Pulled into the pits, put on my safety vest, walked into the tunnel, and pretty much went anywhere I wanted.
I was never questioned by anyone.

The press pass that the guy had was counterfeit...and Feld confirmed that today. I'm pretty confident he used it for A1 because you can see where he blacked out the 1 from two weeks ago.

Crazy too... where they found this jackass is probably the most affluent area in Sydney if not Australia... Goes to show it doesn't matter what the case is there are dodgy fucks everywhere!
Just that the guy was 47 years old & tall and going through a divorce.
He used a fake pass as stated above in other posts.
I believe he was arrested in Ventura near one of his homes.
This same thing happened at Unadilla four years ago and Ben Lamay's bike and Willy Browning's bikes were stolen out of the pits the night before the race. No security or police saw anyone leave the pits with a motorcycle, but what had happened instead was that someone who came with another rider and had a mechanic's pass went and found to bikes to steal, loaded them up in his van (which was inside the pits) and then waited until morning to leave. We had no idea and were baffled by the disappearance, and ended up going down a lot of wrong paths looking the bikes. Just like what happened in Oakland, social media kicked in, someone spotted two race bikes in someone's garage over in Connecticut, and we got the bikes back through a top from a Racer X reader.
I am not sure what Feld or the AMA (or any promoter) can do when someone shows up at a massive event with a brazen plan and then (almost) pulls it off. I spoke on the phone with Todd Jendro as well as Jeff Canfield about the whole saga and they both were going through credentialing trying to figure out how this happened and who it might be, while also trying to manage the load out of the event, only to find out it was a forged pass and the man had apparently scoped this all out two weeks ago.
And this happens everywhere. I have got a guy who tried to steal a Cobra at Loretta's, and we didn't catch the POS thieves who took five bikes that were left out at the Ironman GNCC last October, and one of them was Kailub Russell's ISDE bike. We never got them back, and we're still looking.
Reading all of these barbs thrown their way, what you might see as a result is an event stricter credentialing process, less access to the pits and tunnel, more security checks at entrance and access points, and just a longer time to get anywhere at the races. Michael got extremely lucky that Brandon Biro spotted the bike going down the highway and noticed something odd. Had it not happened, I pretty sure Feld would have made sure Michael had a new bike to compete on this Saturday night in Oakland. No matter, I'm pretty sure more stringent security plans are being drawn up now, and the rest of us (both the scum bug thief going to jail) are going to pay a small price in our time and access so that this doesn't happen again, just like going through an airport...
Ultimately, bikes are expensive, thieves are desperate, and it will almost certainly happen again, only some other sneaky way, and we will all be looking again, trying to help. Thank goodness for social media and a close moto family that always wants to help others when it's their turn for a bad deal like this.

For everyone saying the AMA or Feld doesn't care in my experience with them that is very far from the truth.
Either way, the goal was to get the bike back and that's what happened. I have heard that Feld would have made it right and bought me a bike or something so that was cool to hear.
lesson learned, don't leave your bike alone.
