Hopefully this will be the last year we have to go thru these threads about him....and he moves up....Agree no sandbagging in PRO class IF the PRO class has no advancement rules. 250 nationals, no sandbagging, 250 SX could be considered sandbagging when someone like Davolos "gets hurt" at the end of the year so he can't race and point out...250 GP sandbagging when you have domination of a class that your biggest competitors get moved or move themselves out of

Remember that this is MXGP and not AMA. There's not that much difference in skill level between the 450 and 250 class here as there is in the USA.

I do however, find it bullshit that they removed the rule that said: "if you win 2 titles you will have to move up"...
Are you serious? There is a bigger jump. We don't have a 23 and up rule.

More than 20 of the top MX1 riders are all either been forced or voluntarily moved up from MX2 in the past few years. The FIM/Youthstream has stated the whole purpose of this is to make MX1 more competitive. To push riders up to fill the gate. They even discussed removing it as a world title. MX2 is as depleted of absolute top riders as it ever has in history.

Only the Herlings trolls post absolute crap like this to defend the sandbagging.

Beat me to it
There is no sand bagging in or at PRO level
No ? Tell that to these guys..

What is this, his 6th season in MX2? He's going to be 22 this year, is he really going to milk a full 7 seasons out of MX2 just because he can? Febrev moved up in 3 seasons, although the age rule affected him. I don't think anyone is down playing Herlings talent, I think everyone is just tired of seeing him win year after year when there's a whole other championship that he can go after. Ken Roczen is the same age as him, in his 3rd season on a 450 and has an AMA national championship already. RV's entire pro career was 10 seasons, 9 not including the MXGP.

I think that having the proper momentum when entering the 450 class is one of the most overlooked aspects of success. He's had pretty serious run of injuries. I have no doubt that he's the best gp rider and top 3 in the world when he's at his best but I think he needs a full season badly here.

I don't defend his sandbagging and have rather move him up. But riders stay pretty long in the MX2 class over. There aren't really that much riders that move up on their own, so most move up when they reach the age of 23 which means they are all in the class for some time. That means that the skill level is pretty high. A lot of people here even wanted the 23 age rule gone so people could've stayed even longer.

In the AMA series, riders move up way quicker as you can point out of the series and more riders move up on their own. That's why I said the difference in skill between the 450 and 250 class in the AMA series is higher than the difference in skill between the MX1 and MX2 class in mxgp.

For those in doubt: this is his last year in MX2.
He said in a TV-interview right now he has some regret that he isn't in MXGP already given his current form. He didn't expect to be 100% healthy by now and because of that he figured he wouldn't be ready for a good debut season in MXGP.
First moto Qatar JH was clearly controlling the race. Once he tried to overtake it took him about 3 turns.

Well, you've got to hand it to the guy, he's a beast. No fan of his, but his statistics are fenomenal and unreal at that age. Cairoli is the second best after Everts for now, but if someone could sweep their names of the records, it's him.

We've been to Qatar 4 times now, and he only lost one moto. As in MXGP, we've got 4 different winners on 4 different brands.

2013: Desalle, Suzuki
2014: Paulin, Kawasaki
2015: Nagl, Husqvarna
2016: Gajser, Honda

I hope for him he can claim his 50th GP win for his home crowd in Valkenswaard. I don't know if it bothers him that much where and when he wins his 50th, as long as it is asap.

Stats are a bit misleading though, when there's the 23 year old rule, and, more importantly, there are 50% more races in a season than back in the day.

Yep, and he was winning up to 3 GPs in a day.

Incredible rider and amazing feat, but in terms of total GP wins it skews any comparison with previous riders who only had the opportunity to win 12 GPs in a year.

48 GP wins, 17 GP's left to win. So he could have 65 GP wins, that'd be something. He is going to pass the 101 Everts record at 26?

Anways, he'll move up next year, a year too early, but he will. And if he doesn't it'll be a year later. Eventually he will have to go up like all the other former MX2 riders. And no, he's not moving to the United States.

That happens when your competition either moves up voluntarily or gets forced up with the under-23 rule. But due to a rule change and glitch in the Youthstream MX2 system you get to be the greatest sandbagger in GP history..

Herlings looks worse the more he dominates MX2 while Fevre, Gasjer, Coldenhof, etc win after moving up to the premier MX1.

It's a spotlight on his sandbagging.
Those are valid points. Do you think it is KTM wanting him to stay there or himself?

I wonder how much talent above 23 year old was in MX2/125cc back when the rule didn't exist...

Anyway, imo it's a stupid rule. A guy like Covington has a factory ride in MX2 and guys like Todd Waters and Dean Ferris are back to Australia because they can't get a ride in MXGP and are to old for MX2.

Well, Alessio Chiodi became 125cc-champion in 1997, 1998 and 1999. He was born in 1973, so when he won his first title he was 24 years old.

Everybody can talk shit about herlings but nowadays he is not even on his level before he broke his femur. Back then( halfway 2014)he was on almost every track 2 to 3 seconds faster then the rest of the field including Febvre, Gajser and Coldenhoff etc....without the big injuries he probably would have raced in mxgp already after 3 world titles. Unfinished business.....and unreal what he's been through. Dislocated shoulder, broken femur, broken collar bone, finger ripped open, dislocated/broken hip. And then back at this level...and a lot of people disrespect...
