are good, just needs to more spread power. Chassis is alright, comfortable but not a lot of front grip.

Suzuki: respiring and revolve more than anything. Needs a lot more top end, gear ratio from second to third is too spread...new engine mounts and probably triple clamps. The bike feels so rigid from a chassis standpoint. Probably could be assisted by a link arm or all new linkage as well. Engine...really needs a ECU, it has poor stock mapping for me. Then a load of work from whatever that engine provider recommends. 110 rear tire.

KTM: Spring forks, work on the rear shock a bit, re-gearing (add one or two teeth in the rear, stock gearing is too spread out) and remap would go a long ways. Maybe find a softer front triple clamp or bar/bar mount combo to get ride of the rigid feel up front.

Husky: same as KTM, more work towards getting it to rev quicker though, probably airbox mod. Also, needs a more comfortable seat/seat cover.

Honda: Tweak suspensions settings slightly, needs a clutch, needs a generous amount of engine work and ECU...I’d want more roll on, it needs to be able to roll through the RPM range when the conditions are soft. Feels unresponsive down low or in the mid range. Second to third gear is way too spread as well from a ratio standpoint. Could lose a lil weight...chassis is spot on. 110 rear tire.

Yamaha: Tweak suspension settings slightly, change bars/bar mounts to even out rider triangle a bit. Look for more top end power. Get rid of the Battlecross tires...

Michael,
Thanks for the awesome shootout.

We went from a 2018 YZ 250F to a 2019. He rode it for the first time today. All we have done is set the sag. He weighs 190lbs and 6'3. He said the 2019 felt like it had more grunt down low, and could not believe how good the suspension felt right away. And he busted out some pretty good size triples on it.

I’ve ridden one with exhaust and ECU, while it was helpful it didn’t change the power characteristic enough. It more or less just added to where it already had power. From what I’ve seen, I’d say head work is needed to get the air speed up at low RPMs for the exhaust ports. Maybe Harris could shine some more light on this if he’s still reading the topic.

If you had to choose a bike to be your race bike or if you were looking for a good platform to make it pro what would you choose. Thanks
