I wouldn't take that to the bank, I think most would have bet he would have the points already.

I want you to tell me why his number should be put on hold.
Or why it should be retired,

One undefeated season?
His personality?
What records does the guy have to get "special" treatment.

I want to hear them.

I stated 2, of which neither carry the weight of retiring or holding a number.

Some have said the undefeated season was borderline sandbagging.
If you saw him that year, you'd have to agree, he belonged in the big boy class with Ricky.
There was nobody even close to him in his final year on the 125.
But I digress, he did the deed, he deserves recognition for it.

But to retire or hold a number for that?

What on Earth did he do to be called Very Signifigant?

More titles than McGrath?
More Titles than RC?

Come on, I wanna hear it, I know what you're sidestepping around, I just want to hear you say it.

There is no reason to try and rationalize it. The Stewarts are the Nickleback of motocross. Eeevvvvvery sheep hates them, but no one can nail down exactly why. And when they attempt to state a reason, it always ends up being something petty, superficial, and something that 90% of the other riders have done at some point in their career.

The mob mentality of motocross is strong because the collective IQ is so low. And these people wonder why the riders and industry people are so private.
How the hell do you know what my iq tested to?

No solid fact or retort, resort to insults eh? Is that how you live your life?

My goal was to never join because there is far more hate here then there is respect or admiration for what all these guys do and I didn't want to risk joining the "herd" but after reading this thread here I am and I ask one simple question. I will then give what I really think the answer is but not necessarily what the majority will say. So here it goes...

If Villopoto or if you want, McGrath, said today that they were coming out of retirement to race in 2017 would you be accepting of them being able to run the 2?

My strong belief is a majority of those for Stewart losing the 7 would be more then supportive and probably would rally around the idea anyway they could to make sure they got to run the 2..

Oh and good afternoon Vital crew..

Agree, the old numbering system was better, but there are 2 MUCH more Dim-Witted ideas !!!

1. Allowing 4 strokes Double Displacement
Obviously the four-stroke motorcycle required an enormous handicap in order to be competitive with the lighter, faster, less costly, two-stroke motocross machines in the late 1990’s. It seems that this now outdated rule is now causing the less expensive, and more reliable, two stroke machines to become eliminated. Eliminating two-strokes was never the intent of the rule !!! I think it’s time the AMA and MX Sports work to adjust the AMA’s severely outdated “Double Displacement” rule.

2. Timed Practice:
It forces the riders to ride the fast line during practice, thus insuring a one-lined racetrack. They used to place hay bales on the insides, or in the good line during practice, to create more lines. Motocross is about racing, not just who can do ONE FAST LAP. Real racers would like to see a return to morning qualifiers for the AMA Outdoor Nationals with timing used to limit the entries to two qualifiers each for the 125cc and 250cc classes.

The word "hate" sure gets thrown around loosely in these threads. Some people don't think an exception should be made to the rule, big fuggin deal. The same overly-sensitive posters, feigning offense over differing perspectives on a throw away subject.

Perhaps he means Stewarts almost perfect season where he won every moto except one where his engine blew up. None the less, that is one huge facepalm for a guy who came in guns blazing, shitting on anything that moves and don`t.Woohoo Laughing Laughing Laughing

Hate is a strong word but just a strong dislike for Stewart among many other things seems to be the sentiment around here.

Onto the subject at hand, it's my belief that the number 2,4,7,14,22 etc are synonymous with guys like Villopoto, McGrath, Stewart, Windham, Reed and if they're available they should run them. To have Stewart on the line with say a 85 or 92 and a rookie in the 450 class, like Webb with the 7 is a total farce. This is the era of career numbers and James Stewart should be #7 until he retires. I understand the rules but.... Anyways I think if Webb or anyone else wants #7 they should be able to put in for it and have it issued to them as soon as Stewart retires but out of respect they should not run the number until that day. Stewart is after all a legend in this sport.

Would you be in favor of Villopoto being able to run #2 in 2017?

If you pay close attention you will come to the realization a lot of the "hate" thrown around isn't aimed at Stewart, it's aimed at his fanboys. Same with fanboys of Dungey, Villopoto, and others. Someone states a very mild opinion and the fanboys just can't handle themselves and start throwing around the word "hate". If your position regarding a given issue that pertains to their favorite rider differs in any way, you are a "hater". It's a simple way for simple minds to survive in a complex world with differing opinions.

As for the subject at hand, I'm really not invested one way or another. I get that riders want to build a brand around a number, and I get that the sanctioning body has to limit the amount of time a rider can hold on to a number. If they let Stewart keep 7, I get it and I'm fine with it. If they decide to strictly enforce the rules, I get it and I'm fine with it.

I've lurked here since sx.com dissolved and it is my opinion that in general yes the "hate" is directed more towards the fans rather then the riders but in the case of Stewart I find it is actually directed just as harshly towards Stewart himself. I briefly joined ThumperTalk but that place is the worst in terms of Stewart. There is genuine bitter disdain towards him and frankly it's quite disturbing and says quite a bit about there clientele. Am I a Stewart fan? 100%. Am I a Dungey Fan? 100%. I am fans of riders for different reasons and honestly come race day I could give two hoots who wins, I root for close racing and enjoy just watching the different skill sets attack the track in their own particular style.

Anyways good luck to Stewart and I hope he earns the 25pts and this becomes moot but if he doesn't I think it's blasphemy to have him on the line come A1 with any number other then 7.

Another backyard psychoanalyst.

No, I did just fine in High School. Got anything else?

And 298 is right, I thought he went undefeated on the 125, so what.

Like I said, he was/is a great rider.
So were a lot of other guys.

Construct a Shrine of him in Pinkerton Ohio if that gets you guys off.

Me. I'd like to see where they finished last year on their bike, always have, always will.

You don't agree, that's cool, you wanna throw insults like a little kid, right back at you, bro.

Hahaha holy shit it's like I'm talking to myself. Yeah lets have timed practices on a track that changes every lap..... makes perfect sense almost. But not quite, actually not at all, but no one cares. Well I care, or maybe I used to care, but now... I don't care either. Actually I do care but there's not much I can do besides bitch about it and that doesn't change anything, but I feel better. I think Reed should take the number 7 and get a monopoly on the my number is now my company bandwagon, or maybe start 227 Racing Inc.

I could see Dungey keeping #5 when he retires too...

I am torn between the right for legends to keep their number racing ....or they just get reallocated based on total points earned the previous season....I see and get the logic for both sides of the arguement

Martin and Dungey (last years winners) already has a career number. Technically if Webb wins it this year he could take it.

He was also given an exemption due to his suspension. Hence why he wouldn't get another exemption this year.

Either way, he will still be running the big number 7 next year.
