What's up guys? Recently at the last round of the spring series at Winchester speed park here in New England I had a bad get off and broke my tibia and fibula with a spiral communited fracture. They put a ti rod and 4 screws in. I also landed on my shoulder but it just felt bruised so I told them but it was over looked. Well yesterday was 4 weeks for follow up X-rays and everything is doing what it's supposed to. I mentioned my shoulder hurt really bad still and they xrayed it and sure enough it's fractured. They said as long as it stays where it is I won't need surgery so I have to be really careful. For my leg they just took me off non weight bearing and I can touch my foot down now. My question is has any of you had anything similar and how long did it take before you could ride again? I'm going stir crazy here because I was a very active person. Any stories!? Thanks guys and here's some pics.

Had the same exact break. Looked exactly like that. My bone popped out of the skin a little though. It took me about a full year before I was completely 100%. But I had a few minor set backs.

ouch....sorry to hear moto 3731 heal up fast. had a friend with same thing kinda, his foot is slightly off now kinda somewhat crooked, doc said you'll be ok just no skiing, He didn't moto but my guess is they the ortho guy would've said no to that. Did the doc know you did moto?..just wondering..If it would make any difference in the type of repair.

Yup! Shattered my tibial plateau and dislocated my shoulder in one fell swoop! 10 years later, in 2014, I did my lower tib/fib on the same leg. My right leg has 4 plates and 33 screws......and yes I still race REM at Glen Helen every chance I get!....Oh yeah and I had surgery on my shoulder: A SLAP dislocation requiring labral, supraspinatous and biceps tendons repairs. And I have a hill-sachs lesion causing crunching and grinding with certain motions of the shoulder. Ahhh motocross!

Dude, you look fine! Your fib's not weight bearing and shouldn't be an issue, and it looks like your tib was hi enough to not mess up the mortise (ankle) joint, although it is close. Sometimes when you mess up the mortise joint the docs have to screw the lower tib to the fib (a syndesmosis screw, which you don't have)......and you lose all kinds of motion.....not good. But for you....it looks like chill for 8 weeks and you'll be fine. Your shoulder is another story.

Damn, sorry to hear. I'm a Winchester regular this year but I must have missed your get off. What happened? All the best to you, brother. Heal up.

I did the Tibial Plateau and Tib/ Fib thing too. 13 screws and a plate all the way from my knee to my ankle. At least a year before it feels OK, realistically I was still improving for a year after that. Two thoughts. Ween yourself off of the pain meds as quickly as you can. Do the physio with full effort. I was not able to get full range of motion back but it's close.

Here's the rod that was in my right leg from the same break you have. keep it elevated and you'll be fine. took me about a year or so before I could run on it normally

Thanks for all the replies guys! Went to the doc yesterday and asked about riding again with the rod in and he assured me it's better to leave it in because it makes it much stinger and very hard to break. He said only take it out if it bothers me in any way. He's one of the best ortho docs around here. Any way got off the pain meds early so don't have to worry about all those probs. As far as the shoulder I hope it'll heal fine I just thought it was bruised but after a month they finally xrayed and confirmed a fracture. Anyone have any good hobbies or anything to do with yourself lol I sit in the garage and stare at my bike

It was the the double race day weekend sat and Sunday second to last race of the spring series. It rained all day and track was a mud pit. Over in the back section before the riverside tabletop where it's off camber coming in to the table top. Someone blew the middle of the berm out and my rear tire came out of the rut and threw me off. I knew it was broken right away! Lol

I had one similar in 2001 at red bud. spiral fracture. ti rod. also ankle, and knee had a lot of pain. "oh, it looks like you broke your ankle too" . I played ice hockey 4-6 weeks after surgery. and scored a hat trick. looking back it was pretty dumb, as i surely couldn't run, but had a really fun group that we played with. I was 29.. I certainly wouldn't have ridden for 3 months. My rod is still in! I had a buddy that walked on his the day after surgery, to go to the bathroom!

That's an easy place to go down but not a place I would think would give you the list of injuries you have. I figured you were going to tell me you OJ'd one of the extension tables or something. I guess it's just another reminder that it can happen anywhere. But generally speaking, I think Winchester is one of the safest tracks I've ever raced. 207 on the other hand......not so much hahaha. I do love 207 though but it definitely comes with a higher risk factor on race day.

Yeah I was actually going pretty fast the wheel kicked right before the table top and threw me into the lip. I hit it like a brick wall, and yes Winchester is safe it was just a freak thing and like I said it was a swamp. Last lap, last moto of the day too. I was in second and right on the guy in first trying to set up a pass in the last two corners then SLAM!

Just make sure you follow the docs instructions.....you don't want to end up having a prosthesis put in like I did.........

Ouch Guys! That hurts just looking at all this! Feel for you and these injuries and it certainly brings back yonder distant memories from my riding days, I used to do not a bad job at all, banging myself up on a fairly regular basis it seemed.

Back then though the medical tech was not like it is now, so hopefully you will be in good capable hands.

Never nice to see injuries though and hope you all heal up good and get riding again. Good luck with it all and remember not to try to push things too much in order to get back in the saddle too fast, you can easily sometimes re-disturb the problems by being overly hasty to get back quicker and then you end up setting yourself back further with other complications also possibly.

Had the same leg break in 09. Was off the bike for about 7 months. Don't really have any issues with the hardware or break other than the screw I can feel slowly backing out. No issues riding a motorcycle but it does feel funny when snowboarding or surfing. I also have some hardware in one of my femurs so I was kind of used to the whole ordeal when the tib/fib break came around. You will be back riding soon man, heal up

Thanks again everyone for the advice/stories. Today I started walking with one Krutch and can actually take a few steps without it but I'm not trying to push it. What a weird feeling trying to walk again knowing your legs severely broken. Going to the southwick nationals tmrw and hope there's a decent spot I can watch from/handicap spot.

3 months crutches and cast after surgery for steel rod. 1 year before moto for me. One thing I remember the doc saying. If it hurts that's your body telling you to stop, your over doing it.

3 months huh? I think I'm already ahead of schedual a bit because I can walk with 60 percent pressure, I feel pretty confident I should be able to walk good in another month. Although I'm not going to rush it, I was seriously hoping to get back on the bike in a few months.

Once you have no pain, full ankle motion, strength returned-------should be good to go. That all will likely take several more months.

Just be aware of stress-riser/raiser, when leaving hardware in.
