I think this is way to important to only be in the thread about Dave.................concussions are beyond serious and with the recent issue for James everyone needs to pay massive attention to all of these new findings the last few years......big ups to Andrew Short for staying home

I've had many.....and I mean many concussions over the years from riding and I'll admit that something has definitely changed with me.

Do you see it in yourself or do others see it?

Both, I get frustrated everyday because of things related to it.

Last I counted my concussions end at 10....

Be interesting to see what happens over the next 30 years....

There's a lot more substance in this article than a lot of people will know, especially those that arn't suffering any sort of issue to undersand

If someone has a serotonin problem I imagine brain injuries could cause further depression etc etc.

People that are into sports like BMX, MX, etc......are already risk taking personality types to begin with.....I've always had impulse problems and thrill seeking issues that have gotten me in trouble throughout life. Now that I have a history of head injuries......those impulsive issues and bad decision making can get me into dark places where I can totally see myself or someone like me doing regrettable things that seemed like good ideas at one time. It's impossible to explain what it's like.......it does suck though.

Have you spoken to a neurologist yet?

I've had CT scans, MRI's, X-rays, spinal taps, therapy, counseling......all that stuff. Yeah, I've seen a neurologist.....I do have an upcoming appointment with another specialist in a few weeks. There really isn't any answers or "fixes" yet.....a lot of the doctors I've seen are somewhat learning about this as they see their patients. The whole "head injury" treatment is still so new to a lot of them, they will admit that too when you see them. They are honest about it and will tell you that it's going to be a hard battle.

Damn bro, stay on top of that. I worry a little about it also, as with most of us adrenaline junkies I've had a few concussions myself.

I'm glad you're continuing to seek medical advice.

It sucks because you really do get discouraged from time to time......you see no progress from all the doctor appointments and symptoms only seem to get worse. I can honestly see people in these situations off themselves not from depression.....but because you're just soooo tired of living this way.....it can get really old so you might think the better choice is to just make it go away forever.

....and this will sound really shitty, but others might take that route just out of sheer boredom. Nothing in life stimulates you anymore so you decide you're done and it's time to move on.

That sounds very rough Torco, just remember that medical advances are happening all the time and big improvements could be right around the corner. The thing about the rout that Mirra took is what it does to the people he left behind, it is completely unfair to them. Hopefully soon we can talk about how medical advances have improved the lives of people suffering with this condition.

I've been reading a bit about this lately and I'm starting to wonder about myself. Had lots of street bmx head-knocks(no helmet...ever) and many moto-munches that left me not knowing who or where I was for a period. This all started about thirty years ago and up to about twenty years ago not including the first one I'm positive I had at about 9(bmx).
Recovery back then consisted of beer and/or whiskey.
Have problems with depression and anxiety and things that were never a problem 20 years ago. Makes me wonder...

Been committed. Been tested. Tried pills. Been in therapy. It's tough when your chemistry changes with the wind. Major highs, super lows. Can't put your finger on what's wrong. Only age has made me self aware.

And I can pinpoint it to about a year after a very violent concussion. At least I think I can. Maybe not though. I could just be searching for an answer.

I've hit my head way too many times over the years between MX and BMX, and one time on my GSXR that was so bad that every time I turned my head I felt like I was going to puke and pass out, for a week.

I constantly deal with short term memory loss, and I've forgotten a ton of stuff from the last 30 yrs (I'm 42). I have the best health insurance that exists, and have seen some of the best neurologists in L.A., and there is nothing that can be done except go in for scans every year to measure the progression.

Head injuries are no joke whatsoever.

I lost a longtime friend this past year to suicide. Last person I would have EVER thought would hurt themselves. Dude had it all, and had a permanent smile on his face since we were kids.

Bad car crash nearly a year before where he was out cold for a long time(until medics arrived) and lucky to walk away.

You will NEVER convince me that what he did wasn't somehow the result of that crash.

Regardless of the issue NEVER be too ashamed or too tuff to seek help. Glad some of you guys are attempting to get things sorted out. Even though this forum suffers from daily bouts of fanboy retardation, it seems like there are a LOT of good people on here that would be glad to help or just listen.

