Subframe Bolt Hole Stripped

So the bolt hole where Justin's subframe bolts to his frame frame is stripped and we can't get a bolt to grab. We used a backing nut on the right side but the left side has the chain roller so we cannot have a backing nut there or it binds up.

What do y'all think is our best course of action for retapping the hole. I was thinking drilling it out a size then retapping both the frame and subframe might work, but I'm not sure I have a big enough tap.

I did a basic heli coil on my CR250 It has survived at least 10 subframe removals.

Or, try a button-head bolt from the inside out. You can put a nylock nut on the outside. If the bolt is short enough, the rider will never know it's there. The button head may give the chain roller enough clearance.

Sounds like you're on the right track, I'd drill it out 1 size and retap. Assuming there's enough material there?

Gonna try your idea first, never thought of doing that!

Next up is the helicoil, colintrax you and I were on the same page but I don't think there's enough room there to drill and retap both frames.

I had to do this on my zook. I took the sub frame off and welded in the hole then tapped and drilled it to proper size.

I like the threaded inserts better than the helicoil they are stronger E-Z Lok is a brand that makes kits they are spendy but if you just type in M10x1.0 threaded insert in google (or what ever the thread you need) you will find them from grainger, global supply, even ebay, and amazon. for a couple bucks, then all you need is the matching drill bit.

I just used one for the seat bolt threads on the subframe on my CRF worked great.

Time Serts work well. The link below is a great deal on the three mains sizes for a moto bike. If you search Ebay for "Kent Moore Thread", you can find sets that were made for GM dealerships at a fraction of the price of buying them one by one.

I will second that. Mine stripped a year ago and they are holding up great!

heli coil, it will be much stronger than the stock threads were and you can still use the stock bolt size.
