Surprised nobody has mentioned Steve Wise yet.

He won in MX, SX and roadracing on Superbikes. He also was on the podium for AMA flat track. Won 2 ABC "Superbikers" events too!

Saw him running the SX Mini series the other night at Milestone. I was like "oh that's where ya went". Pretty cool he's doing that though. Looked to have a pretty good turnout with some talented kids.

And Peak Honda was absolutely a game changer, but it wasn't in the premier class, and it was as much Honda outsourcing the 125 team to Peak as it was an outside team. Where McGrath's Chaparral team competed with the factory Yamaha team, and was the first private team to win a premier class championship.

McGrath always stayed way lower over jumps than everyone else. He would hit them at a higher speed and soak up the jump with his legs to get less height so the wheels could get back on the ground sooner. It was part of his technique that was a hold over from his BMX days. It was one of the things that made him faster lap after lap and he would set up passes over jumps doing it. It was cool to watch !

neither ricky Carmichael nor bob hannah set the bar for fitness, and bob Hannah probably couldn't bench 120 lbs. jeff ward was one of the "fittest" riders of his era and roger decoster was one of the fittest in his, but many were dedicated and worked out a lot. rick johnson and brad lackey are 2 others. mark Barnett was extremely fit as well, however, marty tripes proved that if you have superior skill, you can be overweight and eat cheeseburgers or burritos etc every day and still spank everyone on sunday.

I did some of the testing on this exact bike when I worked for kawi in the r & d department . it pinged like an arcade game but was stupidly fast and would nearly yank ones arms out of their sockets if they got too far back from the bars.

2 Things. Please correct me if I am wrong, but this is how I thought of these.

-Harley Davidson. Not an expert, but my dad had one and if I recall correctly it wasn't very American. It was Italian. At least the motor was.

-Yamaha developing the modern 4stroke? KTM(Lance Smail) had one before that. It was Henry though, that proved it was competitive and could win.

Pierre Kars maker for leading the Americans in(to a new Era by being a rabbit.

Brad lackey for chasing his dream up a steep, rocky goat path.

Kent howerton for revolutionary new uses of a clutch.

Magoo for showing that physics didn't seem to apply to mx bikes sometimes.

Hannah for all the things already mentioned plus showing that exotic machinery wasn't alway needed. Add riding with two fingers on the levers also.

Laurens offner of team LOP and the guy that formed team tamm were the leaders in private race teams. Marty moates won the usgp on a lop bike and Alan king won a national on team tamm.

Travis Pastrana, Brian Deegan, Cary hart and several others for being pioneers in branding and selling skills and personalities related to moto.
