I cased a huge table to single and broke my back really bad awhile ago. I fractured my L 3 horizontal only a few mm from all the way and broke off a huge chunk of bone that lodged into a nerve. I also burst two discs and bulged two. I was laying on the track paralyzed, no feeling in my legs on a blind landing. Pee was coming out as I bear crawled to the side. I felt the feeling come back and was able to get helped up. I told a guy I could not even try and start my bike so he did and I got on and actually rode a wheelie on way to the trailer. I pulled in and couldn't get off and needed help. My buddy drove home. I went to doctor and we did tests and he gave me an injection. He knew I did not like pain meds but he wrote me two scripts and he gave me two boxes of 5 Fentanyl patches and put two on my arm. We got the scripts filled of pain pills and I ate a few. That night I was hurting so bad it was incredible. The doctor suggests I remove the fentanyl patches from arm and put two near my heart. In the morning I'm on the floor in and out of consciousness and my mom comes by and calls ambulance. At the hospital I get wheeled into the hall way and left there. I'm in fetal position and throwing up on a cart in hallway. I notice the nurse holding the two fentinol boxes that are held together by the script for ten, five in each box but I had used four. She comes over and says, "we all know your not hurt, you just want pain meds. You got these yesterday and nine are gone" I couldn't even speak and it was like I was in a nightmare. She was accusing me of being a addict and I don't even drink. Well my mom points out that there is five in one box and one in the other and why and then she gives the lady my two FULL pain pill bottles and says, "what kind of junkie brings all his pain meds in and hasn't even taken hardly any?" Right then the nurse said OMG we are so sorry. They instantly wheel me in a private room and hook me up to the delaudid drip and the pain subsides. The surgeon said I should have never been able to take one step. Surgery was a complete success.

Thank you for asking. I am really good ever since. I have even cartwheeled over the 100 footer since and was fine so it was a complete success to say the least and I got back to riding a few times a week about a year after. It even fixed the pinched nerve I had since childhood. I was so scared of surgery but it was a must and worked. I am 30 minutes south of Florida track and trails. Where are you located?

First of all, don't do a goddamn wheelie on the way back to your trailer, especially after having to bear crawl your way off the track.

Second, your "buddy back surgeon" who "did some tests" and gave you an injection is a world-class moron and should have his medical license revoked, assuming he even has one.

Lastly, you proceeded to "eat a few" of your fentanyl patches after putting two on your arm? Do you have any idea how dangerous fentanyl is? Probably not, judging by how stupid everything in this post sounds.

Dude. I'm a nurse. This happens all the time. She shouldn't of accused you. But holy shit didn't the doctor tell you how to use that med? Didnt the pharmacist consult you about that med???

You are lucky you didn't stop breathing.

When you said you ate a few. What does that mean. Did you actually ingest them? Drug seekers do this. They suck on them to get messed up. If you ate them you're an asshole. The box tells you for EPIDERMIC USE ONLY. DO NOT INGEST.

I can't tell you the drug and alcohol dependent patients I take care of that withdraw to the point where they are intubated for three weeks and cannot be weaned. Trached and then they just die a few months later from sepsis.

Fentanyl patches aren't anything to mess with. Fentanyl inhibits your drive to breathe and can easily be toxic to someone who is straight edged. You're lucky. And if you were my patient immediately I would suspect you're a drug addict and talk about it with the physicians treating you. I wouldn't of accused you but in your medical record it would of been noted.

I had it happen one night with kidney stones. Went out drinking one night and got home around 10. Woke up at 3am thinking i had been stabbed in my sleep. Drove myself to the er, they left me in a hallway with a saline drip. They called my mom to come pick me up after i had sobered up. Told her i needed to go to rehab and not to come to the er looking for scripts. She went batcrap crazy on them. They caved and did scans, oh my, he does have kidney stones...

720 you can thank all the assholes on drugs for ruining it for everyone. Come to work with a physician or an ER nurse for one Thursday through Sunday night shift and you'll understand and might not be so critical on hospitals accusing people of wanting pain medication.

It's sad that all the news cable channels / magazines have to sell advertising so they wright all the boogie man stories about pain meds with out wrighting/ reporting the other side the stuff that's legit , doctors are so spooked now the first thing out off there mouth in ER is no pain meds before they even look at you . Along with many other things in this country it's crazy how the media shapes our society. Glad you are doing well and if you ever run across that nurse again be polite and explain to her that someone in her position should be the last person that you would expect something like that would come out off her mouth . Kill her with guilt and maybe the next time she will have a little compassion for some one that is truly in pain .

