This may have already beeen discussed on here before?Im not sure, may have missed it. Anyway, whats withh Bubba wearing the $140 Bell, when there's a $400 model? the saying goes,"If you have a hundred dollar head, wear a hundred dollar helmet, if you got a 500 dollar head buy a 500 dollar helmet". So whats the deal with this $140 dollar jammy? Is it good? Protective? Lightweight? Looking to buy a new lid, hoping for a lil info.

That is surprising he would wear that helmet.
Are we sure he is not wearing some kind of custom top of the line Bell ?

Crashed at Monster Mountain a couple weeks ago and once yesterday. Time for a new lid.

By the way how is Monster Mountain, my boys are off for Spring Break in a week and thinking of going there. I have heard it good.
MXA: Can you tell us a little about James' helmet?
Sean: It's a production Bell Moto 8, but he's using some prototype Moto 9 cheek pads that we're still developing. We've been testing the foam that we use on our Bell Star road helmet and the biggest difference is that it has a stiffer density. We probably won't see a Moto 9 until 2010. Chris Wood from Airtrix did the paint with a really cool chrome base layer. Right now we're also working on a James Stewart signature line of helmets. We have about ten different artists - from sub-cult to mainstream - that are working on various styles and James will choose the one he likes.
Monster Mountain an awesome track. We rode there for the first three days of our trip, then hit some other tracks in GA and FL, and ended up coming back to Monster to finish our trip. Watered and groomed every day, natural terrain, pretty safe, and very fast. Excellent dirt, etc. I'll go back every year.
hjc makes a lot of brands, as does kbc.
shoei and arai are the only way to go.
a shitty helmet is a shitty helmet though, whether it costs $150 or $450.

I still wont spend $400+ on a lid. My reasoning behind it is this. A helmet is good for one shot. after that, it has done its job and needs to land in the trash. I dont know how all your bank accounts are looking, but I know I couldnt afford $400 every time I took a knock to the head (even though I only took 2 at most) so I buy mid line, snell rated helmets that I can replace for $200-$250. That way I am not trying to extend the life of a damaged helmet because I couldnt afford a new one.
Most helmets are produced in China or Indonesia (even the KBC which are just developed in Korea) and the Chinese do a great work as long as the ordering brand controls QC and manufacturing properly.
A friend of mine wrecked a few weeks ago and messed his helmet up pretty bad. He cant afford a new one and after my dad found out he was still using it, he gave him his to wear..same brand and same size. The next day he knocked him self out and shattered my dads helmet...Subdural hemmorage, but he is ok and will be riding again in six weeks. I cant help to think if he was still wearing his helmet what the out come would have been.
I had the shoei VFX-Preston and loved it, no hard hits on it but it is now over a year old. I just bought the 09 shoei and love it, its very comfortable with the leatt.
"Although James Stewart has been wearing Bell Helmets low end motocross helmet for comfort reasons, that doesn't mean it should look low end. The new lid has some very cool paint details."
Ive been racing for over 20yrs and when i was 5yrs old till about 12 or 13 I always wore a bell. Started wearing thor helmets when they came out and have been ever since. The new thor's look shitty and i dont have a deal with them anymore..So the 140 dollar bell is looking good to me. Plus your not out too much when you take your first face plant and need a new one!

No matter if it's cars, stereo equipment, or helmets, the top-of-the-line model costs a lot more than the next model down even though the performance is often very comparable. To push that last bit of technology, typically you pass the point of diminishing returns from a value-based perspective. Think of the cost difference between a Ti bolt and a steel bolt. When you demand every last drop of performance from your equipment, cost has to be of no object. But when you want to strike a balance between cost and performance, typically the second in line product offers the best value.
