What's so different? Whoops are smaller...but big whoops are good for what, injuring riders and making Chad happy?

Back in the day, two-strokes were harder to rider (which made them less consistent), guys weren't running LitPros on their helmets (so they were trying more things in an effort to find out what was faster...or not), and the track building was way less consistent than it is now (despite what Chad or Jeremy Martin might tell you).

Other than that? What's different?
i would have to guess the consistency of the track builds is a factor. additionally, the obstacles seem to be more peaked or have more lip to get the bikes up more.

I think the problem is at this point, its that the builders have become, too efficient. its not knock on them just theyve gotten Too good for their benefit. its more like you use computers for assembly lines so you get a consistent product.

all the obstacles have blue prints. Every one of them must be made the same every time. so at the new venue, the triple you hit last week is the same size next week.

While i understand it helps get the track built faster it makes each track less unique.

Why not this week have a 100" triple? Maybe turn the triple into a double instead.

The obstacles are too similar week to week and that is the problem.

Best track of the last ten years, THE TP199 St Louis track

It looks to me that the actual speed the bikes could carry back in the early two stroke days were much slower. Now, I don't know if that was due to less power, or tracks that were less flowing, or both. I think it's OK to have a chopped up, non flowing track that is technical if it keeps the speeds down. Less speed = less chance of serious injury IMHO. The races today it looks like the bikes are flying (speedwise). Sometimes it seems like when you slow things down, more guys tend to bunch up and get into battles. Not saying I have any answers, not sure there is a defined question here. Just making an observation.

Two strokes are not part of the reason why the racing was better back then. The track designs tested the riders ability and technique on the bike as well as the riders race craft. The racers had to be a master of his technique in order to battle for a podium spot. Now guys are pretty much gym rats and focus on cardio and training vs improving their abilities on the bike by riding during the week more. I remember seeing RC4's schedule during the week and he was in the gym maybe an hour here or there, but mainly the dude was plugging away laps and practicing different techniques. No matter what you do in the gym, it will not replicate actually riding the bike. I just don't understand if track builders are so efficient these days and great at what they do, why aren't we seeing more interesting track builds with obstacles to test the riders ability? When they try to make something interesting, everyone whines and they knock it down because heaven forbid a rider has to actually use some technique other than scrubbing to go fast. Instead we are fed the same track week after week and there are hardly any battles in racing anymore. Pretty much everyone gets spaced out and rides their own race vs battling with each other for positions. I would bet that if today we had a track like the 09 St Louis track or anything from the early 2000's, the top guys in the class would struggle and the old dudes like Reed & Stewart would shine.

There seemed to be a lot more seat bouncing back then. Be it from bikes, or jump faces or run up out of the corner I don't know. They started mellowing out the triple lips over the years once James started clipping foot pegs from scrubbing. There's no way today's guys could scrub those triples from the 90's. They had to preload at the base of the lip just to keep from nose diving.

I agree, the tracks seem boring. At SD it was cool seeing guys not able to do every obstacle. But in general they aren't as tec as they were. But that was long ago.

Tracks are an issue.... But really a derivative of the bikes.

Suck my balls if you don't agree. The 250 class is 98% of the time more entertaining, because the bikes can be ridden hard.

Apart from the odd occasion we have a close race, most of the time watching 450s is like listening to a quiet wet fart seat bounce the base line in three. At least the 250 guys look like they're going nuts to do it.

If the track are too easy, then how does Roczen & Dungey make so much time up on the others ?

A1 was easy by their standards. Massive lead.

San Diego was much more tech. Massive lead.

You're never gonna change that. The best will always be the best, and MX is fucking hard, maybe one of the most complicated sports on earth... the start is huge, so the margins can be massive.... add confidence and bike setup and sometimes it's downright boring.

BUT. The racing is ALWAYS better in the small class. Always! Dungey v Roczen happens all the time in the tiddler class... Always has. 'Cause the mortals can ride a little bike really freaken hard to keep up with the demigods.

If I listed my 100 favourite races, I'd bet 30% are in the big class, and that's being a RJ, Kiedrowski, Huffy, Fro and Reed nut....

what made 2 stroke more interesting is mistakes were more prevalent. people switched over to 4 strokes because they were easier to ride and reduced mistakes made by riders.

they also made carrying speed much easier

I was talking about this with my son today. We were thinking about the 2004 series, one of the Anaheims had a split start, with first turn chicanes opposite each other. It made for some good racing and line selection.

I talk often with my moto buddies and we all go back to 09 as the last best year, when the riders designed the tracks.

I understand they have streamlined the design to make it more consistent to build. but jesus they really need to re-think what they are doing imo.

They should double the height of the triples, wall jumps and single to flat landers. People should be walking into a sx saying "woah, look at that triple!" That stuff has been the same for 20 years.

Look at MEC, "woah, look at that start....."

I dont see how you can argue about old sx track design. They definitely used to be way more technical. I try hard to enjoy sx nowadays but its kinda like Im watching nascar. Watch the start, doze off from boredom, wake up just in time to catch last few laps.

My formula would be real berms, longer more technical rhythm sections, and whoops that guys in the C group wouldn't think about blitzing. Dirt Wurx is 1 for 2 so far this year. Awful track at A1, better at SD.
