Being 53 and staying at a 155 HR is pretty damn good man. Nothing to be ashamed of at all. That's about 93% MHR , which 100% is about 167.

I just got home from work here and am doing some research on the concept 2 rower and I am going to try and pick one up here within a few weeks. My space is limited , but from looking at the dimensions , it should fit about perfect. As others have mentioned in this thread , is is basically a torture device , and that exactly what I need. I've been hitting my cardio pretty hard over the past few weeks and should be back on the bike some time in March , and hopefully I'll come in strong and prepared. I haven't been pushing my MHR up past about 85 - 90% as of yet because it's still pretty uncomfortable , but hopefully be up into your range here within a month or so.

I'm planning on doing something a little different this year , and that's split my cardio into a moto simulation type thing. Instead of a long 45min workout , I'm thinking of doing two intense 20 + min sets , with about 15 min break in the middle. I am 48yrs old and have a resting HR at 50 even right now. It'll probably go lower as I get into the more intense workout sessions over time. I'd like to be able to push myself into the 90-95% MHR for a good 20-25mins strait , and that's my goal for now.
Jeffro, how did you determine your 167 max hr? Actual test or theoretical? If actual, what activity? Example, my max is 190 running, 184 cycling, 180 xc skiing. More muscle recruitment creates more lactate at lower heart rate. Slightly different training zones for different activities. Also I see the concept 2 rower has a watts reading. If you can learn to use power zones in addition to heart rate, there is information to be gained there. Mainly you can see over training or illness coming on.

Hey Guys, I have not been on in a while but if you ever have moto related questions about the Concept2 feel free to hit me up by email. GregH@Concept2.com. Concept2 has been around for 40 years so there are several different Models of the rower out there and now up to PM5 monitors. everyone is slightly different but all work the whole body and can be used both for HIIT / CrossFit style or straight up endurance base work. You can make Polar Heart rate chest belts work with the PM2, PM3 and PM4 monitors and any ANT+ chest belts will pair with PM4’s. The new PM5 monitors come on all new machines and they all Bluetooth as well at ANT technology built in so they work with most all HR chest belts (Polar, Garmin are the best). I don’t want to sound like a sales guy so if you have specific questions just hit me up.

Hi Greg, thanks for your help! like I said in my earlier post, I love the Concept 2 Rower and it has helped me a lot but I'm sure I am not using it to its full advantage. Can you direct us towards some information that are moto related workouts? Can you share what guys like Andrew Short are doing for there preparation? I'm sure most of us cannot run at his intensity level, but it might give us some guidelines to maximize our workouts. Thanks again!

Most of the Moto trainers I know would kill me if I gave away what they do for training with their riders but I do have a good program that a lot of privateers use. Any good 5000 meter rowing training program will work great. It teaches the body to go hard for that 18 min to 25 minute max effort time domain. It is in a word doc so I think you will have to email me for it. It is a 3 day a week interval based program for the rower so it will not get in the way of your on bike training. If you are not riding then you should add 2 days of functional strength in there as well to help make you more durable. - Greg
Its worth a try! Thanks for the info, I'll e-mail you for the word doc.

Concept Rowers are pretty darn popular amongst the moto crowd.

There's a bit of info out there on how they work as a great training tool for motocross riders.

http://www.racerxvt.com/pages/concept2-rower

This Racer X Virtual Trainer page has a list of workouts for riders.

Any reviews on these bad boys for moto guys? Row machine is the last piece of arsenal I've planned for my home gym haha

Arm pump is caused by having one or more of the following issues:

Lack of cardio vascular conditioning (a blood flow/oxygen issue)
Lack of actual riding/seat time
Lack of technique (including grip/breathing/posture, etc) and/or improper suspension setup
Lack of muscular strength in the legs/core/back/shoulders (strength, not size and notice forearms weren't listed)

Mine arrives tomorrow... Dun dun dunnnn... I used one at a local gym for a few years as a warm up or a replacement for the treadmill when I didn't feel like running. This will be the first go-around using it with a bit more of a plan in place.

Enjoyed reading this thread! Some good info and products listed on here.

I don't own one of these but I tested one out briefly and it seemed like a good product.

I don't suffer arm pump as such, however I often suffer from a weak grip due to RSI from using a keyboard/mouse all week at work (my desk is set up properly with mouse and keyboard rests etc). If I've been at the desk a lot during the week I definitely feel weaker on the bike grip wise, sometimes losing my hold on the bars in the gnarly stuff... very sketchy!
I'm thinking this could be a great product to try?

I know the rower kind of took over the arm pump discussion. That was not the intension. To be clear I am not saying the Rower is a cure for arm pump. I just know that when you are in better shape (Cardio and strength) you tend to ride and feel better. The reason so many riders like the rower is it builds both cardio and strength without adding a lot of bodyweight. It is also a great time saver when compared to road cycling. With that said it is not just for pros. It is also great for keeping chub of Vet riders as well. Hope this helps.

You will love having your own rower! From a time standpoint, it gave me the flexibility to work out when I wanted (or could). Enjoy!

Russ - I have had a couple therapists that use the Armaid tell me the 4Arm Strong is a much better device. You may be interested to know that Aldon Baker uses the 4Arm Strong with his riders for the grip strength benefit as none of them suffer from arm pump. Here is a 60 second commercial with Aldon that we are going to be running on Fox Sports 1 during Supercross.

Personally my grip strength increased from 100lbs to 140lbs in just one week using the 4Arm Strong. Ricky Johnson and Matt Goerke both use it for the increased grip strength benefit. Both lost a good part of their grip strength after wrist surgery limited their ROM. 4Arm Strong increased both their grip strength quite a bit.

Using 4Arm Strong will definitely help you at work as well.

If you are interested you can either use promo50 for a $50 discount or I can ship it to the UK for no extra shipping charge. I have shipped 4Arm Strong all over the world (2 to England) and the shipping typically cost $60.

I have the rower and it's awesome. I also added the ski erg to break up the workout. I do 5000m workouts almost daily on each machine with a 10-15min rest in between. I always start with the Ski Erg. My goal is to be sub 20min on each machine. I am hovering around the upper 20min30sec on the ski erg and almost down to 20mins on the rower. I can average 2:04 500m for a moderate/vigorous workout but dipping down to the 2min 500m avg gets real challenging on the Ski Erg. I am pretty sure I could do sub 20min on the rower but until I get close with the Ski Erg I am not going to blow myself out. If I just do the rower alone I can do a 19:30 5000m. These things are brutal.

Anyway, here is my setup.

Pay no attention to the saran wrap. My wife is convinced my sweat is damaging the computer but Greg assured me they have tested it extensively and there are no problems. I've learned to not fight her over nonsense like this. This is the Ski Erg. I've had it since last year. Computer was defective and just recently replaced. That is why there are only a few workouts on it. Have to say that Greg at Concept 2 exhibited customer service above and beyond anything I imagined. Sent out a new one right away with no questions asked. Great company that stands behind their product.

This is the rower.

It has been my experience and observation that forearm pump is primarily psychological, mental; not 100% anatomy.

I have met a couple of pro's that have had surgery to fix a physical problem, but that after years of success with no arm-pump issues.

Snake oil or not, if it helps the riders in the SX circus, I am all for it. I love watching them do what they do.

Sorry about that. When I offered that discount the price was $190. Three days ago we eliminated all discount codes and lowered the price to $159.

Keeping things cool eliminates the arm pump as well. Anybody ever get a set of these through FMF? Can't remember if they ever actually distributed them or not but I had a set of red ones with the FMF logo on them. Not many people bring a freezer to the track.