Good to know it's just not me then, if I can call it good. Was only out cold once for a few minutes that I can recall, but that put me in ICU for 2 weeks with frontal lobal bleeding, broken eye orbit, cheek bone and base of skull. It took me that long to realise what had happened and understand the the gravity of the situation, then they moved me to neurology ward for another 2 weeks. Then I was allowed to go home but went to rehab 5 days a week for 6 months. I was on blood thinners the whole time to stop the blood clotting with blood taken every day for monitoring while in hospital and had to take the thinners for a further 6 month. I don't remember those first two weeks or the people who came to visit including friends I told that I was in a hotel in Bosnia cause that war was on the news a lot at that time, or asking my flatmate where his room was so I could borrow his shoes and go out to dinner with them cause they had hidden mine and my clothes. My friend drove home after racing 3 hours and then back to the hospital again another 3 hours cause he thought that may be the last time he saw me, slept in his car and stayed till I stabilised. He only told me that last year and I never knew it from 22 years ago.
Had a heap of other knocks from skateboarding on the street from very young (I did so many times I remember that i used to get this taste in my mouth after hitting my head hard) BMX and moto. Threw away a few helmets. I now see stars nearly every time I sneeze, just like in the cartoons. Can't be good.
My symptoms are the same as you other guys, but I've always thought of myself lucky cause I can still walk, talk and wipe my own ass. It's just getting harder to cope with and I can't keep at a job for long. I'm 44 in a week or so.
This whole thing is bringing tears to my eyes

Reading your stories here makes me think of my experience with head injury. Had about 12-15 concussions with 2 being knocked out for a day. First when I was 6 and last 2 years ago at the age of 23. After every concussion, it was easier to suffer another one. Even from a small tip over. Basically, every time I hit my head I was out. Never attended any therapy or went to see a doctor apart from the 2 big ones. After many knock outs I resumed the day and raced. It's no fun when you don't remember where the track is going. After some time, about 13-14 years old, I started realizing that my decision making on the track is far from being calculated and knowing what I was doing. Off the track was good until I went to college when I found out how bad my short memory is. Long story short, at the age of 25 I've got emotion swings, memory, and huge focus problems. It's in fact not getting better at all, rather opposite. One thing is for sure though, what someone's already mentioned here, I'm always tempted to seek adrenalin activities. Some of my friends and family think I'm unbalanced and irresponsible for doing such and such things. Guys, if you ever do suffer concussion, go to see a doctor, a neurologist, obey his advices and take your time off. This is a serious problem.

Thanks, good read. There is a lot more going on with concussions than the doctors I've seen lead on. You really have to look out for yourself because nobody else is going to. Torco you should get in contact with this guy's doctor, I know this sounds unconventional but Joe Rogan has some very smart doctors on his podcast from time to time that have great success treating brain trauma and ptsd patients with alternative medicine.

find a certified Craniosacral therapist. My wife is certified and I've witnessed the benefits first hand with cancer patients, concussions, migraines, etc.

The biggest problem in Action Sports (MX/SX, Skateboarding, Surfing, BMX, Snowboarding etc. ) when dealing with concussions is OURSELVES, PARENTS, TEAM MANAGERS/COACHES and CONTRACTS.

Ourselves: For the most part Actions Sports are self driven, self motivated, self controlled. Its partially why we are attracted to these sports. Its us and us only vs. the conditions, the machine, the competition. If I can strap in, kick start, drop in I am fine. If I can handle the pain, deal with the numbness, push through "adversity" I have a chance to succeed. Sometimes we are our own worst enemy.

Parents: "He/she looks fine", "I know my kid", "Let me sign the waiver", "I didn't invest all this time and money for you to sit him out", "I have had multiple concussions its no big deal", "Its not a concussion its a DING", "Who makes these rules, I am a lawyer I will see you in court, I will make you pay for this".

Team Managers/ Coaches: "Can he still test on Tuesday", "I know a chiropractor who can have him going in two days" "We sent him to OUR doctors and he is fine".

Contracts: If an athlete/rider misses X amount of events/races PAY gets CUT, contract can be TERMINATED, athlete/rider GETS PAID only if they COMPETE.

Just some observations from my many years of being involved in Action Sports. In MX/SX management, awareness and education has improved but we still have a ways to go. Mostly when an injury occurs outside of racing, ie. practice track, overseas races.
