He should be a cabbage farmer.

He's got a mental block. Totally different guy race conditions.

Perhaps he is the anti-Canard. Trey does not change his speed if he is 4" from someone...or alone on the track. CP has not raced SX in a long time, and he does not seem to want to go full speed close to other riders. With the injuries he has suffered, and the time away from SX...I would give him a pass and wait to see him get more comfortable and confident around other riders.

Ouch.
Maybe even worse than last week. Really racing backwards...

yeah.
When he was racing East Coast lites and winning he did it with an easy style that he rides with. He has the speed, and the endurance is not as big a deal as outdoors.
Not going to count him out, but DAMN it's going to be a dog fight every week!!
Yeah. I'll give him the first half the season before getting too critical.

It's been a LONG time since he's raced SX right? Im inclined to let him ease his way into this.

And as deep as this field is, staying upright is going to go a long way. Nothing wrong with making a late run in the season.

After watching him race in person, he was racing a decent pace despite being terrified to get into it with anyone. I don't really think he deserves criticism because he'll improve.

He rides like he is on a menstrual cycle....knows what he is doing, but if things get the slightest bit touchy.....,he gets bitchy then backs off with an excuse.....

He basically rode the same way he did outdoors for the last two seasons. Great start and hang on to dear life...

Agreed.

I think you guys are selling his outdoor season last year short. Sure he doesn't like battling guys but i thought he was solid. He's riding now like he did in 2014

Has there ever been a bigger one lap wonder than the guy?

He has a hell of a lot of titles for a "one lap wonder" mate.

Yeah five years ago.

Those injuries he suffered sure have turned him into a shell of his former self.

Love watching the dude ride though.

Wow, this place is pretty harsh. No room for a longer term strategy or some allowance for the fact the guy hasn't raced supercross for years. A rookie with his speed is sensational, but in his case it's woeful somehow.
It's CP. move on.

It's just frustrating to be a fan of him. Getting high hopes when you look at the qualifying results and hyped up to see him getting a good start only to see him fade back outside the top 10, when he clearly has the speed to run top 3. It just sucks to see one of your favorite riders not fight for their position.

The comments here drive me insane sometimes. How you can criticise him is beyond me.

He's a former World and super cross champion. He hasn't raced SX for some time and he is taking his time to get things figured out. The dude was paralysed for Christ sake, let him figure things out his own way.

looks to me like he's easing his way back into it- he's not raced an ama supercross for 5 years, never raced a 450 supercross. Yet sets the fastest lap first race in, then battling with the likes of canard/ tomac etc.

I see plenty of positives- wouldn't surprise me at all if in a few races time when he is fully comfortable, he gets the holeshot and wins a race.

People bang on about how talented james stewart is- for me, pourcel is the most naturally gifted rider out there. So smooth and effortless style. He looks great in the whoops too. I think he will figure it out sooner rather than later and we will see him on the box a few times this year.

One thing to consider, is that there are 12 guys out there that can win this year! crazy stacked class. Did you hear the commentators say musquin put in the fastest lap? whilst running 11th?! Both Frenchman are good enough to win and will get podiums this year

He took too long to pass Friese during those first few laps of the main. He kept following him into corners and got held up on numerous occasions while other riders barged their way past them both.

I thought Pourcel did well in San Diego. It's been a long long time since he's had to race with the intensity that you do in SX, and even then he wasn't in the 450 class. He got himself good starts and in each race he was there in the battle, and looking more racey. If I'm Pourcel or his team, I'm thinking there's a few good positives to take from last night

I think the time off has killed his mojo more than anything! He came back from the worst injury in Europe to win two regional SX titles and nearly two in MX titles over in America!

Ever since then it has been flaky with teams and time off. But he seems settled now and almost happy in a Pourcel type way with Rockstar Husky, and hopefully as the season goes on he keeps building.

He told it will take 5-6 races. He didnt want to make any contact with other riders and wants to get laps in. Nothing worse than come in season and watch races from TV. His bike looks more lazy than Anderson so maybe his speed is there when line is free but Anderson can cut inside of others but looses rear coming out so tight.

“My practice was good, as usual,” said Pourcel. “I had speed. It proves I can run in front. I got a good start and learned a lot. I followed the top guys, but got passed a lot. They were a little more aggressive that I was, but I just have to be patient and keep pushing. I can learn a lot this year, which is great for me. The speed is there, but it’s been five years since I raced supercross. I just need to race a little more with the rest of the guys and get more aggressive."

In the Heat race he was in perfect position to let a few go by, but it was not that crowded that he could not have fought to qualify.
I love watching him race. Classic Euro Style. But at this point, I am worried for him. Never take anything away from his past accomplishments, and the injuries...can't imagine the mental toughness and balls.

Hope his strategy works, hope he is making a good living riding. Pourcel qualified 2nd in San Diego. That's fuggin cool enough.

I thought he did show some fight last night, maybe not enough, but SX is intense, and he hasn't raced it for 5 years. It'll take time

Yeah, didn't he pass Reed right back on lap 1?

I think we all expected a little too much, too soon. 5 years and no 450 SX experience is a lot. You don't just turn a switch on. The good news is the speed and skill is clearly there. He just has to get comfortable with the intensity and bar-banging. He'll get tired of being passed and start to fight for position the entire race soon.

Don't know anything about his training program but I assume he is in shape.

In defense of his approach ... at least he has the sense to not ride over his head and take himself out of the hunt.
