Well me and the wife are getting ready to upgrade from our first home.

We're gonna be spending at the most 160k. Most in that price rangein our area are about 2000 square feet. 2 car garage. And about a 1/4 acre.

It always baffled me what other places housing markets are like. Throw me some examples of what everyone elses areas are like.

I have a friend that just bought a place in Santa Paula for $420,000 that is pretty close to that same size but without the big yard. If he moved back closer to the Ventura area he would be looking at $550,00 to $600,00 or more. The closer you get to the beach the more you will pay.

When I retire in a couple of years I would like to move up near my sister in Ontario Oregon. I could sell here and pay cash for a place there. I have lived in this area my whole life but can't afford to retire here.

Just moved back to Eastern Washington from the Seattle area. Seattle is stupid right now, couldn't buy steam for $160K, probably not even going down to Kent, Auburn, Puyallup, etc.

The house we have now is in more of a vacation type area, but there are a lot more "year rounders" than even a few years ago. 4BR, 5BA, about 3200 sq ft on 3 levels and a fairly small lot (8K ft?) for just over $400K.

It's about 15 minutes into Lake Chelan, 35 minutes into Wenatchee, so it's relatively rural. Includes community waterfront, park, pool, boat launches, and 3 marinas.

$160K right here might get you an older double wide in a community without those features, no garage, and dirt roads throughout. Maybe. Even that would be a stretch.

Ontario is only about 4.5 hours from me. Had to stay there for a couple weeks for work quite a few times. Not a bad place. We live in Idaho falls, Idaho.

Never really thought of a quarter acre as a big yard. I would love to find a place with a lot big enough I could build a 20x40 shop. But pretty much the only way you can do that is to either spend big money on a place. (about 250 or more) or buy a plot of land and build.

Buddy of mine bought a small property in a sketchy party of Denver near Coors Field about five years ago for about $250. Nothing special about the property, but it had a new age, trendy feel to it. After living in the place for three years, dude sold it for over $500k. DOUBLED.

The housing market in Colorado is booming. I seen no end in sight, but know that this type of growth wont come without a crash.

I live in Tauranga, NZ's fastest growing region, approx 2.5 hours drive from auckland, our biggest city, i moved here from auckland a couple of years ago,

I just brought a 2 bedroom attached unit, with a single garage for $410, 000 Kiwi , (approx $307, 000 US)

the market has gone mental here in the last 2 years, with average house prices going up 20-30% a year, god knows when it is going to stop, they have just brought in lending restrictions so you have to have 40% deposit to buy a second house to try and stop the speculation,

I still own a place in auckland that i brought in 2012 for $519,000; its worth approx $900K now,

I currently live in western Iowa (midway between Sioux City and Omaha) and 15 minutes or so off of I-29. In 2014, we bought a house built in 1941 with a finished basement for a total of 1700 square feet. The house sits on five acres with a 40 x 80 barn (one side has full power). It's on a gravel road and I can't see any of my neighbors. For all of the solitude and peace, we bought it for $108K. The only problem is the job market in the area. If you are not a farmer, you have to drive an hour in either direction. That is why I am contracting in Afghanistan.

The market around here is slowly coming back. I've noticed that most houses are just now at the values they were at before 2008. We bought a 3bed/2bath house in 2007 for $170k. It is an 1800sq ft post and beam style home on 3 acres lakefront (not deep water). We have done a good bit to it since we bought. Fixing to put it on the market for $225k. Job market is ok depending on your skill. Apple and Google have facilities 15 min away. Hickory is just across the bridge, and Asheville or Charlotte about an hour.

160k could go a long way in western NY. My buddy bought an old farm house on 90 wooded acres and a bass pond for 120k .

Go 100 miles north. Ontario Canada, pay $2,000,000.00 same type place. Real Estate out of control. Particularly Toronto, Vancouver. Sideways

I paid $150k for a small 3 br 1 bath in 2007. Will probably put it in the market next summer for about that. Been looking at houses a bit north of Ogden; 3+2, 2000ish Sq ft on .25-.50 acres for anywhere from $225k to $280k. Further north gets cheaper, South toward Salt Lake goes way up fast.

In my area in Long Beach, there is nothing less than 600k. These are generally 2 to 3 bed, 2 bath and around 1500 sq/ft. Lot sizes are basically 55 by 100 ft. Most of the houses here were built in the 20's, 30's and 40's. To get below 500k, you have to live where half the houses have steel bars on the windows. With good reason. It's nuts. Go to Zillow. You can see prices all over the country.

I'd be really surprised if any of these sell below listing price. Only reason I could imagine is if someone didn't want to carry their vacation home over the winter.

$400,000 in south western pa and West Virginia would buy you a shit ton of land and nice pad on it.

Bought my house 1720 sq feet on 1 acre for 121k. Appraised at 160 (maybe so I have to pay more taxes)

You can find some pretty nice houses in Southeast Texas for 160. 300 and up puts you in some really nice places and 500-1 mil can get off the charts nice. Of course property tax on a 5-8 thousand square foot house sucks around here.

Head to the beach here on the gulf coast and 300 will currently get you about 1600 square foot of new construction this far from the water.

Go to the front row by the water and 300 may still get you a vacant lot. Lots are fairly small so we bought the lot next to ours so no one else could build on the beach side of us.

Requires renting it out about 12 weeks a year to cover taxes, insurance and utilities. Beyond that any other rent goes towards maintenance or the note which fortunately only has five years left on what was a ten year equity loan on our house. Nothing too nice but nice enough for us. Need to get down here more often. Hung some new lights over the bar today.

Off season is best season. Not too crowded, weather still good and fishing gets better.

I just bought my first place 2 years ago in mid Michigan, the Bay City - Saginaw area.

1800 Sq foot home, 24x36 finished pole barn. All new windows, roof, furnace, central air system and ducts, new kitchen with stainless everything, came with new washer and dryer.

It's on an acre lot on a country club. I walk out nightly and play a few holes.

We paid $165,000. With a bathroom reno I just did, the 10 trees I cut down and dug out, the grade work and landscape work we did, and the shed refurbish we think it'll go for around $200,000 when we sell.

I bought my first place in March 2015 for $160k. It's a 1,387 sq.ft. town home (3br, 1.5 bath) on a .116 acre lot that's attached to just one other unit that is the same layout but flipped and less land. Zillow is showing me that it has appreciated to about $208k now. Not too shabby for only doing minor improvements.

The Northern Nevada area housing market has climbed thanks to all the businesses that have decided to open shop here (Tesla, Apple put an iCloud facility up here, and more). Reno/Sparks about an half-hour north of me has been the biggest jump, but it's starting to worry people that the prices are getting too high for many to afford.

Northern Wisconsin, about 200k will get you a house built in the last twenty years on 50 acres. It's a sellers market, but still reasonable prices.

I'm not speaking specifically to your situation, because it might be accurate, but generally be very careful about basing any housing decisions solely on information from zillow. Sometimes it can be pretty close, but sometimes it's so far off it's scary.

Wish we had Zillow in Canada. Canadian Real Estate Association have a cartel (all provinces). Want to control information. This is part reason, why high Canadian prices. Consumers being fleeced. Yet Government protects this unregulated industry.

Oh definitely. If the time came to sell then I would hire a reputable appraiser to let me know what the true value is of my place.
