Why would a factory team do their peg pins like this?

Only thing i can think of is they fear the cotter pin will get pulled out by dirt(cant imagine how) OR the mechanic had a brain fart.

I'm interested in why, as you cas see above the Bullets mechanic has them how we would all have them to mitigate the risk of the split pin breaking and pin peg falling out

Maybe AC’s mechanic thinks there’s more chance of the split pin being damaged if it’s underneath?

I’ve always put the split pin at the bottom. Never had one fail.

The Bullet doesn't care for/need/want super sharp pegs.

when was the last time anyone had a failure with one of these pins?

Simple...! Cause it's bloody easier then bending underneath to do the cotter pin.

Man I wouldnt want to rely on the cotter pin to hold the pin from dropping out. Espicially how gnarly and fast these guys are.

Watched a video a couple months ago about an Endurocross setup and in the video they talked about pins on top because they had ripped them out on rocks when on the bottom. Cant remember who it was but that was their reasoning. Maybe the same?? Not sure. Also had chain master link facing inward for that reason. Found that interesting

Yes. And the pin worked its way up and cocked in the mount.

Its a stupid setup from the start. Having threads on the lower peg tab with a long shoulder pin/bolt would be low profile as it gets.

LOL...Well kept secret till now, thank you Pit Bits! It's simple rotational dynamics, this split pin location allows better traction however only when the vehicle is stationary.

Id be doing it now tho, oddly ive found it difficult to get that size split pin, alway in a kit and i end up with lots of big and small ones, no just rights..Wink

The Euro tracks some times have a bunch of rocks and the split pins tend to get mashed up and every now and then one or part of one falls or get pulled out. The euro mechanics like to keep the split pin up top where they can keep an eye on it and it's safe up there from rocks. I noticed it on my first trip to MX Des Nations in 1990. All the Factory Yamaha guys did it that way.

I do the same, stops the split-pin getting destroyed & more visible if it does get damaged. Also, on the enduro models with side stand you have to run it that way or the side stand will chop through the split pin.
