Seems like the biggest thing they keep going back to is the KTMs weight but I constantly hear that the scale weight isn't really felt on the track and the bike doesn't feel as light as it is... And I can confirm that myself at least with the 250F version. Overall this whole shootout was cringy and a fail.

Try the Honda and KTM back to back. The Honda feels lighter and way more responsive.

I did ride a 17 and liked it but I think the ktm I made better and comes with better components.

Obviously the Honda is a great package as they come stock. I'm still having a hard time grasping what makes the Honda so good. What are it's strong points?

How do the results start to look when modifications come into the picture? No one runs stock bikes.

I'm still disappointed that lap times don't have a place in anyone's testing, however complex it may be. This is 2018 and the technology is easily and cheaply accessible and we still have to rely on opinions.
I run a stock bike, a lot of people run stock bikes. It bliws me away how many people think mods are required to win.

I thought it was a good, comprehensive shootout. I think that the longer time on the bikes is a very important factor. MXA will always be a great tool for picking out a bike. With that being said, there has been some really stupid shit that has been the basis on deciding which position to give a bike. Chain guide? Who gives a fuck about a $120 part. Stupid shit like that puts it all into perspective. The mxa results (or any of the other rating sources that ive read) are flawed. Still a great read and useful.....not perfection

I dont believe much would change and possibly nothing in mx. But the sponsors that pay the riders wouldn't be happy, imagine AC saying pro circuit parts made no difference. He wouldn't have a job long. I am pretty sure Chad got in trouble with Yamaha in 2008 for saying there was less then half a second a lap difference between him on his factory bikr and a stocker.

I think Jody is finally losing it. This same article was in that magazine and I can't find anything else about this. As a parent with two kids presently racing 50's I would have thought I would've heard about this. I'm still baffled.

MXA normally calls it like it is, but feel they crossed the line by saying they're the only MX 450 shootout that has it right. It comes across as a Nazi type of mentality...
They also contradict themselves by saying the Husky is basically the same bike as the KTM. Wouldn't that make it a 3-way tie then ? Lost some serious respect for the mag after seeing the vid posted..

The Vital shootout was definitely more in depth & provided more of an unbiased ranking results.

Keep up the good work Vital team members !
They listed the Honda and Husky as a second place tie....and then proceeded to ramble about how much better the Husky was than the Honda.

I would go so far as to say my 18 Honda 450 feels very similar to my 16 KTM 350 in weight while on the track. I don't know how they did it, but the Honda also doesn't have the chuggy feel that a 450 typically has....it has a raspy revvy feel like a 350, but with much more boost. As dumb as it sounds it feels like 450cc 350.

Yep. They were speaking from both sides of their mouth so it was hard for me to take them seriously. I've been reading MXA mags since the 80's & have always felt they were the go to for the best available accurate moto info.. On this 450 shoot out they came across as being arrogant by dismissing all the other test shootouts. I also felt they didn't wan't to dethrone the all mighty orange bike by picking the red bike like a few other sources have.
I rode a 17 1/2 KTM450 sxf FE last summer & didn't think it was better than the 18 Honda. Even though the KTM is lighter on the scales it definitely doesn't feel that way while in motion in comparison. Each individual that rides these bikes will come to their own conclusion like I did. As a consumer I don't want to be told to disregard everyone else's work that was put in the shootouts & take theirs as gospel.
After riding mx for 4 decades I will say the new line of 450's are all very good for the average Joe with some minor tweaks. It's up to the consumer on what they're looking for in a particular model. Pick your favorite color & tailor it to you...
