1991 CR134 Resto-Mod

It was built for one race, which it did last Sunday.
It'll do the same one race every year, as it was the track I wanted to ride on this particular bike as a teen, but never did. (Until a few days ago - just 14 years later than expected)

(Quick stuff in the fields starts at approx 7:30)

The engine's a monster for a 125 once it's on the pipe. The motor feels like an SX150 to ride.

The chassis is fantastic, and the new front end does a great job of controlling the head shake.

Current colour scheme is late '90 factory 250 colours. (But without the HRC rad panel decals) as they're the last great looking CR in my opinion.

I have '91 shrouds too, so it will go to original '91 colours for next years event (frame number actually makes it a '91)

I got my lower fork guards in today, just waiting on my orange showa stickers! Thanks for the lead.

It got another run out today.
A couple of suspension tweaks and a little more advance on the ignition, and it's a little better again to ride.

It's so much fun to ride, I can't stop using it.

Awesome to watch you ride this 125, makes even more excited to get my cr125-90 done.

Are you sure that the clutch is ok on your 125? Sounds like its slipping as soon as you hit the powerband. No steady increase in engine rpm, just hits a high rpm and stays there.

Regards Marco

Funny you should say that Marco, as it had crossed my mind.
Doesn't feel like it when you ride it, but really sounds like it sometimes.

The ground was really dusty over Hardpack though, so there was a lot of wheelspin.

Now it's had about 6 hours of use, I'm planning to drop the oil and coolant, pull the head to check the piston crown, and I'll pull the clutch pack at the same time.

The steels and friction plates are at least 15 years old, as they were in it when I bought it. They measure up as new, but may be contaminated.

Currently building wheels for it's next incarnation. Satin black powder on the hubs, with the faces cleaned back as OE.
Front wheel is CRF, but now looks suitably retro.

Also have '91 shrouds, a VRP tank, NOS CEET Safari seat cover. and a fresh works finish PC system for it.

Once the wheels are finished, it'll be a case of working out what combination of parts looks right.

Making slow progress, but still moving forward.

A little more to do to get the tank back to A1 condition. (Dent removal and a helicoil)

Can't wait to get back out on it and twist the throttle.

Did you lace a19 inch rim GLM?
Was it you they has a Boswell Mikuni for your 125?
Your CR looks great!

Cheers!

Yes, it's a 19" rear rim. In all honesty, I'm not fast enough to tell the difference Between that and an 18" MX tyre, but I prefer the look.

Mine just has the stock PJ carb.

Were did you get the radiator graphics? I'd like a set for my 91 CR250R I'm building.

They came from Dirk Timmer in the Netherlands as far as I remember.

The quality's terrible, and they're not sized correctly either so they overlap the bolt holes.

I just stuck them on because I couldn't be bothered to send them back.

I actually dragged the bike out of the garage a couple of weeks back after it sitting in the garage for a couple of years. (I'd never even ridden it on the newly built wheels)

As my EXC was having a suspension rebuild and revalve at MX-Tech, I decided rather than not racing, that the little Honda was going to do another Hare and Hounds.
A pitstop 3 laps in to make some adjustments to the clickers on the TC Showa forks, and it went really well despite being hard work in the giant load of 1st gear switchback nonsense that was the woods sections.

The rear '95 shock struggled in places. Really need to get my Ohlins rebuilt and have both it, and the forks valved to suit.

I put a new clutch pack in, and the engine's a total ripper now it can get the power down. Really struggles off the bottom thanks to the porting on the '92 barrell (even with '99 PV's) but there's no shortage of HP once it's up on the pipe.

I see the overlap on the HRC and bolt holes now. That sucks. Sad

I'm know a local shop can do them here but I'll pay extra to get them designed so I was hoping for an easier solution.

I have a late 90s YZ125 shock that I plan to test fit in place of the stock 91 KYB shock. It's the 46mm piston unit with 16mm shaft that KYB ran from the mid 90s to more recently. I just need to swap over a late 90s KYB CR clevis to get it to be right. I found a shock that someone hard coated and install a works HS/LS adjuster and oversized bladder for the build. Interestingly enough the YZ shock is much wider at the top bearing but Honda uses a wide clevis with welded in spacer so there should be plenty of room. I'm building up the suspension now as the motor is ready to go. Smile

Make sure you take off the spring and run the shock through the stroke to ensure you don't have a binding issue with the smaller clevis. It shouldn't but better to check than learn the hard way! Smile

Doesn't touch at full droop, and because of the way the linkage moves, the link moves up as part of the progression.

Is the tm shock the same length? And what is the eye to measurement?
I have a 91 and seem to be going down a similar path..
I have a scored 99 barrel and pv which would be good for a big bore.

What piston have you used?
Thanks
5/28/2017 2:22pm
Yeah, TM shock is the same length as they share all the shock / swingarm geometry with the wheel framed CR's.

I've got a '92 barrell and head on mine, so have gone to a flat-topped piston (wiseco) to suit the big-bore, as round topped >'91 pistons in a +2.00 are few and far between.

The head's really been decked hard to get 0.8mm squish and had the comp. chamber re-cut to suit. Can't remember the exact specs, but I have them written down somewhere.

Ive seen a few on shocks on ebay, gas gas & TM - they seem very similar at 17" / 432 mm eye to eye.
I havent pulled my shock out , but did a roughy measured around 435mm, so a shorter shock than other year cr's

Ta for info on the flat top/vs round pistons.

Any reason you chose 56 vs a 58 mm piston?

Awesome build!!! Turned out mint!

Cheers Chuckle.

SA63; it matches the OE shock length. I'll have a measure up next time I'm in the garage.
I didn't want to go for a 144, or whatever as typically with the big bore, it shifts the power lower, and makes it less willing to rev, particularly when you consider that the more you bore from the barrel, the lower the ports start to become too.
I went with the 134 because I wanted more power in the midrange, but still wanted a bike that'd rev out ok.

I race a 200 KTM in Hare and Hounds, and that motor's just a bored and stroked 125 anyway.
Couldn't have 2 bikes the same, so I have one for woods and one for MX practice.

Sorry for bringing up an old thread! Don’t happen to remember which year TM you used? Thanks
