This is what I see happening a lot these days and for the life of me I just can't remember this type of stuff happening back a few decades ago..... Can anyone really imagine a Broc Glover or Bob Hannah becoming "trapped underneath" his bike and then having to PULL OUT of the moto ?

or am I not remembering well?
I actually saw something close happen to the Hurricane.

1978 Sears Point Trans AMA. 1st moto, 1st turn - Hannah cartwheels his bike and is briefly "trapped" underneath the bike. I think he got out from underneath the bike by himself, but either got hit by other bikes and/or ran over. He remounted and maybe did one lap and then pulled off and went home, not even lining up for the 2nd moto. I don't think he was hurt, but banged up from the crash. He had already clinched the title so it was no sweat.

He also received outside help, this would also DQ him would it not. Even for safety, his team picked his bike up

Bikes were slow back in the day! Correct!
Men were tough because machines were so impossible to ride with no suspension! That really , they weren't going anywhere and today's braking bumps are yesterday's jumps! Pre-1998 should be stricken from the records! Then dumb threads like this can be avoided! I learned to ride in the 80s! Raced in the 90s! 2000s? Is a different game! 80s & 90s was pussy shit compared to racing now? 70s (& 80s) were guinee-pig years and should not be talked about 'seriously' ever again! 90s bikes sucked! I got to ride them! I'm sad i peaked then! The tech is here now and I missed the boat ! But I still have a modren bike and I still rip so I feel like I can still partake in the current sport and have a small taste of what i missed! & yeah ! It's not the same sport! Two strokes was allot of smoke and mirrors , always fun to twist a throttle but in no way shape or form was motocross an athletic sport before 1998 (on a 2stroke)! It was pure hippies on two smokes! Crazies! Lance was a pioneer in 97 on the fourstroke but I say let the records start with Doug as the first champion in pro mx! Then those who made the change to fourstroke should be recognized and those who didn't should be forgotten! There should be a special section 'like the dumbgeon' for threads like this! Call it the 'burned out hippie section' and anytime someone brings up racing a 2stroke? Let's move the thread so that 'hobbies' & 'sports' don't end up in the same conversation again.

It was not a personal attack towards you in anyway, stop trying to play the victim.

But, sorry for your loss

yea, I was also thinking about what had actually happened under the bike, leg folded back and stuck in the wheel, burned by the pipe, etc, and I was really feeling for the guy, then later saw him up and comments was that he seemed ok, that's what brought about this post.
But still, it does appear lots of riders these days just brake off a clutch lever or whatever and then just pull out whereas that sort of stuff just did not happen in the 70's, The riders literally just jumped back up after a crash and hopped on the bike and took off as fast as they could, whereas nowadays most just casually get up and then sit and SLOWLY click the bike back into neutral and start the kicking ritual for about two minutes.

Some however do jump back into action fast, lets see who for example... Dungey, Tomac, Roczen, to name a few, but there are lots on down the list who just surprise me at their lack of interest in trying to finish out a moto as high as they can....

Any comments from guys who actually witnessed the 70's ?
I don't remember Hannah (or anyone) crashing, breaking a clutch lever, then getting back on and hitting the 'Fly 150' with out a clutch.

Baggett ,broke his collarbone , and still finished . But i do agree with the OP , there are some riders who pull in alot ,when anything goes wrong . Then you have other rider s , who do impossible thing s, just to finish . How do you even ride with a broken collarbone !!
Same as it ever was.

On a side note, I tried to trail ride with my kids one time three days after breaking my collar bone in a mountain bike accident. It was not the acute pain, but the strange disconnected feeling I had in the bars that made me stop. Like at any moment I could lose grip on the bars and crash. I really don't understand how Blake could finish like that. Andrenaline I guess.

When I read posts like the initial one, I usually cringe because of the perceived karma to the poster. It was in poor taste, but I don't see how anyone could possibly be offended by that. We have all been directly affected by cancer. Not a person on this board could possibly have escaped having someone they know affected by that disease.

With what we know about concussions/CTE, I'd rather a rider pull off if they ring their bell during a crash than trying to hero it and hurt themselves further or someone else too.

How many times have you fallen and it hurt like hell for 5 minutes and you dont know how hurt you actually are but in the end you didnt do any lasting damage. I've done this plenty of times. If a guy is gonna miss 5 minutes of a race and be shaken up I dont have a problem with them erring on the side of caution and pulling out of the moto.

Yeah, I was standing in that corner when that went down. That was a step down that went behind the starting gate directly before the big uphill triple. Guys had to carry a lot of speed in that section to clear the triple. That crash was even more brutal than the video suggests, and although Im a child of the 70's and agree that overall we were tougher than todays kids, lol, I will also say that some of todays guys are every bit as tough as shown by Rickys and James "best of" crashes. some nasty shit those guys rebounded from

20 yrs ago the fast, elite riders were few, they could get up 40th and make it back.

Today, the guys in 20 to 40 are just a tic slower than the elite,it aint gonna happen like 85.

That is easy to say from your easy chair! I have had crashes that did not look bad at all and was injured bad and had some that people that seen it could not believe I walked away at all let alone un injured.
