Maybe someone from Europe, or just someone with a better multi-country understanding can help me with this question. Outside of Monaco and the Isle of Man, what countries don't collect income tax? And, do any GP riders live in those countries? Similar to how some US riders live in Florida for not only training purposes, but income tax purposes.

Like you said Florida or Washington state they don't have state income tax. You still pay federal taxes if you live there.

With Monico you pay zero taxes all together! So if you make $200k that's what goes into your bank!

I have a friend who, "lives" in Monico for this reason. His home country tax rate is 50%! So it cost him about $20k to become a Monico Citzen and renting a place is about $4k per month but it's still cheaper than paying taxes. Soooo crazy!

You can't become a Monaco resident by renting a place. You have to own. A 350sqft studio cost over a million bucks. When you're a Monaco resident, you don't pay taxes unless you're french. You can be Monaco resident but if you're a french citizen, you pay like you were living in France. As of contracts, I can believe top riders have similar bike contract both in GPs and US but the big difference it's with bonuses. They don't make $100k a win nor $1Mil a championship there and there's only 1 major championship in Europe. MXGP bonuses are close to 250 SX bonuses which aren't as high as 250 MX nor 450 SX & MX bonuses. Bubba or RV make more with their goggle contracts than any GP guy for gear. A Dungey or a RV winning that many races a season and 1 or 2 championship a year would make over twice as much as any GP guy.
interesting...

Couple mil before bonuses is what I've read.

But if you're not top five in the US and sustain a serious injury, you're in trouble. Health care costs in the US can be crazy.
I have a friend that went over to Glen Helen a few years ago to race. He crashed and sustained a serious/life threatening head injury that required urgent surgery. His bill would have bankrupted most riders under top ten. Luckily he's wealthy, and could pay outright.

Can't exactly remember where this was, but in the middle of last season or at the beggining of this season, there was something about Strijbos's paycheck. I belive it was 250k + all first class flight tickets.

A few years back yes....but there are fewer and fewer that do their countries nationals. For those guys to do their nationals its more like a local race because its typically within an hour from where they live...no travel time hardly at all.
And if you ask any US rider what the most difficult part of a 29 race schedule they will say the travel.

LMFAO at your post. Tanel Leok is doing GP`s and multiple National championships. In Estonia alone he`s doing both classes 250 and 450. That`s a lot of traveling he`s doing. He`s racing EVERY weekend for 8-9 month straight. Your post could be correct if you talk about riders doing Dutch or Belgian championship and their teams are based in Belgium, other than that I`m LMFAO.

I forgot to mention that Tanel often races one championship on Saturday and another on Sunday in a different country.

The whole Estonia is 220 x 150 miles, so at least there the races are pretty close.

Absolutely with you on this, I freaking hate SX. I watch only cause it's winter and only till the GPS start up. But mostly not at all

Because the average guy that does 18 rounds only loses $28,000.00 a year and the average guy who does 29 loses $63,000.00 a year Smile

True but someone like Herlings makes also nice money. At the Dutch Championship he makes 4000 euro (start money) add there 2800 win bonus at it and he makes 6800 euro for one day racing. At the Belgium championship he makes something around the 7000 euro at start money. Knowing he rode 6 Dutch Championship races, and he was planning to ride all Belgian Championship races. Then you know he makes some nice bucks to buy his mom something special. Because if you compare this to his KTM contract it is peanuts.

Riders like Strijbos, Guarneri (last year), Simpson,... are around 2500-3500 euro that is nice money if you aren't making the big bucks any more. The most of us need to work two months for that.

Bye the way people who say that AMA Riders are racing more. Wake up and smell the coffee. If Herlings didn't got injured he would've raced: 18 Grand Prix's + 6 Dutch Nationals + 5 Belgium Nationals + 1 MXON + 1 SMX. That is about 31 races if mine brain isn't screwing with me.

But is he contracted to race those events, or merely allowed to for "extra income"?

The discussion is about the main contract terms, really, and I'd bet that his contract doesn't require him to attend all of those events and hence he's probably not really compensated for them similarly.

I think it probably is accurate to point out that in many cases a GP rider will compete in more 'races' than US riders come the end of the year, but that fundamentally ignores the sheer attrition of Supercross as a discipline. It's not just the 17 rounds of racing, but also the testing and training for Supercross. That appears to be just as likely to land you a serious injury at any given moment as the races themselves.

You can't become a Monaco resident by renting a place. You have to own. A 350sqft studio cost over a million bucks. When you're a Monaco resident, you don't pay taxes unless you're french. I see some mention / argument about Tanel Leok here.

I think , right there, you've got one of the best examples of a Racer you could find.

He's been around for a long time.

He's ridden for Factory Teams.

He's 'privateer-ed' it a fair few times.

He's, I think, still making a reasonable living from racing.

For those that might have watched a few GPs, and noticed an unbranded KTM - well, that's Tanel. From what I can gather, he did not go to the Argentine, Mexican, and the 2 US rounds this year. One assumes, down to cost. Luongos "travel assistance", would barely cover a riders ticket - well, probably not even excess baggage. The unbranded KTM - that's fascinated me - he might just be to the point that if he gets no help, well, you'll get no exposure from me - fair enough. Mind you, it's attracted a Lot of attention - the unbranded KTM.

I noticed his name in the results from the last round of the British Championships. I've not kept up with it this year - like I didn't follow too hard US SX or Outdoors, it's just one of those years for me - with things compared to normal, so don't know of his Team affiliations in Britain. The Brit series has always been good for a few Euros ( and, indeed, Zac O, and before him , Mike Brown) in terms of rides. I think Leok may have a few deals, in a few series.

He seems to be quite the journeyman / jobbing Privateer. Making, what I hope is, a quite reasonable living, from racing - and doing so for a long, long time. I hope he puts in his usual good rides at the coming MXDN.

The Leok family is quite the MX / Dirt Bike Rider dynasty, over a few generations.

The 'Euros' have long since been masters of Sponsor acquisition, for decades now. So many Teams and Riders have gained sponsorship / funds from diverse, 'outside of industry' backers. And, still do. That's why you'd see (and still see) so many sponsorship logos on Bikes / Jerseys / other gear. I always found MXAs putting shit on the Euros for their under jersey body armour 'look', and the 'weird' names they'd see on Jerseys etc as just a perfect indication of how idiotic, insular and uninformed they could be. The Teams / Riders would have many sponsors, and getting money from them all. What was one of Eric Geboers main sponsors, for quite a while - an Ice Cream company - Oesburke (sp). ?

Most MX 'markets', could still learn a thing or two about gaining diverse, outside sponsorship, from the Euro riders and Teams.

Unfortunately, World wide, Energy drink sponsorship seems to be taking over. I often wonder if it is because the sport, as a whole, is selling itself for too little, to these massive companies?

As an aside - I noticed Steve Ramons' name in the results of the recent last round of the Belgian Nationals. Good to see - shows you can still race at a very high level, for many years, without being subject to Luongos dictatorship.

exactly.
also, let's not start comparing a dutch national with A1. in numbers they are both 1 race but certainly nowhere close in the effort, stress and money needed to compete.
