Cost savings is the main push for air on production bikes not performance.
Edit: here's the excerpt from racer head:
Speaking of Millsaps, he was pretty good at A1 and flew under the radar with an eighth. As mentioned, Davi is using the air shock on his bike, but with spring forks. That's an odd combination for sure from what we've seen, and he's hoping to get a set of WP air forks on there as soon as he can to be on an all-air system like Andrew Short uses. The hold-up is how incredibly rare the air forks are, as there are just six sets in existence.
I was present for a couple of them doing comparison tests when they swapped over, such as Star Racing.
Geico Honda had a full stock of Showa A-Kit (spring sets), but purchased a large batch of KYB PSF1 forks and shocks before 2015 of their own accord, because of rider feedback.
Pit Row
It's also quicker/easier to change the spring rate.
On the flip side, air doesn't react to heat as well as springs.. and some people claim there's less feeling in air forks. BS imo
Want to pick your brain about some details and options, gonna give you a call a little later to help me make some choices.
