Agree. Obviously he has balls and tried stuff that others didn't but he grew up winning amateur titles and his lanky frame threw the 125 around a national track faster than anyone else in that era. Realistically, the 125 class 15-20 years ago was more about technique than anything. Compared to the lites bikes of today those bikes were severely underpowered and the riders couldn't rely as much on their bikes as they do in current times. Deegan won a race for this reason on a largely stock privateer 125, this would never happen today. You think a privateer on a stocker could hang with a Pro Circuit guy today? If anything it was a lot more about the rider than the bike in that era, which speaks volumes about Travis' racing ability.

But what do I know?
True, but there were some really fast short dudes on 125's...like Bucklew (and a few other notable height challenged guys...)

TP was not a good racer. what made him win was his willingness to hang it out everytime he raced. which is why he crashed so much

If you compare to Dungey, who is cool collected and steady and well boring to watch.
while TP is the complete opposite who is flashy exciting and a loose wire.

TP is loved because he is a showman, which is why he fits better into the Nitro Circus than Team Suzuki
Sidenote: When Pastrana was on his 125 - he was without a doubt the fastest 125 racer in the world a.k.a: A GREAT racer.

Fastest in the world on a 125?... Not to discredit TP who is beyond talented but I think a lot of people would agree that a certain #259 Kawasaki was hands down the fastest 125 the world has ever seen.

I think you misunderstood his post. TP199 was racing before JS7. He's right, while he was on 125's he was the fastest 125 racer in the world.

Lookup the Des Nations footage of TP199 on the buck two five.

he was fast, but as a career racer you need to be able to focus on more than the current race. He has stated that he went for it in every race and its why he didnt last. He didnt have the title in mind necessarily. He was a "first or last" racer. meaning he was go for broke each race. unlike dungey who has no problem taking a 2nd as long as he is there down the road

Pastrana was fun to watch because he was "all or nothing". I think he crashed more than James Stewart.

Remember watching a 15 year old TP199 racing A class at Budds Creek. He would damn near lap 2nd place some races. Dude is so naturally talented it's crazy.

Would have loved to be at Farm14 this weekend.

Travis is a 2 time champion. There are lots of idiots at the track willing to send it over anything but they don't turn into champions for it. Travis was immensely talented. His desire to do other things in his life is the reason he didn't win 250 titles.

anybody remember (and have one they can post) of a deal that ESPN magazine did on him where they had him write a letter to his younger self? Several athletes participated, but Travis' was the best. In true Travis form, he made fun of himself and said something along the lines of "Stay away from corvettes!!" (alluding to the crash in the Vette that began his exit from racing)

Edit: FOUND IT.

Thank you for sharing this, what a great read. Sometimes what looks like a dream evaporating is just the beginning of an even greater opportunity. The message is to stay positive no matter what your circumstances.

My daughter when she was young really like Travis so I bought her videos and we watched the videos and every race we could that he participated in. Those videos started when he was a little boy and wow, what a natural rider he was. I remember even a tiny Davi Milsaps jumping a huge jump on one of TP's videos and he was about 8 yrs old! There was a video of TP, J Stewart and RC riding in the back seat of a car when they were young kids. Good memories of all of these great riders and especially Travis Pastrana.
PS, Travis' dad was a complete nut!!

Classic Pastrana.

2001 Sydney Supercross. Knocked off the track in turn 2 by dirty ass loser Chad Reed. That just seems to light a fire under his ass and he hangs it all out 120% after that. Catches Reed and blows past him, tweaks his knee in a turn, cases jumps, crashes, get up and still goes 100%.

TP was not the fastest rider but he had more heart and drive each race than JS7 could scrape together in a season. No complaining about bikes, tracks, setup, other riders. Just pure determination.
