Was wondering with all the talk about air forks these days are there still any factory riders that use spring or oil forks

Dungey and JA21 are not. Most of the others are.

Production 48mm forks, especially the 2010 Honda CRF250R ones, are pretty damn close to A-Kit.

the KTM guys are going to be upset too, as the FE comes with air forks so therefore the 2017 KTMs will have them.... only a matter of time before Yamaha follow suit

I noticed on the technical touch site that you have the option of aoss cartridge or psf1. What's the difference between sss or aoss?

Yamaha's going spring because it works better...

Cost savings is the main push for air on production bikes not performance.

Interesting. Any difference between US spec and EU spec?

I read last week that Davi was running the air shock but not the fork yet? Is that still the case? The article said he was going to be moving to the air forks but didn't have any yet and there were only six in existence. Btw, I'm pretty sure it was in racer head, but I'll double check.

Edit: here's the excerpt from racer head:

Speaking of Millsaps, he was pretty good at A1 and flew under the radar with an eighth. As mentioned, Davi is using the air shock on his bike, but with spring forks. That's an odd combination for sure from what we've seen, and he's hoping to get a set of WP air forks on there as soon as he can to be on an all-air system like Andrew Short uses. The hold-up is how incredibly rare the air forks are, as there are just six sets in existence.

So you're saying. . . . he's waiting on parts to arrive again. . . That's some bad luck. Lol.

Yamaha will change once another production fork is "better" than the SSS.

Do all the riders have a choice of what to run? Springs or Air?...

The teams all purchase their componentry, so yes they have a choice.

I was present for a couple of them doing comparison tests when they swapped over, such as Star Racing.

Geico Honda had a full stock of Showa A-Kit (spring sets), but purchased a large batch of KYB PSF1 forks and shocks before 2015 of their own accord, because of rider feedback.

Well... SSS is actually just a marketing slogan Yamaha uses, the only true SSS fork is the 05 YZ forks. Everything after that, is actually called AOSS internally at KYB. So all your spring KYB spring forks on the YZ, YZF, CRF, and KXF (when the CRF and KXF had them) are AOSS forks.

If it's cost, then why are most of the factory teams on air when cost is no factor?

There's a performance benefit to air, less partially sprung weight.
It's also quicker/easier to change the spring rate.
On the flip side, air doesn't react to heat as well as springs.. and some people claim there's less feeling in air forks. BS imo

Heads up.... Was just on the phone with Craig from Enzo earlier and also talked with Joey at JGR, Looking to pull the trigger on a KYB kit for my soon to be 2016 YZ450.

Want to pick your brain about some details and options, gonna give you a call a little later to help me make some choices.
