Finally making some progress on my bike and able to post something. My best friend donated this bike to me a couple of years ago and it has been slow getting going.

This is what I started with! It literally was a bike in a box, a true basket case.

Added an upper chain roller using a stock forward engine mount and fab'ing it up.

swatdoc's bike is how I have been wanting to do this build, hopefully I can make it half as nice as swatdoc, mini elsinore, newman and the rest of you guys build.

Was hoping for the KLP Replica swingarm but waited too long, waiting to see Stevie D's when available, have to go with the stock one for now.

Looking good PK!!
I think i love the build up as much as ridding them!!
I should have some good stuff to show you re the swing arm in a week or 2. I got the first 'proper' piece of the puzzle back last week. It was the 'test bend' for the RH-lower of the arm, which is the most complicated of the 4 cut and bent pieces. We needed to if Stacy (the uber genius CAD guy thats doing the CAD design work) got the bend tollerences correct. It looks spot on to me but I've sent it over to him to measure and check against the design. (and a 1-1 print out!) If it's all 100% then we can move forward, finalise the axle blocks and the other 3 pressings. And then we'll be cookin! So I should, hopefully have something to actually show you all in a week or 2. Might take a few decent pics of the test bend for you tomrrow anyway.

Building a 1980 CR race bike for a friend before I start mine. See below. Not a perfect build, but nice and solid for racing.
I am waiting on Stevie Denton for his frame kit for my 1980 and his swingarm.

swatdoc - Thanks! I have been wanting to build this thing for so long, after I had the frame powder coated I had to throw the plastic on it to make it seem like a real motorcycle was coming along.

stevie - Looking forward to seeing it!

RF145 - Looks like you are a bit ahead of me. Still need to get some color on my engine and some hardware re-plated.

PK, your build will look great, mine will only be above average as dictated by an agreed selling price.
My personal build will be to the best of my ability and availability of trick parts.

Yeah..... I had to mock mine up a few times to keep the interest going. The time it takes to procure the parts needed to complete the build gets frustrating.......Dizzy

Full Circle rims laced up on powder coated hubs and Buchanan Spokes

Motor powder coated at about a 20% +/- gloss, so just above a flat finish not quite satin.

Fork Legs refinished by Alex Cross

Mounted Forks, yes they are the stock forks. Drilled the hole in the damping rod and Race Tech Springs. At 54 years old I wont be going that fast (not kidding myself). If I found a pair of 39mm Mugen/Factory forks I would go with those, but don't think I could afford them.

Looking good! Keep your eyes peeled for a 41mm front end from an 81 model CR 250/450. Usually find them on the cheap and they work quite well.

After collecting many 1982 43mm KYB’ & 1983 43mm Showa’s with matching hubs and backing plates, I completely changed my mind and went with Race Tech modified 1981 41mm forks. I have PDE triples on order.
That bike shall most likely be my last Red Rocket build.

Great bike to restore. I had the same bike in 1979. Fantastic engine and handling. The only flaws were totaly useless rear shocks (replaced with Fox Air) and I used to twist the swingarm all the time landing from big jumps which would derail the chain.

My bike will get a converted to twin shock 1981 arm until I find the right arm for my bike.

PK97, what is this "drilling a hole in the stock dampening rod" modification that you speak of?

Thanks so much PK! That was an interesting read. Is the article from 1977 or 78? Hard to believe those MX gods were using the super flexy stock forks and swing arms. My slow ass found them a severe limiting factor when I raced the bike on rough and jump filled tracks, so not sure how they did it.

The article mentions drilling a hole of about 1mm one inch down from the top of the dampening rod and not to go larger than 1.5mm. I can't see where the hole is in the picture.

I was searching the internet, and found this piece of info; "If you have the stock 37mm Showa forks and want to make them more supple, consider this... Drill a hole with a #54 bit exactly two inches up from the base of the dampening rod - the opposite of the end that screws into the fork cap. When put back together run 275 cc 5-weight fork oil. This is a recommendation from Al Baker, "back in the day"." A #54 bit measures 1.397mm in diameter.

One article says to drill "at the top" of the dampening rod, the other says to "drill at the base". Confusing. Also not sure if you should to drill the hole all the way through to the other side or just create a port in one side. I assume the latter, though.

Race Tech told me to run 15 weight oil.

Mike,

You are correct that it is the Al Baker mod. I drilled up from the bottom of the rod and just a port. When I got the springs from Race Tech, they recommend and sent me 5wt oil

Thanks again PK.. I ordered everything directly from Racetech.. they sent me the heaviest springs, some pvc pipe to cut to set the preload and 2 bottles of Spectro SAE15 weight fork oil. I asked them about that.. They asked me if I needed oil when I ordered, and I said I had plenty of 5 and 7wt oil, and they told me I needed 15wt, so I said send it to me.

By the way PK, did you drill holes in your OEM front brake arm? I tried that back in '79 to mimic the factory bikes and the cast metal cracked. I did find a place that makes repro billet brake arms.

I will have to retry drilling the stock arm starting with a small sharp bit. Ray Carlstedt and RK Racing have billet versions for you. A little pricy for the small part.

The new parts are piling up.. The Dentons are making me some of those cool HRC engine fasteners.
