Gasoline can boil between 100f - 400f,... Unshielded tanks on bikes running too hot/lean? Long-live the air-cooled bikes that never had those issues, Hah!

What you need is a decent sized metal spoon that is somewhat pliable, a penny or something made of copper, a cotton ball, a little lime juice and of course a clean rig. Then you'll......ooops, sorry......wrong thread......

Not sure if this is a serious thread. But I think you need to go down deeper to a molecular level and look at what happens to the hydrogen and carbon under heat and pressure. Regular gas is C8H18 and has a high boiling point due to the bonds. Don't know about race gas. I've only come across this term a handful of times, Dungey and Metcalfe comes to mind but not sure if that is what actually happened.

Serious enough, seriously. I don't need a chemical engineer to explain it to me because I wouldn't understand it anyway. Just a real basic explanation of how it happens in a motocross bike.

Heat newmann,....HEAT!!!!! It's literally that simple!!! Think about how hot a modified bike runs, and then it will make sense without some pot of fuel over a burner experiment. I doubt that there has been a boiling fuel incident on a cold day, but if anyone doesn't think that a modded engine on a hot day cant raise the temps enough in a plastic or metal fuel tank, then they need to think back to when Yamaha introduced the Yz400f's, and advised tech-line reps to tell freaked out shops to advise their freaked out customers to "ride faster", and that the header pipe glows because the bike was made for racing, not idling, LOL! It's also why the teams run heat shield material on the underside of their tanks.

What does it mean? It's when heat cause molecular separation. Last summer I stopped to check my gas and when I opened the cap, the fuel was dancing as if I were still riding.

Hillbilly is correct, it's mostly the alcohol in pump gas. Oxygenated race gas has a lower boiling point than standard race gas.

Lots of places here sale straight gas for about a dime more a gallon.

Well worth it.

It's more of a concern at higher altitudes.

In Colorado we would run heat deflection tape on the tank as an added precaution.

Also, cold fuel is supposed to burn better.

When you think of "boiling" often you associate to water.

But more accurately put its the conversion of any liquid into a gas... Water into steam..
Gasoline into vapor.

Some of the "components" of gasoline have very low evaporation temperatures... Or "boiling" temp.

Acetone for example is a liquid but if you leave it out un sealed it will evaporate or "boil"

All gasolines are made up of a wide range of hydrocarbons... Race gas is not much different.. Just more aptly choosen ones.

The really high dollar race fuels have a selection of "components" that evaporate at low temperatures relatively speaking. Around 100 degrees and many begin to boil. On a four stroke... In outdoors, this is very low temp and the underside of the tanks sees much above this.

On a hot summer day on a four stroke... Pour in some mr pro6 and after 15-20 minutes stop the bike in the pits turn off and pull the gas cap, put your ear near it. You will hear the unmistakable sound of bubbles as if you had a pot of water on the stove.

As the fuel converts to vapor... It leaves the tank and contributes Fuel loss.

On modern efi bikes... When the pump is working... There are no vapor issues in the fuel line. Fuel boils at a higher temperAture at higher pressures (and why at altitude it boils more easily- less pressure)

Well worth it.
It is pure garbage, we have to run way more pump than we need to in the automotive world because of that. E85 in a can is fairly cheap though.

Closer to 173....but you start seeing some clear coming through the filter in the low 160's......
