Having generators running all day also defeats the argument that altas will open up "tracks in the suburbs" because of a lack of noise.
Can't see how a track almost exclusively catering to electric bikes wouldn't have some viable charging option. I was actually wondering how long it would take for existing tracks to have charging stations when more of these start hitting the tracks. Super markets and malls have them all around my area for electric cars....

That's quite a cost to add to opening and operating a track. Even just getting a consumers mains run into the property that will handle the current draw of 150 electric bikes charging is going to be damn expensive. Add the kwh cost of actually charging them on the property and you're going to have to have some fairly high entry costs just to cover it.

We are also talking about $10k + bikes here. I also don't see it being huge on a public level but for the private tracks it is a god send. At least until all of the California Eco-Nazis shut down all of the current tracks and electric is the only option. And at that point, like anything else you will just have to pay to play. For myself I am working on an alternator/solar option with a battery bank with a charger and plug built into my van to help alleviate some of that anyways.

Great Review. Thanks.
Its just a matter of time before I make the switch.
My local track I help run for over 20 years and has been there since the 1970s was basically shut down because of noise. We are only allowed to ride 5 days a year.
Alta... now were talking 365 days a year.

Electric bikes are the equivalent of vaping.

Good to hear they ditched the 4CS fork. Did they put better footpegs on the 18? How are the warp9 wheels holding up, are they as shitty as their reputation?

Any other questionable components or does that cover it?

We now operate as a small private club.. kinda for obvious reasons when you can only have 5 rides a year.

That made me laugh out loud!

For me the best part of owning an Alta is being able to roll the bike out of my workshop and ride on my own property without any concern about bothering the neighbors. They don't know I am out there. I put in a 30 minute moto, wheel the bike back in the workshop, plug it in to recharge, lube the chain if I remember, and then it is ready to go tomorrow. And then I can get in a quick vape afterwards if I want! Smile

The owner/service manual for the Alta should be this:

Ride, wash occasionally, lube chain, charge. Repeat over and over.

We rode yesterday and here is a video my son put together:

If Yamaha makes an electric bike they should call it the yze250 or "yeezy250"

I also watched Ping's video on the Alta.

I have been impressed with the progress Alta has made in the last 2 years. Especially lately with the MXR. I seriously considered buying one last fall, but couldn't find a dealer close to me. I even told two local dealers I would buy the first bike they got in stock. No bites...

I ended up picking up a 18 TC250. Now I wish I would of waited for an MXR. Heck, maybe I ought to go ahead & get one. Still no local dealers though, the closest is 3 hrs away.

C'mon Alta get your dealer network act together. And I prefer not to go to a HD dealer to pick one up...

BTW, will the wheel sets off of a newer KTM/Husky fit?

Has anyone ridden an Alta with a left-hand rear brake? Freeing up a rider's lower body has distinct advantages, and the Alta's left grip looks lonely out there.

I have been riding an Alta exclusively since after Day in the Dirt and am beyond impressed with the bike. I did quite a bit of pre-production riding on the '18 and have been riding a '17 almost every day for the last month or so. For those of you with suspension issues I would highly suggest TBT Racing's KYB internal conversion. It is a pricy upgrade because of the need for KYB internals but I was lucky because I happened to have a set of already valved KX450F spring KYB's laying in my garage. I had David Schmidt of Schmidt Performance set them up, and match the stock shock. He now works along with TBT and they were able to get it dialed. I believe he uses a modified Showa piston in the shock as well, which got rid of the "wallow" the bike tends to have in corners and definitely kept it from packing in rolling whoops or blowing through the stroke on the hard landings. As for the 18, the AER fork is night and day better than the 4CS and I really never had any suspension issues with it. It has an updated shock and linkage ratio as well. I have been working with Durham quite a bit and have really been trying to come up with some upgrade options for the Alta as he has a lot of knowledge of the bike after testing with them all summer. The dude knows his shit when it comes to testing and bike setup too. The 18's are great and fix most of the issues I have come across on the 17.

For me, FMX pays the bills but on a good day when I am in race shape I am a half-decent +30 Pro and I haven't felt the bike has held me up at all from trail riding in Moab, free riding in Caineville and Reche or track days in between. I love the convenience of the bike and have had a blast trying to figure it out and ways to improve it.

How does FMX feel on that bike, are the tricks any easier or any harder to do than on a gas bike?

I can see it now. A bookend to an unbelievable career: "DeCoster signs with Harley to spearhead Alta SX/MX effort!"
