I had every pipe you could buy for this bike and went out and tested every possible combination. 8 oz flywheel, DEP pipe and Pro Circuit silencer was the best if you want a smooth controllable power. One of the mags did a test on all the pipes and liked the DEP the best too. I’m sure you could find the test if you googled it.
That was dirt rider back in 2003, same motor so it still applies.
I had a dep pipe and dep standard length silencer on my 2010 yz250 and a 9oz stealhy fly wheel weight. Smooth all the way through with a long pull and good top end. My new yz came with a gytr by hgs pipe and shorty silencer. With no fww this pipe picks up much sooner than the dep but doesn't pull as far up top. It's still smooth but much more pull off the bottom and through the mid.
I had the stock pipe and shortened stock muffler on my 2010, it added snap on the bottom and went flat up top. On tracks that were hard packed or slippery it was harder to control than the other set ups i have run.
Going to do some playing around with combo's but I'm thinking a hgs and standard length silencer will be pretty hard to beat

I remember DV12 running an FMF pipe with PC silencer. I think he said it was the best combo.

Maybe Vuillemin can chime in?

That’s interesting. Never knew about that.

Yeah. I always thought it was an interesting combo. It's not everyday you see someone running 2 different brands of exhaust on their bike let alone someone on a factory team.

What this guy said. Over the years, with a few different late-model YZ250s, I have tested literally every pipe made for the YZ. The DEP pipe with PC Long Silencer (304?) is the best overall combo for great bottom end and good top end overrev. The HGS is very good as well, with slightly less overrev. The ONLY time I liked a shorty silencer, was with the stock pipe. That combo is actually very good. The Doma pipe/silencer is really good, but is like a unicorn here in the states now.

Regarding the R304 and 304, is the exhaust opening smaller on the R304? It seems it is but never really looked in person and I don't have the 304 (long silencer)

Vuillemen mentioned on a PulpMX Classic Commentary that he liked the FMF pipe best, as there was a very good throttle to wheel connection. 50% throttle resulted in 50% of the power. He also said the bike would do something even at low throttle settings, and did not require rev like the PC pipe.

I haven't tried an aftermarket pipe, but have no issues with how my bike runs with the stock exhaust. It can lug low and rev pretty high. At WFO I am not longing for any more power, even in the sand and uphill at Club MX.

The only thing I want is a little more hit on bottom. Other than that, I have no issues with the power. The damn bike is amazing!

If you can spend the money try a Rad Valve with a Power Wing and leave the reed spacer on the intake. When I put mine on I was amazed at the grunt. I removed the torque spacer because I didn't like so much bottom.

If I still lived at the apartments off the San Fernando Road exit up the hill from Starbucks I'd let you take mine for a spin.

I'm not sure if you can tell in the video, but the bike is set up for a lot of grunt, which helped on the jumps with little run on the approach: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HY-bgn1MNTA&t=248s

Just started escrow on a house today, so no buying parts for a while Laughing I have a set of VForce reeds though.
Oh man, you were right over the hill from me!

Everybody likes something different.. For a pure bottom end bike I would say the FMF fatty with a shorty silencer but if you ever go to Glen Helen or ride in the desert you won't have enough top end and your friends will all ride away from you......lol I prefer a mid to top power band on the YZ the DEP pipe with a stock silencer from an 07 I think it is (a little longer than the newer ones) had the perfect power delivery for me. I also like the FMF Fatty with the same stock silencer. We run a Vforce 4 without the spacer I double up the base gaskets on the cylinder and cut the head to maintain stock compression. I don't like the stock exhaust with any silencer feels underpowered to me. You still in Santa Clarita or did you buy out of town?

Ordering the FMF Powercore 2 to test out. Tom Morgan said it will work best (with 315cc big bore/stroker) so will try to do comparison with R304 silencer and DEP pipe.

I've seen a few people mention they like DEP and 304 long the best. Has anyone also tried DEP and FMF long, that has also tried PC 304 long?

Originally my plan was to buy an fmf factory fatty and shorty because that’s what we’ve always run on our smokers, but unfortunately I can’t spend any money on parts right now lol. I have a parts bike that came with the pc r304 and a pc works pipe. Little nervous to use the works pipe though since I know they are more of a mid-top pipe.

Unfortunately couldn’t afford to stay in Santa Clarita, but we are buying in Lake Hughes

You might have to make room in your budget or use it as an excuse to validate your purchase lol.

Lol I actually have a friend that works for fmf and helps me out quite a bit, but the wife would kill me if I spent money on my bike that I never get to ride vs saving the money for home inspections and all of that Laughing

I put a 9oz fww. PC pipe and silencer. Vforce reed valve. Main jet to 180 and mine is a fire breather. Love it. Jets perfectly from sea level to 4K ft. Very impressed.

I think the flywheel weight makes a huge difference. 3rd and 4th gear much more usable now

That's even better. He can bring the pipe/silencer to his place and when you go out riding you can install it at the track. Come back home with a new pipe/silencer installed and dirty. She won't even know the difference.

Better than a package showing up at your place and having her saying "Hunny, did you order more parts?" Umm, no. Must be a mistake. Oh, wait a minute. Yeah I ordered them months ago but they were on backorder.

But I get it. Better to wait than be sorry. Life priorities > rest of the stuff.

I'll be dynoing a new yz tomorrow with fmf fatty with short and v force reeds. I did the head but cyl is stock. Gonna dyno with and without reed spacer, I'll report back tomorrow

Blue line is with the reed s
spacer, red line without. As you can see it makes more hp everywhere with the spacer in with 1.5hp more peak and 1lb torque more

Thanks for posting.

I find removing the spacer preferable with the stock exhaust and RAD Valve. With the spacer I find the power to be too jumpy at low RMPs, which I find uncomfortable and unpleasant.

Perhaps with the FMF system (which I heard has less bottom than stock) I would prefer to use the spacer.

That said, I'm not planning to spend the money on an exhaust now, as I'm pleased with the performance as is. If I did spring for a system, I may go with the DRD as it was featured in a Dennis Stapleton project YZ250.

I'm more of a short-shifter, but don't want an overabundance of grunt at the bottom. If I wanted that I would get a 450.

I've tried fmf and PC on the dyno with the PC having slightly more peak power and top end. I've heard the department is the one for the yz but haven't tested one yet. Maybe Derek Harris has. I know hes done boat loads of yz testing. I do know with a PC or fmf you pick up some peak power over a stock pipe and I prefer the rad valve, at least on the dyno. Dont notice much with the v force

Do you happen to know how the PC and FMF compare to the stock pipe from bottom to mid?

I had direct comparisons between the three but dont have the data any more. I have a graph showing the fmf comapared to stock and it appears stronger everywhere over stock. Changing just the muffler to a shorty loses peak hp and top while gaming bottom and mid. Once I put the fatty pipe on it kept the low mid gains while boosting top power over stock. I got 1 hp from the rad valve. The setup I have on this current bike is v force, fmf fatty, shorty muffler, cut head and stock cyl and it's over 47hp after jetting. With a rad valve and better gas I can almost hit 50

I just put my PC shorty on yesterday and rode it up and down the street. Noticed a difference on bottom which was nice! I have VForce reeds to throw on and I'm running the stock pipe for now. I wanted some more bottom to mid so this should be right where I want to be. Also running C12 at 40:1

Thanks for posting the results.

You said you prefer the RAD valve. Where does it make better power? Do you run the spacer with the RAD valve?
