Since we can't talk about him... What about his helmet. That was the biggest head slam I've seen. He looked a little rattled but I really thought he'd be KO'd. Great job.

I yelled at the TV " man that 6d is incredible" son says what's a 6d? Me. "Helmet son", comes back in a minute and asks me can i write 6d on his Lego mx dudes helmet. Haha

He's probably concussed. But I agree, looks like a decent helmet.

Didnt someone just recently crack their skull while in one of those helmets? Just sayin

Most competition approved helmets are DOT and/or SNELL approved, which means in a singular event like Eli's, they all live up to the same safety standards. There's nothing special about a 6D helmet just like there's nothing special about those snake-oil neckbraces.

Wow. I didn't notice how hard he hit his head until now. That really was a gnarly one.

Pleas, tell us more about your expertise in TBI and how it relates to impacts with different helmets rated to different standards.

Thank you in advance.

Right? I wonder how much of an "educated" opinion some people have. To think the product is no different and labeling it a snake oil type gimmick is pretty ignorant.

It's no coincidence that nearly every major helmet manufacturer has taken the safety of their helmet to a higher standard, since 6D changed the game.

Personally, I have a hard-line rule to thoroughly research anything I spend more then a $100 on. I did the research and it was going to be a tough sell to get me out of my Shoei helmets, for past 10+ years. In the end, I believed in the technology difference the 6D offered and unfortunately, I had a chance to test that tech 1st hand in a very nasty crash coming down Mt. St. Helens.

The first thing Frank from REM said to me after witnessing the crash was NOT "are you OK? or what day is it?" it was in fact "That 6D helmet probably just saved your life".

That's my educated opinion.

The 6D helmet offers no more protection at high speed crashes than the other high end helmets. Their claim to fame is reduced chance of concussions with low speed impacts. I know that no 2 crashes are the same but Musquin took a hard hit on the Airoh and came back for the 2nd moto. If we was wearing a 6d that that would have been all we heard. There are only a couple of local riders wearing the 6d and one has switched and the other took a helicopter ride last week. After what I have witnessed at the track Im not sold on the helmet.

A standard means it has to be at least that good in a particular test. It doesn't mean they're all equal in performance.

Did you happen to catch Zach Bell's SX crash?

and Eli's crash yesterday was brutal on the head.

At the end of the day, you're right. No two crashes are the same and it's nearly impossible to conclude that an Arioh vs. Shoei vs. 6D would have any difference circumstances after a crash....and that's why there are controlled environments and testing. The 6D transferred substantially less energy to the brain on nearly every single test. So there is scientific data to support the claim.

I don't work for the company...this is all stuff that i've read from magazine reviews and gathered from talking to Bob Weber at 6D, etc.

I think the 6d will and has prompted the manufacturers to try new things but the low impact hits are where I have seen head injuries at local MX tracks from the 6d riders.

I have seen multiple 6d helmets that the inner liner was cracked from very light crashes (No visible scratches on the outer shell)

I would not use one even if they paid me. Yes 6d will rebuild them for you but it is a helmet that you will need to check carefully after even the slightest of impacts.

huh, never heard any of that. And my own experience has been polar opposite. I have plenty of character scratches on my 6D with no cracking of the inner lining. So you've seen the actual "light" crash, then followed up with the person and saw the liner was cracked?

You know Eli Tomac was contracted to wear a 6D as part of the Geico deal. When he went to the 450 he was allowed to wear any gear he wanted, hence the move to A-Stars. Yet, he kept the 6D on his head while other helmet manufacturers were throwing money at him to wear their helmet.

I've never heard any negative claims like you're making. The only negatives i've read and heard from teams and the SoCal race/ride scene is their big and expensive. Rarely does anyone challenge how safe the helmet is.

Interesting.

that means it worked.... the inner liner is suppose to crack instead of your skull, evidently that slightest of impacts wasn't so slight after all!

Are you referring to Wil Hahn from his Geico 450 days? Because if so, he was in a Shoei. Just sayin'.

And to prove I'm not just a fangirl... I don't wear Shoei or 6D.

god i hate these threads , its the same as a neck brace ,if he was wearing one the would all ready be a thread up of how it saved his life . Yes he hit his head ,but what actual prof do you have that if he was nt wearing any other helmet things would be different ??? plus he did hit his head that hard .most of the impact went to his shoulder the bit he got injured . you are just someone who has spent 750$on a helmet and is trying to convince yourself ,it was wort all the money!!!!!! , imo an Arai ,Shoei ,Bell are every bit as good for the two crashes you shown , which dont have huge impacts ,on the helmet anyway ,

I think it's totally coincidental, I've seen a lot of local mini dads switch to 6D in the last few years and I've seen quite a few of them get KO'd. I guarantee some are better than others but there are times when they will all put you to sleep.

To be fair douglasredding you're contradicting yourself.

When beast666 initially said that the inner liner's were cracking you said "huh, never heard of that" as if to defend 6d and that the inner liners weren't (are they suppose to?) cracking. But when bvm said "that means it worked....the inner liner is suppose to crack instead of your skull" you "agree, 100%".

So you now "agree, 100%" that the inner liner is suppose to crack (that that is apparently how they were designed to work...I will admit I don't know if that is the case or not) yet you've "never heard of that". So you've "never heard" of them working the way they were supposedly designed to work yet you "agree, 100%" that that is how they are suppose to work? Color me confused....

I do believe your follow up question for beast666 is a good one though and one I would've asked as well.

DOT and SNELL are *minimum* standards.

I saw it differently to you. His head whipped the ground. I've seen it in replay multiple times and it's one of the biggest head hits I've seen.

Not saying no other quality brand shoei arai etc would be different but it did something to impress me. I've mx'd road raced for long enough..

Really though Eli is a tough bugger. 40-50 to zero instantly- much respect
