I believe that was the only thing they didn't change

Yosh single or dual? I'm assuming dual as I haven't seen a single available for it.
Dual, Yoshimura only made dual systems for the last model and that's all they'll have for this bike as well.

I know I am in the minority, and I really am slow and old. I had a 2008 CRF450R and I thought it was great, but I am also on the short side at 5-7. The bike hit really hard as carbbed bikes do which made it feel super fast, but also made it hard for a rider like me to manage.

I sold it and got a 2013 which IMHO is soooooo much better in every aspect. Its way lighter, way narrower and a bit lower. The powerband is so much smoother and after mapping it, its every bit as good as the 2008 ever was, actually way better as it is so linear and smooth. No local rider needs the power of a KTM 450.

If the 2017 got bigger, it might not be better for me, I wasnt going to buy one anyways as my bike is way more than I could ever need.

I am just very happy to hear people saying good things about Hondas again. IMHO the best brand ever, and the only MX bike I would ever own. Take a Honda off the showroom and compare it to any other brand and it wins in quality hands down. Compare those two bikes 5 years later, and the Honda stills wins, over an even larger margin.

I'm a short old guy: the new bike was easier to throw a leg over and I'd get the version with E-start, the RX.

The bike is really slim and not too tall even for smaller guys, but the engine has so much power. I liked the mildest mapping most and with that the bike is really easy to ride, but still plenty fast. I used Litpro to see if it was any faster than 2016 in starts and it was around 0,1 - 0,2 sec faster to 18,3 metres (3rd gear starts). The rear tire hooks really good both in straights and in corners, so when you grab some throttle the bike doesnt't slid around but goes on rails. The stock suspension settings were too soft, but just going a few clicks harder on comp helped a lot. We were testing both R & RX, so the day was pretty busy and we didn't have a ton of time to play around with the settings.

The intros were saying around $650.00 to be expected for those parts plus a battery. Battery around $100.00?

MBR, what is your first impression between the RX and R ? I am planning on getting an RX but if they are still several weeks out I was thinking of just getting the R and putting ES on it later. I can pick up an R today.

thanks

I'm glad these bikes are finally hitting dealers and looking forward to the tests and comments and opinions to start rolling in.

I'd consider one if they are any where near the hype they have received.

Or...if ya want the Electric Start ALREADY installed...AT THE FACTORY...

Get the RX for $400 more than the R and spend that extra money on a 19" rear. I'm sure someone will chime in about the difference in gas tanks. No worries, I like the 2.2 gallon off-road tank better. btw, the RX has different shrouds, too.

Other than that, there's a kickstand (easily removed with a simple part/left foot-peg mount), an 18" rear, different maps and slightly different engine hangars/mounts.

So. for $400 more...you get...more.

Me? I'll add a set of Black Dirt-Stars on Red hubs and call it a day.

my issue is my race season starts the first weekend of January. Missing the first round cant happen. So, if the RX is not here, just get the R, buy an 18" rear, now I have a spare, and buy the ES later when available. Should be plug and play, no biggie. As far as a tank, I would want an IMS anyway for baja rides, so the only thing left is engine mounts, no big deal to swap out. Suspension gets done either way, so that also does not matter.

I wouldn't assume that the R mounts are better.
The IMS tank will be around 2.8 gallon/stock is 2.2. IMS has talked about making a 3+ of some sort once the bike is out and they have more time with it.
Most people getting an R are going to pay a "premium" based on what I'm seeing. Then you have to foot the bill for the starter-kit? Uh, no thanks. I'll be patient.
Don't you already have a bike for the 1st few races?

Personally, I'm expecting to have to re-spring it...that's about it. Add a Guts seat to keep my fat ass from sliding off the back. A nice exhaust system that I'll probably steal from ML or JCR...a few Ti & Carbon bits since that's my job...
Instant Ultimate Vet Bike...that'll be seen on Vital.

I'll know -EXACTLY- how different things are in a few days...and I'll report about it as soon as I'm allowed.

Here's the thing, Johnny Campbell was very involved in getting the RX right for his GNCC guys: that usually means more compliant suspension for guys like me. When it comes to 'chassis feel', that's where "Mr. 11 Times" (11 times Baja 1000 Champion) really, really knows his stuff. He DOES NOT like a chassis that 'beats you up'...so, there's always that.
