YZingers (PW50's) of the past.

So a week ago, I found out I'm going to be a father. Around the same time, I was also given a pw50 that needs a top end. When I started riding, my old man bought me a PW50 in '88. We didn't do a whole lot to mine, but I remember some of the really tricked out ones of that time and thinking they were the coolest things at the track. Now that I have one again, and have a kid on the way, I'm thinking about restoring this thing into a throwback racer of my time on 50's. Figure I can use it as pit transportation until the kid can ride it.
Do any of you guys have some pictures of the tricked out pw's from back in the day? Want to get some ideas for this project.
Thanks!

Appreciate that.
Too cool! Mine was a red and white one as well. '89 model. Got passed down to my younger brother, then my dad's buddies kid, then his next kid.

Enjoy and be thankful for your family every single day.... seems like I blinked and the little ripper on the CRF 50 is now 14 and turning laps on my brothers YZF 400 on Sunday just gone... scary....

Anyone else?
I'm wondering if I can use qt50 hubs, so I can lace spoked wheels. Would be cool to have a 12" front, and 10" rear.

That would be a cool mod, spoked wheels look much better.

Hopefully that thread may help a bit?. Also found another photo recently in a shoe box filled with those old mini photo viewers that they sold at Barona Oaks. Dig the Bad Bones sticker on my ugly Bieffe lid!! Laughing Cool

That's awesome! What fork were you using? Is that a qt50 driveshaft to get the extra length!?
That thing is killer!

I got my son's pw 50 a 60cc big bore kit off amazon for cheaper than a stock type end gasket kit! It has held up for 2 seasons with no issues, the o my thing I didn't use was the crappy spark plug that came with it, he's not super fast yet but the bike is pretty fast without the limiter on the throttle

Noticed today that the 2017's have oil dampened forks now. May see what it'd cost to get one.

I would make a phone call or email to the Reynard family. Robbie Reynard's 1986 World Mini GP PW50 was the most tricked out Yamaha PW50 ever, and Robbie's dad did most of the work himself.

I have been searching high and low for a pic of the Franken PW of Robbie's. I asked him a while ago about a pic and he laughed, you know, how Robbie always laughs as his answer. I think Robert would more likely know where to get a pic from. I guess there is always a chance is sister could see this. Main thing I remember is the absolute ear peircing volume that thing had. It was excruciating!

Awesome! Thanks for posting that.

Interesting he mentioned Guy Cooper. That year, two loads of us went to a race at an obscure location that Cooper put on that year. It was like an arenacross track. I rode up in the second vehicle (a Scout) with Robbies aunt, uncle and cousins. Those mod PWs liked momentum and didnt have much low end. But, of course, he railed it! Funny side note, he had an older cousin who had a KX125 racing that day. He came back after practice and said his front brake didnt work. After a little investigation, with the front brake, somebody noticed that the rotor had something that was sprayed on it. When his cousin was asked about it, he said he sprayed WD40 on the rotor because it had rust on it after a previous washing!

I never seen a rider dominate at the 50 level since. It wasnt the fact he won a bunch, but by how much. For instance, at Ponca, he would be making that left corner (first left you take in the start), before going under the walkover, and 2nd was just starting that long straight that preceeded that turn. That was a huge lead.
