Yea, Borders has been a friend of ours since the day we met him when this picture was taken in 1970 (I think I posted this on her somewhere before). He's #41 and my brother is "G".

I am lucky to have raced for years against alot of these OLD guys....like Borders, Carsten, J Ward, John Reinholt.

Don't recognize anyone else (Besides J Borders)...that flier is about 4 years before I went semi-pro. (like todays "Lite" class)

Jon-Boy actually came out of retirement and ran a local arenacross this weekend in Cullman. He's still got talent oozing from his pores but he's out of shape. Man that kid can fly when he wants to.

Bobby Ellis still races sometimes locally. His grandchildren race and I have raced against his daughter (she's in her 30's now) a few times.

This is my first post here - it's great to see this. The picture of Johnny Borders and Winn Peeple's brother - what memories! I was there. I raced against Johnny Borders many times between 1970 and '72 at the old tracks like the Orlando Sports Stadium, Ocala (the one near the town of Sparr), Action Park and probably at the old track in Callahan and probably at the old Gumbo Speedway in Leesburg. This picture looks like it was at the old Dragon Drive-In in High Springs. For those who were not there, in those days Johnny Borders could thrash all of us on our Super Rats and Greenstreaks on that underpowered SL100. My dad was always furious about it since we had 5-6 horsepower on him. Borders was so fast and so smooth. Watching him drop into the ditch in front of the stands at Orlando was something to see - he had great bike control. The only guy i ever saw who could stay with him on a small bike was an older guy from over in Daytona who drove a bulldozer and rode a Husqvarna 125. That bike was also underpowered - but it didn't matter. Mr Peeples - do you remember that guy? I also remember Bobby Ellis and his little brother Pat. They were excellent riders too. Bobby was the picture of style on his 250 CZ. Pat did not have his brothers style but he was incredibly fast on a smooth track like Gumbo or Barberville. There was another guy who was blazing fast in the early days - Dorsey Fields from Leesburg. He rode one of those old Pursangs with all the bodywork, painted purple and had his name on the tank in old english letters. At Orlando in 1970 and '71, he was totally invincible in the 250s. Dan Farley, John Joyner, Billy Labrie, the Lundy brothers, Lynn Bowden - lots of fast guys in Florida back then! And of course Don Kudalski - nobody ever rode any harder than Rokon Don. I ran into Don at a bike shop in Oakland Park years later - retired from racing but as intense as ever.

Two really memorable international races from those days: '71 in Newnan GA - Brad L on the peace dove CZ, and the Suzuki trio who destroyed the BSA team. Then Sylvain Geboers at the international race in Orlando in '72. He was the fastest rider ever on the sand.

Mr Peeples - what was your brother's first name? What number did he carry later on? I rode a Greenstreak #17, then later on it was a Penton 125 #8 and a 250CR Husky also #8 I think. Those were great days. And I look forward to reading more stories here.

I was in Pensacola at that time. Not sure I knew anyone who actually raced. Lived across from a popular local riding place by the Airport.

Yes, that picture above was taken at the old Dragon Drive-In in High Springs. :D

His name is Grant Peeples, mine is Winn Peeples. We're from Tallahassee. Raced from '69 to '75. My son Jordan raced from '91 to '05. He was much better than we ever dreamed of being but, my brother and I damn sure had fun...

My brother always rode with a "G" on his number plate - never had a number. He rode Bultaco's always. I rode Yamaha Mini's with a "W" - switched to 24x a little later. When I moved up to 100's I switched to "11". I knew all the folks you mentioned. Some (including Dan Farley) are in the Picture below. Remember Frankie Johnson from St. Pete? The Carter brothers (Phil, Joe, Floyd, and Chris) from Tallahassee? Jerry Williams from Jacksonville (DJKC's Dad)??

If you're really old school then you'll remember the name Al Settles Jr, a hippie factory Bultaco rider from West Palm Beach, and Mike Maw, an Ossa rider from somewhere around Cocoa I think. I could go on and on and on and on and...

Does anyone remember Daryl Grubbs from Jax.? He raced with the Lundys and Greg Sowell, and Jerry Williams. My older cousin raced during that time too. His name was Tom Webb. He took me with him to many races around fl/ga. I once saw Jerry Williams give Gary Baliey a fit in Valdosta, when GB was there doing a MX school. Back in those days many of the riders wore these homemade vest the same color as their bike with no shirts. Man I had fun taggin' aolng! Larry

Larry, I remember all them very well. Daryl is living in Jax still and is in still touch w/ my brother Grant. My son Jordan used to race against John Lundy (Dickie Lundy's younger brother) son Zack, and I used to see the Lundy's often up through '04. Jerry Williams died of cancer 3 years ago.

My brother and I both were in Valdosta with the Bailey's during the school you are talking about, and the next day too when Jerry Williams AND Johnny Borders gave Bailey a fit!!

Man, this post is bringing back memories I thought my brain had deleted. Anyone remember Tony Adair (CZ), Mike Giddens (Ossa), Bill Alread (Puch), Mike Laroque (Husky), Albert Petross (Husky), Franky Johnson (Yamaha), Jeff Hope (Honda) or any of the others that raced at the Orlando Sports Stadium and Bithlo.

Winn,
Thanks for the info! At one point later in my life I ran a trailer repair facility where Beaver St. runs into the St. Johns and John Lundy did alot of truck tire work for me. I didn't know him when he was racing as a kid but I sure enjoyed getting to know him as a man. He worked hard and always was a class guy. My cousin, Tom Webb was good buddies with a guy name Tom Bell who owned a Bultaco shop for a while in Jax. I rode alot once I got old enough and raced a couple of Hare Scrambles at Palm Valley. I am getting interested again (because of cable) in watching and I am thinking about going to the supercross race in Jax next weekend. Glad to meet you through the interent. I am sure I watched you race many times in days past. Best to You!
