BRUTAL!
I part out animals for a living and always thought with my knowledge of mechanics and muscle composition I could play doctor for tumor removal, plugging holes or plating breaks when this Civil War breaks out.
However when a highly paid athlete at the top of their game and sport that relies 100% of his profession and future health is in under your care, skill and decision making I realize what a meat head I am! And thankful for the years these doctors and their families endured in higher education and for their teams surgery expertise!

I'm not an expert by any means, but those look like they could be fasciotomy incisions.. Basically an intentional incision performed by the doctor to relieve the pressure built up from swelling or compartment syndrome. I had a 7 inch fasciotomy incision stay open on my upper arm for 4 days after I tore my brachial artery last summer and had compartment syndrome. Scary stuff, hoping for the best!!!

looks like it... he had mentioned that a number of incisions were still open and in this latest pic, nothing is needed to keep the wound open other than swelling. the main incision looks very similar to the pics of jimmy decotis when he had his surgery.

ironically, the Forearm Strong tool is meant to stretch the facia to allow blood to flow more freely.

I had the exact same surgery done on my left arm after shattering my wrist, because it turned into compartment syndrome.

Looks like they did a full fasciotomy on his forearm like previously mentioned. They did the carpal tunnel surgery as well which is what you see on his hand.
Gnarly recovery ahead for him hopefully his nerves are still fully functioning. Took a good 8 months for feeling to come back for me in my left hand from the severity of the swelling and surgeries. Until the swelling goes down in that forearm they're going to keep that forearm wide open.
Can definitely say hes tough as nails. Hang in there man.

As long as he has no nerve damage, yes like new. Normal aches and pains down the road though like most breaks.

Yeah, I know in my case the doctors were pretty transparent with me about what my possible outcomes were. They have to telling be him all sorts of best/worst case scenario's and that shit is tough to swallow. Props to him for, seemingly, staying so positive through this!

That guy had no clue what he was about to go thru!

Roczen has to be the first rider to keep fans informed about what's going on, every step of the way.

Agree 100% and I think it's cool he is keeping everyone updated and showing the gruesome surgery pics b/c I don't think a lot of people put into perspective what these guys go through. Had Tomac done this same thing after his huge crash maybe there wouldn't be so many people wondering "what's wrong with him, why isn't he winning, etc." The fact these guys bounce back from this stuff is incredible and I have no doubt we'll see KR winning races again.

I completely agree. I had to get a plate and screws in my shoulder about 5 years ago for a pretty bad grade 4 separation and mine is still not the same as it was prior, even after having the hardware removed. There's nothing "wrong" with it, but it's definitely "different" and took a long time to get back to where I was confident in using it the same. Hell, and all I'm doing is just some local level BMX racing and straight forward workouts like push-ups, etc. I can't imagine getting BOTH shoulders done and then bouncing back in the short time Tomac did and then ride effing supercross on a 450. It actually blows me away he's able to be at the level he's at. And yes, I know he's a full time athlete and has the time and resources to aggressively rehab with the best care available. But still, anyone who's had a bad shoulder injury should be able to realize how tough it must be for Tomac to come back from it.

Who is the special surgeon's name he flew out of town for and where is he located? Do a lot of top athletes go to this doc? Would be nice to know in case of a serious injury. Some doctors are real hacks.

Looks to me like they performed a fasciotomy which helps relieve pressure from swelling. I had one when a fence post went through my arm in a car crash. It healed rather quickly but I didnt break any bones.

Fasciotomy incisions? Tell me more, how do they prevent infections from entering the exposed wound? How do they get it to close back up after the swelling goes down?
I had a large wound on my right leg from a foot peg that was sewn up then got infected and later had stitches removed. It looked similar. Then after the staph infection was under control it took forever to close and get back to normal. Well over a year.

I was sent to the Steadman Clinic in Vail for my MRI in 1999. They kept Terrel Davis put together back in those days so I was proud to go there. Cool

Still boggles my mind that he was in the spinner just a couple days after. You could see the pain on his face, must have been torture just getting on the damn thing.
