Monster Jam. How much, if any, of this racing is real? Not the freestyle stuff, the head-to-head shootouts.

Monster Trucks? Wrestling sounds about right
2/15/2009 3:03pm Edited Date/Time 4/16/2016 10:31pm
Are monster truck events actually races, or are they like an exhibition type of thing, or what? I've never really watched it so I have no idea how it's scored. Are there both types of events? Is it like, a timed thing to see who can complete a course faster? Do they actually have multiple trucks out at a time?

I don't really know why I'm even curious about it.

IMO.... SX is becoming more and more like Monster Jam with each passing year.

That couldn't have anything to do with the exact same Clowns running both events could it?

We sponsor a truck, and I asked.

The response I got was essentially "It's not rigged, like they decide who wins, but they sure do make it easier for their trucks to win"

(CCE now Feld owns some of the trucks, primarily the big name well knowns like Grave Digger and Maximum Destruction)

yeah i read on some bored late night on some dudes you tube video or something that the races are rigged, feld or who ever, owns all the trucks and puts on a play, dunno if its true but the guy owned his own truck and that was his answer to some one's question for why he doesn't enter those races

I wasn't even aware that it was an actual competitive sport.

I don't know about how it is now that CCE/LN/FE has gone in house but for other arena shows my understanding is trucks are paid show money.

The bigger the truck name, like Bigfoot, the more money.

Racing doesn't really matter, except if you don't give it a good effort than you may have a hard time when you negotiate for your next show.

Their bread and butter is their freestyle skills. A flip every now and than pays off in the long run.

The bigfoot drivers can handle their trucks like stewart does his yami.

It is absolutely amazing what those guys can do even in a tight arena.

They are smooth and flawless in their turns (no forward and reverse to make turns) and use every bit of space.

The best show I remember seeing was just two trucks, Bigfoot and Carolina Crusher.

Both were awesome drivers and they really had a rivalry going on to outdo each other.

Agreed... but like my mom always used to say "be careful what you wish for!"

Many of "us" (not me) kept saying that we wanted MX/SX to become main stream, the sport needs to grow etc. I am all for growth but at what cost? What we have now has become almost a Barnum & Bailey atmosphere (Terry Boyd). To me, great racing with great racers working out of Econoline/Box Vans with bikes that didn't cost 20% of a guys yearly wage was a lot more appealing to me. Sure I'm old & grouchy but it all seemed a lot more fun 20-30 yrs ago.

Bigfoot doesn't do CCE/LN/Feld shows, never has. Been a big ugly thing between them for years.

You're likely thinking of Bearfoot

They can't directly rig the outcome, because shit happens....crashes, mechanical issues...but the company owned trucks have several advantages, biggest one being no budget to worry about, so if they drive the piss out of them and blow them up or crash them, it's no big deal as it's not their own money to fix it, it's CCE/Feld's money

Trucks like Escalade and Martial Law are not company owned trucks, but are subcontractors paid show money.

Dave,

If you will actually read my post you will see that I am NOT talking about the CCE/LN/FE shows. Geez, I made it easy and put it in the first sentence.

"I don't know about how it is now that CCE/LN/FE has gone in house but for other arena shows ....."

I know the difference between Bigfoot and Bearfoot, but thanks for jumping in and correcting what you thought was an error.

When the opening ceremonies last longer than the main event, you know you have a problem.

I don't do Supercross in person anymore, outdoors only for me.

I went to a moster jam a few years ago with my wife (free tickets, so why not). By the time we got drunk, the show was over.

I work next to two major sports venues, and deal with alot of TV network people when they are in town for a broadcast. If you think the big networks don't pull strings to influence the outcome of a game, you are being naive. Producers send a call down to ref's all the time, to try to tighten up a score for example.

I don't doubt that there is quite a bit of "influence" in SX already. Scripted? No. But conditions made favorable for a star or sponsored rider?

SATURDAY, STAURDAY, SATURDAY!
COME SEE SUPERCROSS LIVVVVVVEEEE.
WATCH RIDERS BLAH, WHEELIES, BLAH, BLAH, CRASH, BLAH JUMPS!!!!
IT"S GONNA BE AWESOMMMMMMME !!!!!!

I can not stand that damn commercial with that deep voice that is on every 30 seconds! It makes the sport look like a joke, if you ask me!

If motocross and supercross ever want to become a NASCAR type entity, they have to break away from that whole Monster Jam feel.

Monster trucks are an incredible business model. My 6 year old nephew has about $10k worth of Monster Jam shit and goes to the event every time they are near. It serves it's purpose...

I don't think SX is anything like Monster Jam. I happen to like Terry Boyd and think he's really good at what he does. If you've ever had to emcee an event, you know how hard his job is. I like the opening ceremonies too. If they were any other way, you aholes would bitch and moan that you don't get anything for your money and SX needs to take a page out of the UFC playbook. It's a good show, right up until the 450 main Smile

People like to bag on Monster Jam as being redneck fare, but in this area I think it's quite the opposite. Around here I think the majority of local motocross riders tend to be of the "redneck" variety. I really don't mean that in a derogatory way, but the tracks tend to be in rural areas, and more country kids tend to own dirtbikes because they have access to more areas to ride. Living in the New Orleans area, if you want to ride a dirtbike you generally have to drive 1-2 hours to have a place to ride.
In terms of event attendance, we just went to Monster Jam a couple weeks ago and I'd estimate the crowd at 50,000+ in the Superdome this year, whereas last year (first year they returned here since Katrina) the dome either sold out or was close to it (60,000+). And the crowd mostly consists of typical city or suburban families.
On the other hand, New Orleans has lost its SX event due to horrible attendance (in the 30,000 range). It is back for the first time in about 7 years, and I hear tickets are moving slowly. 35,000 would probably be a good crowd, and that isn't enough for us to keep our event. And that crowd is in a large part the die-hard motocross fans. For some reason SX can't pull the family crowd in like Monster Jam does in this area. While my wife, my youngest son and my daughter still usually come to SX, they just find Monster Jam a lot more entertaining.

Monster Jam, monster truck "competitions", mud bogs, tractor pulls...
all of them make no bones about being pure entertainment. Supercross,
on the other hand, is at least based on an actual sport, with it's own
historical record. Unfortunately, the "promotional trajectory", if you
will, has ventured further and further towards the entertainment side
of the equation because stadium seats need to be filled. And it seems
the "sport" has proven to the promoters that it simply cannot generate
enough box office sales when it is promoted just as a sport... so it's
promoted as spectacle.

Supercross as spectacle pales in comparison to Monster Jam. Giant, overpowered, crazily-painted trucks flying all over the place? That show is more visceral, it's far easier to understand, there's no messy
"history" to have to appreciate, it's just noise and flash. Take the
whole family!

i thought all the Feld/LN trucks are owned by Feld now.....and the drivers are all salaried drivers.

the events that Bigfoot and those not owned by Feld are payed show up money but as far as i know if they arent owned by Feld they dont compete in the same events!
