sesker, wouldn't it just have spark at the wrong time in which case you would still see spark if you ground the plug and spin the crank?

Drained the rads, successfully removed the ignition coil, and the readings that I am getting are not good.
Primary ignition coil resistance is 0 still, as it was before I removed it, when the manual says between .24 and .36 ohms. This tells me that the ignition coil is, indeed, hooped. I was also getting a reading of 15 while on the ohms x1k setting on my multimeter, which is what the manual suggested.

We pulled the magneto today, no visible damage to the stator but obviously cannot be sure only from visual examination. Last step is gonna be to try out this cheapy ignition coil trick and see if I can eliminate that from the potential issues. Next will be to try replacing the stator (grr hiss).

That's why she said we're going to pop in a cheap universal ignition coil first. If that doesn't work, then the stator.

Bronwyn, wring out the wiring harness. I still think it's some thing you guys did. I had coils tested that were questionable , but none of them were bad. Pull the bike with a car or truck,and get moving, and then throw down and see what happens. The speed can help pick up a bad stator, and make it start. When I say wring out the wiring, I mean unplug it all and make a resistance check of all the wires, and wiggle them while you do it. I worked at IBM for years and found many broken wires inside the insulation, that showed no sign of a problem. It'll take you ten minutes. Rethink what you did. I think that's where your problem lies. I've had 18 Yamahas, never an electrical problem. Got an 06 125 that won the 250 class. No key in that stator. It's how you slip it to change the timing. It worked until you did stuff to it for the carb issue. Recheck what you did.

I really like what you're saying, and I will try once again to pull it apart and check every connection, but I don't know what could have possibly happened in that single minute between us letting it die because it wouldn't idle, and the next kick to start it up. Because it did start up after the carb was rebuilt.

I was thinking that might be the case. I had a jetski once that ran perfect till the stator went bad. But here's the icing, it was only bad over a certain temp.

Alright figured it out today thanks to Gary at Gran Prix Cycles in Albany. It was the spark plug cap! Cost me $8 in parts plus some for the time Gary spent with me going over my electrical. Money well spent for his expertise, I feel smarter for time spent in his presence haha. I am one happy camper!

Tested it by pulling the cap off and taking the connection off of the top of the plug while it was screwed in, then putting the wire straight to the spark plug without the cap. Started up second kick.

Funny story. I was the one that ripped it up and down the street last time when the plug cap magically quit. So today she does a moto or two then I ask if I can take it out and see how it's running and give it a good pacing at 9k. Then I thought nah, better not, I'll feel so bad if I break it again. But she insistis, so I go take it for a rip and come back and it's smoking out the muffler for a solid 5 minutes. About 20 minutes later, she gets her gear on to go out, and it won't start. I immediately feel like a complete piece of shit thinking I break everything I touch. She says she's gonna sell it. Turns out she forgot to tighten the hex nut on the idle screw and it had turned all the way out. Whew, disaster averted, great fucking day on dirtbikes.

Baby got a bath and I plastidipped a few plastic pieces. We'll see how they hold up, if the answer is "Not very well" then I am going to dye them when I dye my gas tank. Found a good thread on TT that explains how to dye your gas tank cheaply, as I don't really fancy spending $300 on a black gas tank just for aesthetic purposes.

I will update this as I build this bike up more. There are lots of upgrades that I am going to do, and I have a graphics kit to apply aswell. First day on her was a dream, I could not be happier.

Bike is very clean looks like she just came off the showroom Woohoo Glad to see you finally figured out the problem and stuck with it. Sometimes it seems like everything that can go wrong does go wrong. When I rebuilt my YZ's motor somehow the kickstarter spring popped off. I was pretty pissed off when I first fired up the bike and found out.

I wanted to dye my YZ's rear fender red to look exactly like the bike I was replicating. Never got around to it I chickened out.

Yeah it's unreal. There are a few imperfections on the aluminum components but I am going to get on the googler today and see if I can figure it out. The old WD40 and 0000 Steel Wool trick ain't doin' it. I am just so relieved that the bike starts first or second kick and runs like a dream.

I am going to start a thread on here about my dyeing experience, just going to try some small parts tonight such as the rear brake line brackets and stuff. I plastidipped the rotor guard and chair guard and stuff, but now I am regretting it because of the success I have seen in people dying their plastics parts.

Pretty sure that bike is a 2006, not a 2005. Either that or someone put the newer 2006 SSS Forks and newer shock with 18mm shaft and Titanium spring on it.

It's funny because Justin was saying how well the bike handled, and that the '05 was supposed to have had a less impressive suspension than the '06, but that it was cornering like a dream. Makes a lot more sense now...

IKR... everytime I go on craigslist and find a 2007 model, it ends up being a 1997 or some shit and end up wasting an hour of my time arguing with the seller about it.

FGR1 how did you tell the 05 suspension from the 06+? Besides looking at the frame VIN. I certainly don't want to get swindled on CL.

J and Bron......Keep that fucking bike , no matter what! You'll get the little issues worked out , but the base that you have there is a great little machine! Damn that thing is one clean looking bike. If you were to say you bought it brand new , you wouldn't be able to tell from the pics. Trust me Bron , Justin knows what he's talking about. Get used to that thing and you will be in moto heaven!

It doesn't look like anything is running for practice this weekend , so fuck me! I might as well work through the weekend I guess. Working 55-60hr weeks and still falling behind.

BUT....got an 06' when you thought it was an 05'?.....Hells yeah! That shit doesn't happen very often haha! I seen one a few weeks back where a guy was selling an 06' RM250 for $3300.00....the damn thing was like a 96'-99'. Felt like calling him just so he could hear my voice as I called him a dumbass. I have a 2006 YZ125 and YZ250 and I can tell the suspension immediately just by looking at it. The first give away is the shape of the lower end of the fork tubes and the double white plastic protector bands. Do a google image search for 2005 and 2006 and look at the difference.

On the shock, the 18mm shaft is easy to spot compared to the 16mm on the 2005 and all other brands of bikes, basically. And the titanium spring has a certain look to it compared to a steel spring. I think there are less winds of the coil and more space between each one.

There are more specific ways to tell and there is some pretty detailed info in the Yamaha 2-stroke forum on Thumpertalk. For example, the 2006 shock has a blue HS-comp adjuster nut and Brown Fork caps that have a different look.

There have been guys on TT that bought 2006 and newer bikes and verified the VIN before they bought them and then realized the seller had kept the newer suspension and put older junk on!