I would've liked to watch the nurse's reaction when your mother stepped in, good to hear you're on the other side of all this and doing what you like to do.

You're blaming the media for pain medicine being one of the most abused prescription drugs in America?

I can attest to this^. My wife has had more than her fair share of medical problems the last couple of years. It has seen us in the ER way too many times, late at night. You can sit there and pick out the people that are there because, they are coming down. They are sitting there like they are in so much pain, but right after getting "a pill" they walk out smiling.

You can.

Hook em up to a monitor. Look at their visual cues. Your wife heart rate is probably sky high because she's truly in pain. . And her blood pressure would be well above her usual.

People that drug seek have vital signs that don't differ much from their usual trending vital signs. Or what's cinsidered to be normal.

Those monitors tell me whether you're really in pain or you're not. It's not all subjective. There are a lot of objective evidence to consider....

No just the rush to judgement by many doctors and nurses , as some one that's laid on that stretcher many off times ,when your in legit pain and shit like that comes out off there mouth with out even finding out what's going on I blame on the media . There is a prescription problem in America I will not argue that . But everyone coming into the er is a junkie is happening all to often and I blame the media for that .

That sucks because I was a legitimate patient in need of immediate care and at no time did I deserve any of that non sense. Fuck I paid 100, 000 a year for a nurse to stay with my inlaw and I get treated like shit by a nurse. Good times.

I don't have a story of the ER accusing me of being a junky, However I do have a story of being hard headed and thinking "Just walk it off" and that mentality almost killed me lol.

Back in 08 I was doing union refractory work and we had to do a month stint in Mississippi relining a chlorinator. Anyways I got this pain in my side/stomach area and thought I got ahold of some bad food. Finished the shift went back to the hotel and started feeling like dogshit. Next morning was bad and called in to work. I ended up going to the ER around 7pm and they said I had ACID REFLUX lol sent me packing at about 10pm back to the hotel room.

I called my wife and gave her the news and ranted about how these fucker are wrong lol. So my wife starts playing DR and comes up with the idea that my appendix has ruptured. So I go back at around 4am and tell the ER lady that I think my shit busted. I must of looked pretty damn bad because her eyes got huge and they rushed me to the back.

Long story short. My appendix had indeed busted spilling bacteria into my abdomen for around 24-36 hrs. I had an emergency appendectomy, spent a 1.5 weeks in the hospital and because the infection was so bad I had to go home with a 7'' incision open so it could heal from the inside out. I looked like a gutted pig. The whole time the DR said you fool you came real close to killing yourself.

Worst thing I have ever been thru. I was 6'2'' and about 225 dropped down to 192 and my stomach was huge like those african kids that are starving and on top of all that I couldn't shit to save my life. Pain pills fuck you up when it comes to pooping.

I stated earlier the nurse shouldn't of accused you like that. Some nurses are miserable and should just find something else to do. As im sure there are people like this in every profession. Sorry you had a shitty nurse. There are actually awesome nurses out there, but nobody goes to the media with awesome experiences. They only go to bitch.

Thanks. Lol issue free for awhile now and I don't even drink by the way if you are suggesting addiction. My addiction is moto and $$$$$. And I'm really good at both. Oh yea there is that celiac disease thing. Lol my case is lucky compared to a lot of people with the same disease. Thank you for the thoughts though.

Lol. I was working with a broken foot last year and all my coworkers gave me the "dirtbikes are dangerous blah blah". Yea go pound salt. They all think we people on motorcycles don't wear helmets. Drink copious amount of alcohol and just try to jump the highest and farthest of any man known in history. Thanks evil knevil. Smile

720 you can thank all the assholes on drugs for ruining it for everyone. Come to work with a physician or an ER nurse for one Thursday through Sunday night shift and you'll understand and might not be so critical on hospitals accusing people of wanting pain medication.
I have 3 doctors, a surgeon in my family and my wife at the time was a scrub tech at the same hospital i went to. I wasnt criticizing, and i know all to well the mindset of those involved. Along with my mom being a nurse for 30+ years..

I wanted to point out that I am not mad at that nurse. Every nurse I ever had was like family to me because they are there to make you feel better and she was just mistaken and there is a huge problem with abusing meds in my town. I am just so glad my mom brought those meds because I couldn't even talk and defend myself. They took amazing care of me after that. I was pain free directly after surgery. It was amazing and I didn't think it was possible at the time. Nurses and doctors are real life hero's to me and I want to thank you for what you do.
