Gun related homicides peaked in the '80s and '90s and has since declined, not due to citizens owning more guns or having concealed weapons permits, but due to the decline of gang related activity and a change in the drug market away from crack/cocaine which also peaked in the '80s and '90s.
Your argument here is a bit misdirected here as well. When media outlets use the term "epidemic" they are referencing our gun related homicide rates compared to other developed countries in which ours is much higher.
Stricter punishment for violent gun crimes seem to pretty far down the list for some though. Instead, the shooter not only gets his fifteen minutes of fame he gets 24/7 coverage for weeks on end. Inspires the next loon. Needs more bullet riddled body being drug through the street being pissed on before being set ablaze.

The CC holder wasn't in a position to help- "he was in lock down in another room".
And does this guy know tactical procedure? how do the cops know he's a "good guy" when they show up?
If he kills someone trying to "help" does the Good Sam law cover him?
I am not anti-gun. As I said I grew up in those woods and have hunted and shot guns my whole life.
We will always have guns, but I believe that large mag handguns and assault rifles need to be regulated much tighter.
I do agree that we need detectors and armed guards at schools and the like.
Take away guns and they will find other ways. You cant stop it by simply disarming the responsible people
In one of his first acts as leader, Prime Minister John Howard announced major reforms to Australia's gun control laws just 12 days after 35 people died at the hands of a lone gunman wielding a military-style semi-automatic rifle at a popular tourist spot in Tasmania on April 28, 1996.
In the wave of public revulsion against what became known as the Port Arthur massacre, the move for stricter gun controls was led by Howard, who had taken office just seven weeks earlier.
He took his anti-gun campaign around the country, at one stage addressing a hostile pro-gun rally wearing a bullet-proof vest. He also oversaw a successful gun "buy-back" scheme that took some 650,000 guns out of circulation.
High-caliber rifles and shotguns were banned, licensing was tightened and remaining firearms were registered to uniform national standards -- an accomplishment regarded by many in the country as Howard's enduring legacy.
Australia has been compared to the United States for its "frontier mentality." But unlike the U.S., there is no constitutional right to bear arms and gun ownership is markedly lower.
In the years after the Port Arthur massacre, the risk of dying by gunshot in Australia fell by more than 50% -- and stayed there. A 2012 study by Andrew Leigh of Australian National University and Christine Neill of Wilfrid Laurier University also found the buyback led to a drop in firearm suicide rates of almost 80% in the following decade.
The only difference between a fist fight, a murder, and a standoff is the number of guns involved.
On another note about all this taking away our liberties talk:
Just got my first AR-15 today. Man this thing is a nice feeling, fun, sporty rifle. I enjoyed them in the military, and now I can at the range. Stocked up on ammo too.
The guy at the sportsman's store was saying that it's been crazy for AR's since Thursday night, some people buying multiple at the same time.
Pit Row
Good luck.
How the causation of these horrors always boils down to just a gun debate is beyond me. The origin is multi-factorial; with mental health and the media "glorification" of these shooters (which is exactly what they want, and we give it to them) likely being the biggest culprits. Our perception as a society of mental health issues is archaic (and that's putting it mildly).
That said, guns do make it easier to kill more people in these scenarios. Do you really think this guy could have killed as many people if he went into that school with a katana, crossbow, or kitchen knife? He also obtained the firearms legally. To say that the easy access to weapons for the mentally ill isn't part of the problem is a total cop-out. Don't be a mouthpiece for the NRA, as they are just a lobbying body for gun manufacturers to keep their money flowing and flowing well (thus they do not always have the people's best interests in mind). For the record, I have no problem with law-abiding and mentally-sound citizens owning firearms. However, establishing the latter part is the problem as of now. There is a such thing as common-sense gun control, but we can't even get that conversation started because people will either sweep this factor of the problem under the rug entirely or only support completely unrealistic gun bans (i.e. total bans) in the United States.
Cause I keep hearing that guns don't kill people. People kill people. Can't have the argument both ways. Only the lefty anti gunners can do that.
The Oregon incident was the 994th in US in three years!!!!! That's fucking ridiculous considering you're supposed to be a civilised nation.
These atrocities are outrageous and senseless, but they are far from common. You are just as likely to hit the lottery as being shot by a deranged psychopath looking to make the national news.

Edit - 294 was the total number of incidents where a multiple number of people were killed OR wounded, so I should rephrase what I wrote to 'mass shootings' rather than mass murders. But that doesn't make them any less serious IMO.
