I know when I think of my heroes growing up, each has a certain "look" in my mind. David Bailey, orange/blue JT pants, white Jersey with orange roost protector and the classic orange/blue JT helmet. Broc Glover in all pink. Ricky Johnson in the red/blue Fox gear. Jeff Ward in all white Sinisalo. Ron Lechine with both the flouresent green JT pants and later the "Dem Bones" gear. Hannah with red boots. I even think of Scott Burnworth and the all black Hallman gear.

That said, it's not a bad thing for a guy to have a certain, signature look... then mix it up every once in a while.

I agree, but I am old school. I think the gear should match the bike. KR yellow gear was hideous. Some of Seelys gear is hideous.

Personally the Astars gear is also hideous. The stuff Barcia and Tomac wear does nothing for me.

Chad is usually on point with colors.

Call me old school, thats just how I learned to love the sport with Johnny O and David Bailey always matching the bike. Wardy used to match until late in his career.

Hannah always matched.

I enjoy seeing what the pro's are wearing each week and I enjoy seeing the variations in colors and designs, even if I have already seen that gear before when it was released. It's still cool to see what Reed or Roczen will wear each Saturday night. Having said that, I hate that Eli consistently wears his same Green/Hi Viz color each weekend. I am pretty sure I recall him poking fun at his 'boring' gear setup this past off season. I would imagine he is contracted to only wear green-ish gear, kind of like Reed was back in the day at Yamaha with his blue gear. In this day and age, I find that odd. I know that Kenny was able to get him and Seeley back control over their helmets at HRC Honda this year, as Honda previously controlled their guy's helmets in the past with the 'Ride Red' theme. Maybe Eli can get his rights back to wear some color.

So the real question is how the hell did Eli get to wear the LE Indy gear that matched the LE boots?! I hope that wasn't a one off thing. Astars has some really cool colorways that I would like to see on the current #1 rider in the world...

First good gear set Alpinestars have put out in forever! And ironically, he was nominated for lit kit wearing the same green and red santa bullshit combo he wears every fucking week... then missed when he wore this and they gave it to FXR's abomination...

I gave Pulp and 722 a hard time about it on insta, Steve said it's "opinions bro".... Whist I get that, art is somewhat like music, there are actually design principles that make stuff work and about 85% of gear companies out there regularly have shit out that shows none of their designers have a fucking clue.

Colour theory, dynamics, contrast, and even view points, some of the gear might look ok when it's in your hand but from the 10metres or the stands? Not to mention every design that has to have an outline because it's actually poor design.

Drives me nuts.

I believe this is a "priceless" commercial.

I don't know the in between lines, but it should end with...

"the satisfaction of knowing your wife has no choice but to watch Supercross on Sat night, and she notices Tomacs gear, therefore shows interest....Priceless"

ORRRR

Perhaps future headlines...

Just economics bro.

There's a lot of dollars being invested in racers looks to sell a lot of dollars worth of gear.

Like ML said, it's Kawi that denotes a lot of what their riders wear. They were super strict about keeping him in all white boots too but finally relaxed on that. Probably because he was winning every time he wore something other than white boots haha!

Ecktiknap nominates three riders/gear sets every week and then the public votes for the winners of those three.

Same thing with PC when they were in Thor. Mitch only let them have one set for indoors and one set for outdoors. Pretty crappy deal when you sell 20 different colorways but your biggest team wears just one.

Yep... So was Eli's green gear more "lit" that week than every other week he wore it? Was the FXR gear just less gaudy that week? There were 100% some better combos on track that week...

Opinions and assholes... doesn't mean they're right!

Lately? You've not been paying attention!

Design is what I do dude... almost 15 years, different agencies, a degree and a masters... Like I said... there are actual reasons and principals that make them work... Just a comment, a lot of the designers could use a refresh, cause there is a lot of crap design in mx...

What else have I been pissy about? SX format? Well, it's fucked so I'm ok with that.

Do you remember what week Eli was nominated? I didn't pay attention to the noms until the last few weeks. Just curious is all.

Yea pretty sure Kawi and Monster combined make him wear the green. I've never really loved Astars stuff to begin with. The green gets a little boring sometimes. I was super excited when he wore the blue and orange in Indy. Though I will admit it was a little harder to spot him in the middle of the pack without the green that I'm so used to looking for. I'd like to see more patterns or color combos even if it is just green black and white. They can make that look a lot cooler than they have been making it look.

I suppose its one less thing to think about when he doesnt really have control over it. But he will never win the lit kit award with what he's got.
Do you have inside info that makes you "pretty sure"?

It was the week after that orange gear I think, or before. Doesn't matter. It was the nasty ass santa gear.

That Hannah deal is so true. Searched for an exception and other than some red, white and blue for the des nats (we'll give him a pass for that, of course), he's flawless.

I do have to say that the 722 has been on thin ice with some of the nominees. Just saw the latest contestants, Reed again with the Fox gear that the PC Kawi riders have been rocking all season long? Well my vote will go to Tickle.

Anyways, i have always been a huge Alpinestars fan. It gets a bit boring to watch Febvre, Herlings, Tomac ride with the same gear in 80% of the races. But i guess that Yamaha, KTM and Kawasaki have their say in it, which i understand.

Glad he and Barcia's Alpinestars stuff is looking better than ever. The first year that Justin wore that "custom" stuff that Alpinestar was giving him...some of it (IMO) was hideous to say the least. I haven't seen anything on either he or Eli recently that wasn't cool.

Ok, ok...Barcias camo AStars gear kit was pretty cool.
Indeed, that camo gear was so sick. Would love to own a set!

Edit:
Words doesn't do that gear justice, so here you go:

Shift and troy lee are the only ones doing it right currently IMO. The a stars crap has been crap for years. Alessi used to have some nice shit like 10-12 years ago from them. Wasn't so damn busy. The current gear design team there must take a lot of X and listen to techno. Laughing

Some gear looks good standing next to it and some gear looks good on the track and some gear looks good doing both.

I have Shift, TLD and Fasthouse in my gear bag. If I purchased something else, it would be the green stuff Tomac is wearing, the stuff looks good on the track to me!

Just something Eli said in an interview, he didn't flat out say it but the question was asked and that's what he eluded to. So maybe I was reading to much into it.

I like Alpinestars and have worn their boots for a long time, but in my opinion their gear is absolutely atrocious. The color combinations that they use seem to be thrown together in an attempt to look as bad as possible.
