Geico sponsors the series as well, does that mean all the riders and all of the vehicles in the pits must be insured by them?

Nope, a team can and has been sponsored by other insurance companies. GoPro has a unique contract where they payed for exclusive rights as the helmet cam of Supercross and Outdoors, which also includes being the only one allowed on track. I believe this is the third or fourth year of this contract.

It's what GoPro requested in their contract and they payed a certain dollar amount for it.

Is there some sort of broadcast rules being factored also? are the riders allowed to air their own footage after the race or do those rights stick with the ama/mxsports?
GoPro owns the rights to the footage.

Interesting if you pay enough money you can keep other companies out of a race...maybe Honda could buy exclusive rights to only allow Honda motocross bikes on supercross and national mx tracks. When you put it that way sounds like a f-ed up contract given to GoPro..Pinch

Understood, but by doing so it has eliminated other outside sponsors (GoPro's competitors) from being involved in the sport. I also understand that this is GoPro's SOP to keep competitors out but it does smell of anti-trust...

In the case of the helmet cam, you can't even enter the track with another helmet cam on, you'll be stopped and have it removed.

Personally, I understand if GoPro is paying a certain amount for exclusive rights at the event. I'd love to see Press Day be free game for footage (that would help us) and on the actual race day allow racers to wear whatever camera they want but allow GoPro their exclusive footage rights (only footage from a GoPro can be used for PR, editorial, and broadcast pieces). Meaning riders can run their cameras for exposure but the footage can't be used for anything else but the team's use for data reasons. (I actually think this is a great arguing point that rider's sponsored by GoPro have a advantage due to their cameras and being able to use them for Data, checking lines, etc.)

That's a sport that can afford to do that...MX needs outside sponsors...why enter a deal with one that keeps others out and actually hurts the sport?

Well I am glad MX Sports is getting paid and making more money because most of the riders are definitely not. (I know Reed does just fine)

However, handicapping the riders ability to gain additional outside sponsorship dollars is ridiculous. We have a lot of privateers who can't even finish a series because they run out of money before the series is over.

Sounds like a great idea !!??

Nah, not by a long shot.

I did however post last week in one saying it was a good day of racing for him though.

He did say they're not worried about content, it was visibility at the races... If they're just gonna use it for their own purposes it is pretty silly. But on the other hand I don't know why Astephen would have shopped that deal given this isn't a new deal.

I believe the GoPro contract with Outdoors is up this year, so maybe there could be some wiggle room on the terms. I'm not sure about Supercross though.

Not smart enough?

GoPro negotiated a contract with certain terms for a period of time and paid for that right.

Looks like Reed or 360 should have waited until the GoPro contract was up, but who knows maybe they are going to lawyer up.

I can't imagine them paying him 500K to sit at home with their camera.

I actually thought that was the case, that they just couldn't run them in the event or show footage...

Its actually pretty fucking dopey but not inconsistent when you look at the vendoring rules in SX etc.

And by doing so have blocked out others to sponsor teams or riders...bad deal for a sport in need of outside sponsors...next time people complain that riders aren't paid enough maybe they can refer to this incredibly poor deal with GoPro...

I think Chad has a very valid argument to be honest! Who are they to tell a rider what he can / can't wear on a race ta HE paid to enter!

Not only does Go-Pro not let anyone else use the camera of their choice , but they footage of what they get , they don't share shit with anyone! Fuck them and their stupid little 3sec helmet cam videos! Who is to say that companies like Reflex or 360 wouldn't give us full moto videos?

So sick and tired of these companies coming in and monopolizing our sport! It does nothing but hinder this sport and other companies who want to pay good god damn money to be part of it! Fuck you Go-Pro!

How about Fly 360 ponies up more than GoPro and gets the exclusive rights???

GoPro paid for it, they stipulated it in their contract.

How exactly is that unfair???

Wish we could see it at motocross I think it would give a new and unique perspective of the race. As for the camera I'm guessing they are hoping that they won't let him wear it because if Reed doesn't show up that will get more talk then the amount he got today.
