What are the rules for passing under a yellow flag? Reed passed Millsaps in a section littered with yellow flags Saturday night. Reed entered the section 2 bike lengths behind, and a yellow flag to his immediate left. He then tripled past Millsaps right next to the accident scene.

I thought passing under yellow was a rule violation, but I 'm not certain.

No passing under yellow's are amateur rules. AMA pro has a complete different set of standards for that.

That's what I thought when it happen. The yellow flags are for the down riders safety so tripling is a big no no.

Wrong

You may "jump with caution"
Whatever that is

You may pass under a yellow as well

In pro racing, a yellow flag is merely a "head's up"
Little more

Red Cross flag is no jumping

Even so they could have penalized Reed 1 whole minute and he still wouldn't have lost a position.

"Proceed with Caution" seems rather nebulous. Millsaps approached the triple, saw about half a dozen folks gathers between the second & third jump, and double/singled. Reed took all three and completed the pass (albeit he was on the outside & farther from the crash scene). That was probably a borderline red-flag situation, but the down rider was alert and exiting the scene, so yellow was appropriate.

Not that it made any difference in this situation, as Reed was going to pass Millsaps anyway. However, two guys battling for position could have different concepts of "caution". Race referees should try to minimize their impact on race results, and it seems that the current yellow flag rule leaves too much to individual interpretation.

I think the rules should be that you can't pass under a yellow flag. I used to get passed under yellow flags all the time because I would slow down a bunch, and whoever was behind me would completely disregard the flag and try to get around me any way possible.

It's too dangerous to have guys passing each other in a yellow flag section, especially in Supercross where the track is pretty narrow, and especially in a whoops section!

Some people do find the yellow (like the blue) flag a good time to make time...Many people, especially flaggers, have been hurt for this reason.

And that's why rules are different for the Pros...
Same with any sport, my small peckered friend.
When you move up to the big league, you have to adjust accordingly.

True, especially in the Lites class, but you still have the rest of the track to try and make a pass. If you were the hurt rider on the ground at the end of a gnarly whoops section, I am sure you would appreciate if the other riders weren't trying to make a pass at the cost of crashing into you.

If yellow flags uniformly represent "caution", then their appearance during a race must solicit a uniform response from the racers. Allowing the riders to define "unsafe" does little to alleviate the risk, and in some cases may actually increase risk, as each rider interprets the situation differently. If the "big league" thinks a 17 year old rookie will assess a situation in the same way as a guy in his mid-20's with a wife, kid, & mortgage, they are sadly mistaken.

Perhaps another flag is in order:
Yellow = Caution, but passing allowed
White w/Red Stripe = caution, no passing, but continue at or near race pace (or a fine Jamacian beverage is waiting in the pits)
Red Cross = no change from current status

What are the yellow flag rules in MotoGP and F1?

MotoGP/ F1/ ALMS/ etc all use the no passing under a yellow flag. If the yellow flag just in a certain corner, known as a "local yellow" you may not pass from that point until the next corner station.

IRL and GrandAm actually have a cool system in the cars that flashes a yellow light. You may resume racing when the light goes off.

The only line was to the left I believe, DM did the right thing and slowed, 22 saw the flag went faster and took the line from Davey, may be legal, but it was dangerous.
