Well alpinestars makes boots specifically for their big riders. I’m pretty sure Eli Tomac doesn’t wear boots you could buy at Motorsport, so same concept. Yeah no brain injury the helmet did it’s job but his face did explode. i have an old F2 carbon and love it. I get that it could have happened with any helmet and the right circumstances. I think we have some of the best helmets this day in age.

Alpinestars makes one-off colorways for their top riders but the boot they are wearing is fundamentally the exact same boot you can buy in a store. They are not making one-off boot patterns, sizes and shapes that deviate from their standard mass-produced patterns.

Helmet manufacturers would never make a one-off helmet that is somehow more protective than the very same helmet you can buy in a store. Do you have any idea what sort of damage that would do to a helmet's brand if consumers found out pros get an extra special helmet that is more protective than one you can buy in a store? Doesn't and wouldn't happen.

Weston didn't die and didn't suffer a traumatic brain injury. That's the best any helmet can do under those circumstances.
Alpinestars and Fox both have boot programs for their pros that have quite a few changes in some cases. And yes, they even do custom 1/2 sizes for some riders.

Gearne makes custom sizes for their riders as well. Martin brothers got small feet... Cool

ML was I thinking right on that video? I think it was barcia at the Astars facility having his foot cast. It’s been along time since I’ve seen it and can’t seem to find it now.

They did a casting of his foot for a custom bootie they make him. It's a lace up that's got a carbon fiber base if I remember right.

If you think they don’t make one off gear for big name riders it’s because they don’t want you to know. Gear company’s definitely do.

David Bailey, Ernesto Fonseca, Doug Henry, Jessy Nelson... all paralyzed. Crashing is a part of mx from a twisted ankle to paralyzation. Severe injuries have always happened. This notion is ridiculous. From Bailey in the 80s to Jessy Nelson a couple years ago this is a dangerous sport.

Eric Sorby visited Weston Friday at the hospital and was very relieved after watching him be 100% alert, he can't talk yet but definitely understands/answers/exchanges using his hands, he's sitting down on his bed too.

His face has considerably swollen down as well and he's looking a lot more like the Weston we know.
He has no other injuries (no broken femur or anything, as original rumors stated) and is expected to have a full functional recovery fairly soon, the aesthetic side will take longer.

There is another surgery planned soon, maybe this week-end, and the medical process, although necessarily slow, seems to follow its path as planned by the doctors.

From the film, it looked like Peick was face down when the bike landed on his head, so his helmet surely saved his life. Not to be dismissive, but this could've been a LOT worse. It could've caused serious head or spinal damage.
How dare you be an optimist!

Thank you for the update.

Glad to hear Weston is on the path to getting better.

That’s good news, I was talking to my dad and he told me sorby was one of the first to see him and realize his condition after the crash. One can only imagine how freightning that was to see as my dad told me about the conversation him and sorby had after, I will say it sounds brutal and we are all sending multiple prayers a day for his earliest recovery and a full recovery! Sorby was our coach at Mcr in 2009 when me n Weston raced, great guy who I’m sure is doing his part to help in this situation. Hopefully loudawg will keep us posted with positive news.

Weston is going to need all the support from the sport, we can all agree Weston’s put everything of himself into this sport to go from struggling privateer to a factory guy working really hard. Respect a man while he’s down and send in a prayer that we see him in 2019 racing or atleast at the races where we know he’d rather be!

And you’re completely wrong Macbeth. Bitd the original bell helmets made in the USA produced very special and specific helmets for their elite riders. Before it became common I had a “factory” carbon fiber one. I don’t know about today but wouldn’t surprise me if there are some goodies not found on the shelfWink

Great to hear that Weston is alert and that surgeries are going as planned. I've been checking his status before my morning coffee, my coffee won't be as bitter today.

Good news is great to hear. Now can we get this thread back on track and stop the petty sniping? Pulling for a speedier than originally anticipated recovery for Weston.

If they were "one-offs", then they weren't building a whole bunch for testing by DOT, Snell, etc.

So you're certain that Bell, and Stewart, were in gross violation of the AMA rule book by using non-approved and certified equipment?

Yeah, I think that may have been caught by the rule nerds pretty easily.......

Now if you're saying that he had helmets before they were available to the general public, but AFTER regulatory testing, that makes a bit more sense.

"Back in the day..."

No helmet manufacturers are making one-off helmets that are somehow more protective, durable, special than the ones you and I can buy in a store. They might be making special, fitted liners or colorways, but the core helmet is exactly the same.

Carbon fiber is actually very brittle and not particularly great at impact resistance, but it's lighter. One could argue that those "elite" racers back in the day wearing a one-off carbon fiber helmet were assuming some risk.

Anyway, back to the topic at hand... Weston survived a pretty horrible crash and his helmet did it's job.

Regarding such a condition, it's way more comforting to get real news such as Xavier's than ones you've already read twice - or very interesting insight about one off boots and helmets...
Just my two cents.

You may have read it twice before, the OP may not have. We live in a world where our experiences are very different, and even though we are posting on the same message board there’s no reason to think that we’ve all read the same posts. I’m not sure why his post wouldn’t be considered “real news”, it looked to be from his family via his team manager, so I doubt it wasn’t “real”. If you’re hung up on the 7hr thing, I’d just get over it.

Good to hear he’s doing better and should make a full recovery and I can’t wait to see him back out there if he chooses too. If there is any rider who seems they can pull through a tough recover it’s Weston. I don’t know the guy personally but this last year at Oakland SX I took my 4 year old daughter to a dealer signing to meet him because he is her moms favorite rider (go figure) and he was the coolest most accommodating guy out of all the lineup. My daughter was shy and nervous to meet him and he got up and out of the autograph line to give her a hug and take a picture with her and spend a few minutes talking with her to make it special. He wasn’t a big ol cool tough guy he was super cool and a total class act. We can’t wait to see him line again he is the true peoples champ! Below is the pic of him and my kid.
