This video was SO interesting...I thought I'd share it here (my apologies if its been posted before). It talks a lot about WWII, but also conflicts before and after...military and civilian deaths. When its put into scale like this, the deaths are staggering!

Wow. Thanks Titan. That was interesting. I'm sort of a fan of WWII history. I say "sort of" because how can you be a fan of that kind of slaughter. It takes me to thoughts that are all over the board when it comes to war. Especially the glorification of it. Also the tendencies of humans to commit unbelievable atrocities to other humans. Dogma, xenophobia, leader worship. I cant put a finger on why humans can turn to such inhuman evil.

It causes me to think of other things like how governments can send their people into sure slaughter. It's part of the reason why I hate government.

An interesting thought is: what would the world look like now if somebody had slit Hitler's throat in 1936?

The crazy thing is how recent this shit was. My grandmother was 41 in 1941- born in 1900. My Dad remembers it all as a kid. This is like yesterday. We are really standing on the ashes of our civilization in a lot of ways.

Not an original thought on my part, but a good question to watch rabid anti-abortionist wrestle with is "would you have an abortion if you knew Hitler was your child"?

Too bad a German who saw what was coming wasn't able to do something about it.

I think historically years from now they will look back and see the last 100 years as one long war that began with the assassination of Franz Ferdinand that flares up every 25 years or so. The dust never settled from World War I.

I'm not a historian, but I think you can go back a lot farther than that. As long as man has "things", other will want those things so there has and will always be war.

Specifically though WWI marked a transition into the modern age were we saw the end of European monarchies, the Ottoman Empire, the birth of the Soviet Union and the rise of the United States. You can draw a direct correlation from events from 1914 to 1924 to conflict zones of today. Treaty of Versailles, the British Mandate for Palestine, and the Bolshevik Revolution kicked up dust that has yet to settle.

Lol this from a Brit. Your entire history is based on raping colonies for their resources. Your grandad went to war for oil too. Don't kid yourself WWII was about land, oil, and imperialism.

Nope. Certainly the Great War (WW1 to you) was about Imperialism. Basically a family feud by three (related) royal families. But the second world war was all about hate in Europe. Asia, well you might have a point there, the Japanese wanted it's own empire for oil and raw materials and America was all out to stop it.

Britain and France didn't go to war until Germany invaded Poland prior to that they watched Hitler annex Austria and take much of Czechoslovakia not to mention the establishment of anti-Semitic policies in Germany. Hitler was expanding the Reich for land and natural resources. It wasn't Nazi hate policies that drove the allies into war but it certainly was justification for fighting.

The Khan graph was on there. 20mil roughly. But when put in era specific perspective, it was by far the worst in history.

Of course Britain and France stood back until forced to fight. For both countries the first war had been devastating in both monetary terms and especially in men. France lost one in three of it's working aged men.
To this day Chamberlain is still derided for his policy of appeasement but the truth is that Britain was in no position to fight Germany before it did and to do so would have spelt defeat in as short a time span as France. Putting off conflict for a couple of years gave Britain a chance to update it's armaments and increase it's capabilities.

P.s. We've only just finished repaying the U.S. for the 'help' in the first war and are continuing to pay for the second.

I guess the British plan for invasion of Norway was just meant to be a little thing on the side.

This thread is a microcosm of the syndrome of war. It's human nature to attack. Maybe humans need an enemy to feel alive. Bunch of freakin' apes runnin' around with a club in our hand.

WW1? You have to go much farther back in time. Europe has always had big powers who have been fighting each other. The only shift we´ve seen from century to century was which countries were the big powers together with Germany, France and England. Europe has not had peace like it has since WW2 in ages. Much thanks to the EU, which is why the Peace price was given to them in the first place. Sure there have been smaller wars and conflicts, but the big nations have been fighting each other steadily for hundreds of years.

I'm with diablo on this one. There has never been a period where so many people were slaughtered in such a short period of time as WWI and WWII. Not even close. The mechanized age proved to be the most brutal in history. Close to 200,000,000 people in a 40 year period.

Something to think about is that it might have been the nuclear age that put an end to these world wide slaughters.

And yet, theres still too many damn people on this planet for my likes.

But, I guess if we all just got along fine and dandy we could be stacked on top of one another and being singing Christmas songs and drinking lattes till Christ, Budha, Mahumed and Jeff Smith came back to collect us all for the eternal scolding of our sins

Truly wasn't that long ago. My dad is from London and remembers the bombings as a kid. He also remembers all the American soldiers. One of his stories is that he saw a US soldier spit out some chewing gum. My dad picked it up and chewed it for about 2 weeks and then swapped it for one roller skate!

Yeah but I think WWI is where we saw the death of the European Monarchs and the beginning of modern warfare. The fall of Ottoman Empire, Russian Empire, German Empire, and Austro-Hungarian Empire fall at the same time was a major influence on how the 20th century was shaped.
