I have this book and will scan anything you need. Most, if not all the pictures shows the 86 bike. Good luck with the rest of the build!

Finally I got crankshaft with a 50 mm stroke which is good enough shape to be rebuilt with new connecting rod and lower bearing. Best of all it was here in Finland and shipping didn't cost too much.

Got some more parts today for the project. New connecting rod, crank bearings, fork seals, clutch/throttle cable, chain and rear sprocket

I was bit disappointed with the rear sprocket because it turned out to be black steel sprocket which is not so good looking. I don't know yet if I'm going to use that sprocket

It's has been bit slow progress lately for this project but I got the all the mounting hardware zinc plated and first parts mounted back to the frame.

I'm not 100% happy how the zinc plating turned out but i's lot better than the starting point.

CDI unit and inition coil mounted back to the frame

Triple clamps cleaned and mounted

The crank you have looks like an 83 crank

Have you thought about having an RM rod pressed into the 86 crank ? You may be be able to use a YZ piston 56mm by doing this

I'm aware that the crank is -83 model. It has already new connecting rod and dimensions seem to be correct with the HRC cylinder so I think I'm going to use this one.

I also think older style crankshaft has better design because it hasn't got "tin" covers like the newer model crankshafts have.

Removed bearings from the cases today

I also cleaned airbox from years of accumulation of oily dirt and re-sealed airboot.

I have been busy riding my KTM and don't have much progress in this project for a while. I got a lot more for the bike and now I can carry on rebuilding the bike.

Engine lower end rebuilt with new bearings and seals

By the way does anyone know where to find front fork bushings for the bike? My bushings are pretty much gone I haven't been able to find new ones. I tried to place an order to Racetech for the bushings but I haven't heard anything from them.

Thanks Roadrider for the link. I need both bushings for both sides.

I got nice package from Evo-MX today

I haven't had much time to carry on building the bike lately but I have made some progress.

Carburetor is a complete mess filled with black spooge and has a weird choke knob. It's going to take a lot of elbow grease to make it work again

I got Wössner piston for the bike

Added some lubrication holes for the exhaust bridge

Lower piston ring ends comes out from the huge intake port that HRC cylinder has. Should remove the lower piston ring?

That ring is going to hit the port roof.
Is the cylinder all way down? Dont look so in picture, looks like a gap by the gasket left cylinder stud..
Take of the rings and tighten the base nuts little more then fingertight and measure squish hight.

Maby HRC cylinder is designed for single pistonring or taller piston? (squish will tell)
Or are you using longer stroke crank?

The situation is same when cylinder is all the way down. I just lifted it a bit to get better picture. I will check the squish next. Piston top seems to be flush with the cylinder so I think it will be alright.

Has anyone here tried running dual ring piston with only one ring?

That sucks. Is that ring end oriented in the stock location? Not sure if you could have the piston modified by a engine machinist or the piston manufacture to relocate the ring end pin for you. It would have to be done correctly so that the pin didn't "walk" out and destroy your cylinder wall. Even still, that seems like a pretty large area that the ring could try to expend out into a little on every single stroke. Not sure how it would work out long term. I guess you could try one ring, just making sure the ring end gap is/stays on the tighter end of the recommended range. Probably depends too, how much you intend to ride it.

I did lot of research on the internet and found out that my cylinder is quite similar what Honda's 85-86 RS125 and RS250 roadracers had. That has led me to believe that same single ring piston was used with this cylinder that was used in RS roadracing models. The bad thing is that original Honda HRC piston 13100-ND4-701 is not available anymore from anywhere. I've read in forums that some RS owners have used modified CR pistons on their bikes or piston from unknown Husqvarna model.

I guess my best option is to use the piston I have and leave lower piston ring out

That's a pretty interesting development. Although not available from Honda anymore, it might we worth looking into the aftermarket for the RS piston if it is really the same. If you're really lucky you might find an N.O.S. RS 125 piston, but doubtful. I would check with all of the bigger (and longer established) piston companies, Wiseco for example. You might get lucky, or they may be able to make you something. That HRC cylinder is a great find, it would be nice to take full advantage of it by getting the right piston for it.

I studied catalogs from Wiseco, Wössner, Vertex and Prox and they do not have this piston for sale. They have pistons only for newer RS models with 54 mm bore.

While I was searching on the web I found a Japanese page where they are selling slightly used RS125 pistons but that is all what I have found so far. https://goo.gl/4PSpNh

have you thought about a yz 125 piston 56mm with a Rm rod which will give you the right size wrist pin and work with the bottom end ?

Perhaps wossner could make you a batch of single ring cr 125 pistons you'd have to have at least 10 of them made up.

I looked up 86 Honda RS125 pistons, and didn't see too much, but saw something interesting. One of the kits mentioned that where the "enlarged power port" is, that it must be chamfered so the ring doesn't snag on the upstroke... Something to that effect. I'll see if I can post a screenshot in a minute here if I can find it again. Doesn't really seem like something Honda would do, but then again these weren't production parts made to last really long amounts of time... Maybe it can last a while like that, but guessing that they intended to get a little more power at the cost of ring life, being that only pros really had access to this stuff. Of course, they have the luxury of intensive maintenance and short service intervals.

I'd be tempted to try riding it with just the top ring, given that all of the tolerances are good (ring end gap and cylinder wall condition). I think the worst case scenario, as long as the top ring end falls on continuous cylinder wall, is slightly less power if you have a little leakage. I doubt that though, if you keep it fresh and tight.

It looks like I may have an option for the piston. It's a single ring big bore piston from -87 model CR125. Although the piston bearing is 1mm larger it uses the same 14mm piston pin according to Wössner web page. Both Wössner and Wiseco are offering this piston.

A guy I ride with gave me a 85 CR125 and my son and are going to restore for his vintage bike/project. It's all there but the crank is seized up. As soon as I finish my 80 RM125 we'll crack it open get started but this thread is a great inspiration in the meantime!
