It's not the exemption rule. In fact, it's the opposite. The whole point is about getting a sufficient quantity available to dealers early enough for it to meet guidelines as a production model.

They've also been clever enough to turn that practice into a marketing gimmick.

Minimum quantities which must be available through US
dealers: All Manufacturers – 400 units per model

Importation quantity deadlines:
1. Minimum 200 units March 1st of the current season
2. Minimum 400 units June 1st of the current season

After June 1st, manufacturers must maintain availability of
models homologated for the current season to any AMA pro-
licensed motocross competitor until August 1st of the current
season. This applies unless the manufacturer can supply
documented proof that the units imported to the US as the
minimum requirement were sold to North American customers
before June 1st of the current season. US distributor team
motorcycles are counted as part of the required units up to a
maximum of 8 units. Availability requirements do not apply on
models homologated in previous seasons.

Ehhhhhh. The dates make the rule questionable. You only have to have 200 units in dealers 2 months after the season has started...

The date is the date. It's the same for every bike in pro competition -- March 1st of current season: 200 units. June 1st: 400 units.

And I think 200 is a fair early number. That's definitely production quantities, not works.

As a kid in the late 70’s-early 80’s, I️ dreamed of being able to own one the awesome works bikes from that day. I️ guess that’s what these bikes are.... sort of. Having said that, its also what’s wrong with our sport now. Most folks can’t afford these.... it can’t. I️ think it’s great they offer these bikes but someone needs to focus on the common man. Give me a new gen 2-stroke under $6k.

So, the factory team gets a bike unavailable to anyone else to test with and set up months before the race season starts and everyone else can get theirs months after the season starts. Nope, can't see anything wrong with that "production rule".Dry

To be fair on a smaller scale They all do it. You think Geico just getting their 250f’s this week when all the privateers are getting theirs? Just a bit more hype because Ktm and husky call it factory edition and it’s a “half year model.” All the manufacturers could do the same thing if they wanted.
