Go for the KTM 450XC and you'll love it for MX too. You nailed it, weight and e-start. The steel frame, brakes and mid wide ratio trans also close the deal. This is state of the art and bridges the offroad and MX better than most.

I went a step further with a 6-spd and full street gear and more grunt on a Beta 500 (480). It MX's great and it's easy to pull the extra gear off. About the same price but not as light.

Im doing a ton of research on buying a new bike and cant make up my mind. Im more in the woods than on the track but I do greatly enjoy riding mx.

Ive always had jap bikes and ran them in the woods. Never had a machine made for the woods (ie ktm xc) and the more I read the more I hear its futile to make a japanese 450 mx bike do anything as well as a ktm xc if your woods riding. As far as the power I have never felt a 450 mx bike was too much in the woods, I actually felt they are pretty user friendly and the extra torque helps me a bunch. The e start and the weight are the 2 things I keep coming back to and are areas ktm cant be beat in. Plus, like I say ive never had a ktm so maybe I just dont know what im missing.

Ive looked at the 350xcf alot the last few days, Im not sure whether it would fit me like a glove or Id be left wanting more and wishing I had got a 450. I love the off idle grunt of a 450, it makes short work of hairy situations. my leading jap bike would be a rmz450.

anyone with good info, please help a brother out
This kind of woods?

The Rx is a couple thousand less than a KTM is around these parts. Buys quite a few titanium bolts, think seat, and exhaust and the weight is right there with a KTM. Keep in mind 3 or 4 lbs to be saved by switching to a lighter battery too. I just pretend it's as light as a KTM, my 17 r model. Pretty effective really lol. Wallet likes

Rode a new stock 17' yz450fx this weekend and thought it was a pretty good bike. This is also coming from someone that has practically only ridden ktms. The guy said he wanted to buy a ktm but it was 2k more. After looking up the specs, I realized the ktm is probably justified at 2k more considering it weighted 20lbs less out of the box. For him though I would say it was money well spent on the Yamaha.

When the ego needs to be stroked, the 450 is the only way to go. But realistically a 350, even a 250f is going to do better work in the tight woods then any 450. Out of 250+ racers in our series less than a handful ride 450s and can actually do decent on them. I used to believe I couldn't live without a 450 due to that 'grunt', even then I had my Yamaha detuned. Then I made a large drop to the 250FX and guess what, I still did equally as well if not better...Now I'm on a new 350 and though I have found the learning curve to riding the bike efficiently a little longer to learn, after a short gearing change the 350 is everything everyone wishes a 250f to be...

There is no replacement for owning a light weight bike. A 350xcf is closer to 28lbs lighter than a 450FX and 26lbs lighter than a 450RX. Maybe not a big deal when your riding a bit more open stuff, but when the going gets tough, it's considerably easier to manage a bike that's 30lbs less then one that is more.

The 350xcf doesn't come without faults though. No backup kickstarter, no HO stator (Yamaha FX stator leaves 100w+ for aftermarket stuff). But you do get superior clutch components, a 6spd, light weight, hydro clutch as well as the experience of what KTM has built into their bikes....For the long haul, the Yamaha FXs are hard to beat in terms of durability and I am sure the Honda RX is much the same. But for flat out performance the KTMs in 250/350/450 are hard to beat.

I can tell you from experience that an rmz450 has a TALL 1st gear, so youll need at least 2 more teeth out back. That tall first gear uncovers the weak clutch pretty quickly also. Put in heavier springs at least.
I need to do this..
