There isn't much more annoying than ignorant people resistant to change. STFU if you are not riding the track or have a vested interest in someone who is. I don't hear riders complaining, in fact I'd bet that most of them enjoy these jumps. How many people got hurt from the FLY 150 or laroccos leap in past years.

His grip came off, get over it. Could've happened on more than a few spots on the track with same consequences.

There's a lot of riders that are completely comfortable jumping big jumps. What might look big and scary to some of you will look f-ing awesome to others. That's why we have professional riders.....and fast/good amateurs. If everybody thought it was crazy or stupid to have jumps like that.....I'm pretty sure we wouldn't have jumps like that. Believe it or not....there's people out there that crave this sort of thing and if you're not one of them, you'll never know or understand why certain people do it. It's not really fair to stand on the sidelines and tell others what's good or bad for them.

His left foot was ripped off by the ruts in the g out. It happened to me a couple laps before Broc but I'm thanking dear god that I was able to gain control and land on my bike and kept from swapping when I landed.

There were only a cpl lines that had ruts like that. I made sure to avoid them the rest of the day. I immediately knew what had happened to Broc when I came up on the Red Cross flags waving over the jump.

I know I cheated a bad injury and I wish Broc the best recovery.

Exactly! You can see his leg come off and away from the bike as soon as he hits the face of the jump. The grip probably came off in the crash

On August 2nd, Breezewood Proving Grounds (A track that sponsors Broc) is holding a Yamaha demo ride day as well as a "Recovery Ride" to support Broc. Just figured I'd throw that out there!

Not talking about eliminating all the dangers. Just using some common sense to reduce them. Dangerous doesn't need to be ridiculous.

I'm sure the grip came off The instant he realized his foot was being drug to the ground. At that instant he probably was death gripping to try and save anything. Then the grip goes bye bye.

Riders won't bitch until someone gets killes and even then they'll be told to sit down and shit up or make room for the next batch of kids with a dream.

Name one person who wants to eliminate all the dangers. You can't because the fact that MX is dangerous is part of the attraction but we don't have to unnecessarily increase the danger factor with quads on outdoor courses.

Please don't offer your leaving it on the stand false argument to support the notion we can't do anything to make MX safer.

Where did I say that I think we should leave the bikes on the stand?

And wasn't that jump 2 table tops. After watching the race, it looked incredibly safe. I definitely wouldn't call it a "quad". You could land anywhere on that landing jump and be ok... stop overreacting!

He was already at the speed needed to jump the whole thing. That whole "a body in motion will continue in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force" kinda thing. When you're out of control the only thing to stop that force is the ground, not your brakes or desire to slow down.

They do this in so many forms of other sports. An athlete should be able to determine his own limits but that doesn't stop a promoter or organizer from minimizing risk by taking actions to prevent injury that does not affect the overall product. That jump added nothing to the racing action, it was just eye candy.

Schmelly is doing remarkably well, considering. He did an interview with RacerX yesterday for an update and a Privateer Profile (already set prior to his crash). We at the BLUE Buffalo/Slater Skins/Yamaha Team can't say enough about his character, efforts, and relentlessness to return to his passion. The first time I spoke with Broc and he responded in "yes sir" about 4x, I came away thinking this guy is unlike any other motocrosser I think I've ever spoken with. Definitely a cut above the rest and we are honored to have him. Broc Schmelyun is not finished with this sport yet. We wish you well soon Broc. - King

Only problem here is the idiots who don't think it's a problem aren't the ones laid up with broken femur, tib, fib, and ankle. Not even worth arguing over. They are clueless Rock.

[u]OMG I cant believe I have to explain this. THIS kid did not crash and get hurt on a "non-jump", corner, roller, straight, or regular old jump. He got hurt on what in reality is nothing more then then Nitro Circus part of the track.
And yes, I feel it is stupid and unnecessary because I am looking at it from the racers point of view. If no one in the AMA or MX Sports groups want to try to protect them then I have no problem doing it.

I sure hope the kid comes back stronger then ever.
Do you even read other peoples responses or just jump in and spew shit. A couple guys said his grip came off .

And a couple said he got his foot ripped off in a rut at the base of the jump, including one individual in the same race who also had it happen to him. I guess we will have to hear it from the horses mouth if he even remembers what happened.

the guy who trumpets this "safety" stuff comes from the demographic of people who think it's a good idea to take guns away from the people who didn't commit the shooting, whenever there is a shooting. Once you understand that, the responses become first predictable, then boring.. at that point you can just scroll past and disregard them.

You're one of those people who thinks removing jumps from tracks makes them safer... but fails to recognize that the lack of jumps only increases speed, which increases danger.

I don't care what you're racing on. Ice. MX. SX. AX. sidecarts.

The problem is, and will continue to be, 70hp four-strokes, PLUS, the general desperate state of drawing an income by racing a motorcycle on a professional level.

A fourth gear 130' quad doesn't decrease speed. If anything, riders will push harder through a rough section of track before a large jump to help clear it instead of proceeding with more caution.

Edit: I agree with your last statement.

I just came into this, and have to say it made me physically sick to see Broc slap the dirt like that. Really happy that the injuries were not life threatening or even career ending. He's blessed, and he knows it. Hope he makes a quick and complete recovery.

You are one of the people that makes a lot of assumptions. I am not one of the people who wants jumps removed. I am one of the people that wants traditional MX circuits which includes jumps.

I get enough of triples and quads during SX.

Your logic of removing jumps increases speed is flawed. Who says tracks have to have long smooth straights if there , are less jumps? What about switch backs, off camber turns, etc?

Broc texted me yesterday in response to my question of WTH happened? It was a new set of OEM bars (I'm assuming it came with the grip mounted) and Broc said no one though to safety wire it.

DAMN!

I don't know how you are talking about but this safety guy was an NRA member for over 20 and have had a collection of fire arms over the years. i am big on civil liberties not only gun ownership. I don't want to be stopped at any type of check point when I am driving as that is BS to stop American citizens who are supposed to be able to travel freely.

If I am driving erratically then pull me off but do NOT stop me for no reason.
