Just this morning I was speaking to my wife about GoFundMe and what is real vs a scam. While I realize that there are those who may use unfortunate situations to take advantage of others I think it was "In Poor Taste" to attack this guy. Let's assume this is for real and imagine how bad he felt (over this tragedy) before reading these attacks/negative posts. Some of you show more compassion for a stolen bike than you did for a guy that almost lost his mother. Let's assume this was a scam; so don't contribute, but don't kick a man when he is down! If you don't have something nice to say don't say anything! We know that the accident is REAL and imagine how that woman will feel when she hears that her tragedy spawned so much negativity!

I did spend a few minutes looking into this and came to the conclusion that gift tax is an issue for the donor, not the person receiving the gift. Also, the gift tax is used to keep wealthy people from avoiding estate tax, by gifting everything away before they die, as you stated. They can gift up to 14k per person/year without consequence, but anything over that amount will be subject to a tax on the donor. Does this sound correct? It's not an issue for the person receiving the gift, as far as I can decipher.

Thanks for the compliment man! The struggle is real but making slow progress. Last week I was finally able to make full revolutions on the seated elliptical. They were slow and rough, but it's progress. Back to the doc next week for more X-rays to see if anything is blocking the range of motion or if it's just scar tissue. And to hopefully get the go ahead to start transitioning to weight bearing and life on two legs again!

I think I am in the minority here, but I agree with you. I most definitely would have figured out what insurance was going to cover (especially at age 66) before I did a lot of things the OP did first. Setting up a gofundme should not be your first reaction to a tragedy. These days............... (you get my point).

There are a lot of bills that will happen long before any insurance money will ever be seen. In addition
there are expenses that will come up that will never be reimbursed. Never used Go Fund Me but when you see
all the other people getting help for "please fund my vacation" it seems logical to tap into some help there for
what really is a tragedy. If you don't want to help, don't.
Not speaking from the "moral high ground" just the misfortune of experience.
