Ruts appeared in the straights in part because of the prep but also because of the weather yesterday. It was cool and cloudy early in the day and that keeps the moisture in the track. I bet they have to put tons of water into the track normally to keep it decent due to the elevation and low humidity.

I dunno you guys complain, complain, complain. We race the track as much as we race each other. Weather and prep gives us conditions that challenge us. And sorry but ruts are part of motocross. When I think of a motocross track in my head I think ruts not flat track corners.

Can't go that fast without ruts. I love ruts, not excessive ruts but really cant go that fast until some good ruts evolve. Fast riders actually want ruts. That's why you don't hear them complain. They may say they were knarly though.

As my old throttle jockey sticker says; let the legend live on, keep supercross indoors.
WTF are you talking about moron? French tracks are smooth now?

How about prepping the track immediately following the conclusion of the weekend races and then growing grass until the next race? Then, just send the guys out without doing anything else.

The old grass tracks were always my favorite...

This.

Well add the MX11 tire at Southwick but other than that, MX32/MX3S every race.

That's true...a lot of very skillful Frenchmen have excelled on the most technical amd rutted tracks

Rutted out tracks remind me of slot car tracks. I don't know how these guys do it, I know I would face plant in a matter of seconds

One of the best Nationals in the history of the sport. Escape Country. The riders were turned loose in practice with banners spread out over the hills with 2' tall grass. Track turned to deep brown loam with green all around it. Was spectacular!

The ruts separate the riders ability, without them everyone goes the same speed. I loved it and honestly cannot believe you guys are complaining. We had great racing and the top 5 in the 1st 125cc moto in the same straightaway !! There's no way Musquin could have fell at the start and caught everyone unless it's tough.

Remember Hangtown last year? They prepped for rain, it didn't happen, (hey, in 2015 they got NAILED 2 days before the race and it was a swamp!) and the track turned out to be a concrete freeway with no ruts anywhere. Racing was one, very fast line, there was little passing, and the riders said it sucked. Last time I rode amateur days at Hangtown National's (profile photo) they were ripping it as deep as the D5 rippers could go - maybe 3 feet. Then they disced in the ricehulls and fresh dirt. It was massively deeper than anything I'd ever ridden. Even amateur day was gnarly.

Yesterday was great racing and the ruts gave riders a LOT of options. I don't like em in the straights, but even there it worked to deliver 3 wide racing in spots as it wasn't just about the fastest line to the corner.

We prep our track with sawdust tilled in. We don't do much in the straights, mostly in corners, and we till 2x as deep in the corners (about 10' in corners). It ruts up real nice and they don't get super deep. Perfect for squids like me.

They're fine in corners.

They're shit on straights.

Simple as that.

If you have left straight right straight left straight all connected by ruts, it's pretty fucking hard to pass.

If the ruts are only in the corners, it makes life a lot easier.

There would be more passing with them not slotted in to a decision for the "next 10 seconds" of every decision tho...

I had to laugh when the leaders came into a couple lappers in one moto yesterday, and one dude hit a right handed rut turn and literally fell right over onto his side like a rank amateur. You know this guy has got to be fast as all get out, but the ruts make some of these guys look silly. Not a fan of them at all.

. Would like to see one of the journalist ask DC if there is a reason for this type of track prep and if the ruts are "desired" on race day.

The desire is to have a safe, dust-free track, and there's not a lot of time between the motos to do a lot of maintenance, so it's at it's wettest in the morning and then takes shape as the day goes on. And when you do water in between motos it can really make it slick, which is what happened at Glen Helen with Jeremy Martin.

Also, the vast majority of the riders I have spoken to like the tracks this way, and the racing yesterday seemed okay to me.

I remember that national. I also got to race on it once. It was a clusterfuck for us mortals. I laugh now thinking about it. It was slightly less slippery than a mud track due to very thick overcast that day. The tall wet grass was so slick you could barely stand up on it and lots of people were sliding all over. Now in the late 70's at the series type races there would be a couple hundred beginners and novices. Imagine all of us trying to get practice in. Some guys never made a lap. I think I got around twice. It was hilarious and once the sun came out and the exp/ints got the track cut up it was incredible.

You nailed it. I quit motocross for this very reason. I could still get around a track very respectably, but got sick of the mud and ruts epidemic that has infected the local tracks.

What's funny is that most tracks are reduced to 80% posers who can hardly get around these rutty tracks. But they love to sit on their tailgates with their flat bill Monster hats and talk about how gnarly the track is.
You quit because of mud??? Mayb u didn't get the memo, but nothing is more fun than racing in mud... So u r saying u quit because u don't like having fun?
