No American is going over to GP after they saw how hard RV had to ride for third and fourth place finishes . Yanks don't want none of that ...
Good rider, not GP material.
It would be good if he comes but it would be for a second or third tier team and I don't know if he would be in the top ten much unless there are a lot of injuries of course. Teams like 24MX, HM Plant KTM, STR KTM, Phlippearts team etc would be decent rides for Phil to get some results.
Villopoto was a pretty good measuring stick for the level of the World Championship - it's extremely high. Phil is not on the factory level imo for World Championship racing. More a top 10-20 level rider.
The best guy to try and win a World title for USA would probably be Dungey, he's smooth and smart. But he is tied up for another two years. Half of the current American factory riders in the USA wouldn't get factory rides in MXGP.
I would say only Tomac, Dungey Canard maybe Barcia would get a factory in the World Championship right now. And none of them are likely to come any time soon, although Barcia did say he would like to race MXGP at some point in his career.
Pit Row
And yes- 4 races isn't a fair measuring stick at all!
The point is there is a lot more guys that can win races in MXGP (than AMA) and who were just as good as Villopoto - that was proven. No need to take offence to facts. RV just wasn't any better than the very top guys in MXGP ( but he was one of the top guys) You guys somehow just can't accept that but it's the truth.
Phil is not on RV's level or the rest of the factory MXGP guys (most of whom can podium or win a race on their day)
As a consequence, any US rider who isn't on championship level like an RV/ Dungey/Tomac is going to struggle more to get a factory ride, and then they have to adapt to the depth of competition and the diversity of tracks in the world championship, which even RV struggled with more than many expected.
That's why if Phil was to get a ride it would be a tier 2 or 3 team. The factory riders will fill the top ten and beyond to start with, which makes it pretty hard for Phil to break in there and maybe even the top 15 at times.
He's had decent results at home though and rode well in Germany so I'm sure a team would see some potential there for results and a value in signing him. But MXGP is a different ball game to him racing in the USA, so it would be slightly risky too compared to signing someone who already has some GP experience.
Pretty big assumption. I never said that it should be used as a measuring stick either way . I know some have but I wasn't among them . Nice try though.
Champions do come from obscure places, you never know when a rider will click with a series.
