Mini to next size 50 or straight to 65.

Has anyone had there kid go from a mini and straight to a 65? This year is my sons last year on the mini since he doesn’t turn seven until June and with Yamaha coming out with a 65 that gives him a whole year to learn how to ride it.

My first bike was a KX65. No prior minibike to that, just casual 50 and 80 four-wheeling.

I turned out just fine.

As long as he is big enough to fit on the bike I think you will be fine. They pick up the clutch and gears pretty quick

We did it a couple years ago went from a KTM mini adventure right to a 65. Wasn't an issue was just a little small on it used starting blocks. Ours had a recluse in it also wish it wouldn't have.

My son is 5 and Im looking to get him a KTM 50 Mini or the SX? Sorry to chime in but I figure I ask your thoughts on that since you're going to a 65! I cant wait to get him one maybe a year or 2! Maybe just buy a YZ65 as soon as they are for sale and see how he handles it?

Went from Jnr SX to KX65 with lowering link(Soupeys), no problems just raise it a little bit more every once in a while

Went from a jr50 to a kx60 back in the day. It was the standard move. There were never really any issues.

With a the mini make sure you keep a spare stator around. They go bad as easily other that there cool little bikes. As for wether you should put him on a SX or mini I would put him on what ever fits him. When I bought my sons mini when he was 4 he had to use starter blocks. I can’t wait to get my boy on a Yamaha, I just hope the 65 there coming out with is competitive.

If the YZ 65 would of came out when your son was 5 1/2 what would you put him on. Best size bike? Or 65?

I would still put him on a 50 mini. He would not be able to race in the 65 class until he turns seven. The mini’s are good bikes to teach your kids the fundamentals to help them be successful in racing and it help gives them confidence. 65 has to many moving parts.

I am in the same boat kinda. My son went from a ktm mini to a ktm sr. He rode the Sr once and wheelied over backwards and would not get on it again. We gave up on trying and bought him a ttr110 instead, now he wants to get back into racing. Age wise he could race a 50 sr class but he is big enough to ride a 65. I think i am going to find a decent used kx65 and put a rekluse in it. We will see.

If he's ready for a bigger bike I would recommend anything with gears, at a young age you set the advantage knowing those skills and I believe it leads to better things. Especially because 50s are very hard on the parents to keep at a consistent reliable level and 65s 85s are a bit easier and funner on both the rider and parents once you have the fundamentals figured out. I would make the jump and get him with a good trainer for a few days to get the info in his head so he has the advantage early.
