Did all the old farts hate Hannah, Lechien and Johnson on the circuit as much as the old farts here hate J-Law?

No matter who you are, one generation always hated the next generations music.

I'd say it works the same in MX and many other categories.

I would bet huge money that those guys have stories that would make J-Law look like an Altarboy.

They were actually the pioneers, well Hannah was more or less. The old farts were more Desert , TT, Flat trackers or RR. The AMA Grand National Champion was the top dog in my eyes in the mid to late 60s. MX guys came over from Europe and they raced together and pretty much anihilated (sp) them in MX. The slowest Euro even beat them.

The National guys I think were in awe of the younger guys like Smith, Hannah that were raised on MX. I think there were some guys, and I won't name names, that were resentful that were the first MX stars from our fine country.

I don't remember who said it...Either Weinert or Lackey...but in the early days they thought they were supposed to hit all the BUMPS until they saw the Euro's skip across, jump or avoid them....LOL. To me Lackey was the 1st True MX star from the good ole USA

I was in the dark in those days. No access to MX.

I'm sure everyone looks at the next generation as "young punks"...but, JLaw isn't a Hannah at this point. The "young punks" of yesterday earned respect over their attitude because they gave a sh1t about the sport. We aren't talking about the almost was guys with attitudes. The closest I can relate to is when Bradshaw showed up talking a storm and pissing off folks. Attitude for days. But, still a racer. Heck, maybe JLaw is the second coming of Damon. Don't know. There are a lot of similarities.

JLaw is my new Hero.

And I like ALL riders, I can't to this day understand those that do not like and respect all of the riders on the SX and National race circuit.

i remember an incedent in 81, i want to say the san deigo sx, when hannah was trying to get around rick johnson, and had a bit of a time doing it. when he finally got by, he gave RJ the bird.

i'm sure that was just a generational thing.

OW38B makes a good point, in the old days, there was no internet, and you didnt have all this hate and fans taking sides in a public forum.

you didnt have all the rumers, half truths, the "i saw something at the races" deals.

there were so many fast guys and front runners, one had many favorites. the only fan bashing i remember was a result from the media stirring it up, for example, the "let broc bye" incedent, i think all the magazines barbequed glover on that deal.

I don' think that in the old days of motocross - there were OLD guys.

In the '70's, everybody was still young

It was still a relatively young sport.

I guess it still is, for that matter.

I suppose evidence offered would be look how big the 30+ and 40+ classes are

now.

I remember in tthe 80's you'd see one or two guys in 40+.

And you'd hear that stupid Flock Of Seagulls song.

When I was young, I didn't and still don't hate any riders.

I wanted to grow up to be Bad Brad Lackey, and today I'm a J-Law fan.

Maybe it's because they both had long hair and I'm going bald.

Old guy's should get rid of the hate, it's not good for the heart.

RJ did... he beat Hannah's ass out on the track as time wore on, moto by moto, race by race. But they both respected each other in the pits. Both great riders, as were a lot riders at the time period.

Great time to be a fan and a rider during that time period, or any period in American MX history

Yep, thats true and also i think its more about personality than age or gereration. If someone is a dick head or just a plain ass, he or she is not appreciated by those that are generally good folks, young or old.

Thank heaven for JLaw and the anti-socials in any sport, it makes for good fun and good banter as long as it doesn't get mean spirited, its great!

I've never hated any rider, well maybe Victor Popenko (Russian hit-man), but that's a whole other story that was conveyed awhile back. Too bad the Search feature here suks.

As far as Hannah goes I didn't care for him back in the day as I was a die-hard Suzy rider and Roger, Grossi, Laporte, Barnett, Jennings etc were riders I pulled for.

Hannah did some stuff that had me shaking my head though. What he did to Kent Howerton at Saddleback was so over the top and dirty it was unbelievable at that race and his comments afterward were too. "Howerton's bike was so superior to mine, it weighed 20 lbs less and here he was jacking with me so I T-boned him to knock him off his bike I tried to break his freaken leg!"

Can you imagine if J-Law said something like that?

I actually filmed the takedown on a Super8mm camera, but can't find the footage, it was surreal to see it over and over. It happened in the corner after the Magoo double jump. As Kent was being taken down he tried to reach out to grab Bob off his bike, but missed and instead his arm got torn up from Hannah’s rear sprocket.

After he got his arm patched up, Kent went out and absolutely dominated the second moto. To this day Hannah still hates Howerton for reasons I don’t clearly understand it’s just the way he is. Over the years though what the Hurricane did for this sport has grown on me and I have learned to respect his “Take-no-Prisoner’s” approach, and not caring wtf the public or the press think about him.

In that respect that is what I like about J-Law as well.

Think about that for a second, at the time, Hannah was a three time SX Champion, three time National Champion and Yamaha's number one factory Star.

At the time RJ was a local kid out of San Diego, riding a Yamaha, want to ask the question again?

Yeah and the special ingredients to the Honda Hills Track prep were wood chips and manure. I hate to think of how much of that stuff I breathed in but it made for good berms. lol

Chicken and Bradshaw had more take outs per race, than these guys do all year now.

Hannah flipped off the whole stadium at the LA Coliseum(I think) Or maybe it was the rosebowl.

I don't care who he was or what he was. To flip someone the bird after you passed them is just arrogrant and disrespectful.

If I were RJ I would have pounded his cocky little ass.

In the early Hannah domination days, it seemed like he flipped off anyone that challenged him. I saw Monte McCoy run him ragged for several laps at a Winter-Am race in '78, and when Hannah went by him ,he slowed, turned around and flipped the digit.
I think Hannah also liked Keith Bowen almost as much as he liked Howerton.
